So I bought this absurd glass and metal pyramid PC case. Now what?
Let's build something with it! This project started off as a modern computer centered around legacy support, with PCI slots, serial, parallel, and PS/2 ports alongside an LGA 1200 CPU and DDR4 RAM. But then it kind of... mutated. With Linux.

[I edited this post like 21 times. I just forgot stuff. Last Edit Added SYSTEM.CB] Not knowing everything you tried installing Windows 98SE, I offer the following. To be clear, you can install Windows 98SE from the hard drive, but you probably know that already. During my install, I had to change the SYSTEM.INI file and resume installation due to having too much ram. Resuming the install only affected the layout of the Start Menu. Being familiar with the Start Menu, it was easy to correct after the install. I had to put in the option to skip the scandisk as well, but I do not remember why. Assumptions (You have a good bootsector, and you can boot from the hard disk into Windows 98 DOS mode) Suggestion: Maybe limit the partition to 32GB for a proof of concept install. Here are my recommendations for each file. Ignore the horizontal lines. I just used them to separate the files for this post. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONFIG.SYS (aspi4dos.sys might be optional if you still have memory problems) dos=high,umb device=himem.sys /testmem:off devicehigh=aspi4dos.sys devicehigh=setver.exe files=60 lastdrive=z ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AUTOEXEC.BAT REM Leave File Empty ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYSTEM.INI (Available upon reboot during install. This should give you 1022MB OF RAM in WIN98SE.) [386Enh] MaxPhysPage=40000 [vcache] MaxFileCache=261120 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYSTEM.CB (Safe Mode Version of SYSTEM.INI. This should give you 1022MB OF RAM in WIN98SE.) [386Enh] MaxPhysPage=40000 [vcache] MaxFileCache=261120 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MSDOS.SYS (Marked Hidden & Read Only In Root Directory You have to use ATTRIB -R -S -H MSDOS.SYS. Once changes are done, you can probably do this ATTRIB +S MSDOS.SYS , but I do not think its required. Here is the Suggested Contents starting from the top line and being a full replacement) ;FORMAT [Paths] WinDir=C:\WINDOWS WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS HostWinBootDrv=C [Options] BootMenu=1 BootMenuDefault=1 BootMenuDelay=15 Logo=0 BootMulti=0 BootWin=1 BootGUI=1 BootKeys=1 AutoScan=1 WinVer=4.10.2222 ; ;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs. ;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes). ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxa ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxb ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxc ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxd ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxe ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxf ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxg ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxh ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxi ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxj ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxk ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxl ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxm ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxn ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxo ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxp ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxq ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxr ;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxs ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That is all that I have. Hopefully, the new hardware supports Upper Memory Block. If you do manage to install WIN98SE, I bet the next problem will involve Finding A Free Memory Region Using MSD.EXE For EMM386 + SB Live MIDI + Soundfonts for DOS Games like Doom & Duke3D. BTW: Probably the hardest conventional memory dos game to run is Falcon 3.0. You can get some bonus points from me, if you manage it on new hardware.

I did something similar with an intel Core 2 Quad. I also have Nvidia Quadro 400 GPU. If you want to go for that old Windows 9X look up the Chicago95 XFCE (desktop environment of Xubuntu) theme. Really gives the complete look and feel. Even themes the bash terminal to look like the typical MSDOS-Prompt. I also chose to do a dual HDD setup with the first running Xubuntu and the second running OpenIndiana (OpenSolaris continuation).

I am so happy this video showed me a "business motherboard" the one i chose uses 10th gen intel but as shown here has a lot of legacy support. Specifically the 2 serial ports and parallel port proved useful this year being a computer engineer student having to use RS-232 serial for projects at home because of current situations. The singular PCI slot in my case also allowed for me to play with old hardware along with new hardware. The motherboard is a freak and i love it. (Un?)fortunately i was barely able to build it due to the whole component shortage, ive kept the ram i used in my cart (so i can expand with the exact same ram in the future) in amazon and have just been watching price go up just as an example

@LGR
@LGR 4 года назад
My goal was to get a PCI card working under Windows 9x or XP, cards like the 8800 Ultra are PCI-e. But seeing as that didn't work I'll likely be sticking a PCI-e card in there soon!
@CommodoreFan64
@CommodoreFan64 4 года назад
@@LGR Just some words of advice if you are going with a newer PCI-e GPU, and you are going to keep using Linux, go with an AMD card, as they just plain work better, as the open source AMD drivers are baked right into the latest Linux kernel updates, you just apply the update, reboot, and you are golden. Nvidia you will end up having a much harder time getting them to run, unless you go with a distro such as POP_OS! which has an Nvidia build, and while it works, it's a shot in the dark at what Nvidia cards fully work. Nvidia has been fairly hostile to those of us in the Linux community for a long time, and provided little to no help, or source code for their drivers so people have had to code them from scratch. AMD, and even Intel on the other hand have teams that contribute lots of code back to the Linux kernel, and even help fund Linux projects. Just to be clear this not fanboyism speaking, this is just my personal experience of having used Linux for nearly 2 1/2 decades at this point.
@amirpourghoureiyan1637
@amirpourghoureiyan1637 4 года назад
@@CommodoreFan64 Nvidia's drivers for older cards on Linux are very hit and miss, most from 2010 and prior have been abandoned and can lock up newer distros. Nouveau is great in those situations however, as they've been the best option for getting those older ones working. AMD cards are the best for no hassle for the most part, but a lot of older cards have been excluded from their open driver, I've tried Terascale cards and couldn't get them working. The ones with the best chance of working are from the last few years, but that won't really fit the retro brief he was aiming for, I suggested the Nvidia and Creative cards as he had on hand for the XP build and thought they would still be retro enough for it to stand out like he wanted.

As a Linux convert your statement is party true, as I've ran into many issues with older Nvidia motherboard chipsets not booting past the bios screens using Linux, same for their GPU's(Nvidia is just awful on Linux period IMHO, which is why I use AMD GPU's/APU). Same with ASUS Xonar Sound Cards not being fully supported with their onboard headphone amps, along with other enhancements, or just not working at all period, and Linus Torvalds the creator of Linux recently dropped floppy disk support I believe in the newest 5.X Linux kernels.
