Dude I gotta say, Your videos are among the best as far as articulating every step of the process. And I love your results on the most part. The only part I have trouble with( Its not just you but most builders seem to do it) is conforming to the styles of Fender, Gibson or PRS. I'm in my 50s but only about 5 in as far building. But I don't see myself ever building an unoriginal piece. With the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail you apply to your work, a couple of original designs could really build you a brand of your own. But then I'm coming an artist background.
How thick is the wood for the body, and where are you able to find it (if you don't mind me asking)? I am looking at getting into making guitars on the side, and can't seem to find thicker sheets of wood without having to laminate.
Would you also recommend this method for a Jazz Bass Body? My Jazz Bass is really heavy and I'm thinking to build my own lightweight bass. But there's not that much resources for a kind of hollow body bass on RU-vid.
Hey, BigD. You've probably been asked this many times before so I apologise if you have to repeat yourself. I'd like to know what your thoughts on tonewood are. Aside from weight, cost/availability and aesthetic, what reasons are there for choosing one type of wood over another? Thanks, Miles :)
Wonderful! Im going to be starting a build very similar soon! I have three questions lol 1. Would it be much more difficult to route for gretsch style humbuckers rather than the class tele setup? 2. Would it cause any problems to your knowledge if the semi-hollow chambers were routed out from the back and the cover piece wash actually on the back of the guitar??? 3. Did you make all the templates yourself or did you purchase them? Thanks man! Love your work and love your videos! So helpful!!!
I'm intrigued that you removed the bottom bit of the center and wondered if it affected the weight of the guitar significantly I was wondering if this caused any problems with balancing when the guitar is worn with a strap.
Thanks so much for replying really useful information as I want the lightest and most resonant body possible without causing balance problems, any advice on trying to get as loud and bass heavy sounding semi acoustic guitar as possible?
Hi, just wondering if you have a particular stockist that you purchase your wood through, I'm in Australia and have to buy direct from the USA if I want curly maple etc. I've heard you mention Gilmer Wood Company wondering if you have any more contacts. Love the videos by the way, great work... I have some highly figured Queensland Maple (very similar to Mahogany only prettier) in one piece blank size approx. 45mm thick if you want to swap for some drop tops just PM me Cheers Carl Euroa Guitars
Seems like it's about building a hollow body tele. Interesting in a way, but putting a top on it doesn't really add much to the description. It's just you building a hollow body tele.
03:07 Resonating wood does nothing for an electric guitar. Vibrations in wood or air in no way have influance on a magnetic field. In fact, you don't want energy from the strings transferring to the guitarbody as this reduces the sustain. As long as the body and neck are sturdy this effect is minimal. In other words, tonewood is nothing but marketing and snakeoil. It often does look pretty though, the name should be changed to showwood.
