I’d love to see an Arcane Trickster Rogue with this background, who’s stolen a booklet from the giants. They think it’s an important tome of knowledge, but it’s really just a copy of Runes For Dummies that the giants use to teach their kids. Or maybe a Wild Magic Sorceror with a set of dice with runes carved on them, and only the spells they know are clearly legible.
Why is there no 4th level Rune feat? At 18th level I only get to use 3 a day, that's not many. They're cast at 1st level when you use the rune, so why so few? Why do I get to choose three runes at character creation on DDB when I can only use 1 a day until I get to 9th level? I love the idea of adding this to a Rune Knight, but it is a bit underwhelming.
The wording of the feat is very much focused on YOU. YOU inscribe a rune on an item YOU have on you and YOU learn the spell, so it would seem that no, you cannot give runes to other people. That said, it doesn’t specify that you CAN’T, but passing runes to other players doesn’t seem like the intent. Always worth a check-in with the DM.
Lvl 20 is oneshot area. Noone plays to that level, at least not much DMs want to do the research to get good longterm campains that can do higher levels like 16 or even higher.
A 17th level Rune Knight who picked up the Rune Carver background might (and I mean MIGHT) be able to gain 9 1st level spells (including comprehend language). Rune Shaper says "While you are wearing or carrying any rune-marked object, you can cast the spells associated with those runes using any spell slots you have. You can also invoke a rune inscribed on an object you are wearing or carrying and cast its associated spell without expending a spell slot or using material components." This feat doesn't say that the rune marked item can't come from the Rune Knight, so all 5 runes you get from the Rune Knight (could) also get you spells from the feat.
@@wizard380 Yes but it is only once and has no provision to allow it to be used with spellslots. It is therefore greatly limited unlike the rune magic. So RAW you only get it once a day regardless of level. Plus you can get rune carver from background whereas magic initiate needs to be got in place of an ASI or from your race
I've lost track of how many years I have been asking for a Manual of the Planes that wasn't 20+ years. I guess it's real that WOTC stopped caring for their customers.
