Building a school computer lab

Watch me as I struggle to record anything decent but also build a school computer lab in the process. Projects like this have sort of taken over my life with my career, so I decided to finally bring at least some of that life to my RU-vid channel.
I hope you enjoy!

Its interesting seeing how others schools do this. Where I work, we have more or less decommissioned most dedicated computer labs. We're pretty much Chromebooks in every classroom across our 15 schools. We still have a few labs for classes that need Windows-only programs, but those are quite few.

I wish oh how I wish that my school would upgrade the damn computers in the art and media department at my school. 4gb of ram and a 4rh gen i3 just won't cut it for premier pro the amount of times i have had to just do projects at home because that little dual-core just can pull its own weight or because I'm maxing out that little 4gb DDR3 stick is insane of i was in charge of IT at my school i would supply the art dept with PROPER workstations I'm talking ATLEAST an i7-7700k and 16gb of ram and a Quadro m4000 or Radeon pro wx 310. Yeah nice vid

Well as that IT guy I will tell you that it simply boils down to money. The school which I filmed this is next to poverty conditions. They hardly have enough money to operate let alone upgrade their equipment up to industry standard. Not that I like it either, communities simply choose not to spend money on education. Therefor you are running Adobe Pro on a Core2 Duo lol.

@@TechMaxWare Yeah I know im not blaming you IT techs I probably should have made that more clear. Frankly, my school has received heaps of grants and funds from my local council yet decided to spend it on repainting the walls an ugly shade of beige instead of actually supplying students with competent hardware. Personally, I can run the adobe suite at home on my gaming machine but I know others who just dont have a machine capable of doing that so yeah im not at you IT tech you work with what you have. Im mad at school administration specifically mine for pouring money into unnecessary crap.

@@shadowxxe Your school district is probably passing tax levy's in your community based on what it's spending it's money on. That's how they convince their tax payers to spend money in the education sector. Welcome to politics lol.

@@TechMaxWare I'm good with building computers myself, and doing general maintenance, as well as plugging network equipment in, although I wouldn't say I know much about networking aside from hooking stuff up. I probably wouldn't be IT material, I bet, but something like that would be almost a dream job, I think, if what self taught computer experience I have, would be hiring material. I would love to do some kind of job with computers as it's my passion, but not many places hire people who have my specific skillset these days. I'm thinking about building a small PC Workshop in my barn, specifically for storing computer parts, and housing my computer, in a place where it's not so dusty, so I can do small computer repairs and things. (I don't do soldering much though, as I suck at it) I was wondering if there's anything special you need to know about wiring in electricity for a space that has the possibility of having upwards of 3 or 4 high powered systems running at a time, though. I know it's probably not in your expertise, but the thought of a single 20 amp breaker having possibly upwards of 3 or 4 computers drawing 600watts or perhaps 1000 watts, plus some extra monitors, when needed, and whatever else I might use, just seems like something I should avoid. Do you have any ideas for taking a room that's starting from open stud framing, that is around 8ftx17ft and making it more IT friendly, and power circuit conscious, or in any other way better for my flow and usage, than the standard building layouts??? I'm thinking specifically about wall plug or plastic wall plug strips, and network jacks, as well as their positions to make my job easier, whenever I may need to move stuff around,or hide stuff, like wires.

You’d think that when they order computers that they would use internal wifi or daisy chaining the network switches. Also I can’t imagine the amount of internet traffic when all the computers get kicked on at once.

They are older units so I would say used. I believe some of them were even donated from the local collage.
