Building a Shed on a Budget part 7!! (DIY budget plywood storage shed)

In this video, Nikki and I finally finish the series building a quality plywood storage shed on a budget! Building this simple budget shed has taught me a lot about how to build a quality structure on a limited budget. In this video, we finish the shed by installing a budget metal roof that I picked up from Southern Surplus a great discount store in my town. The board and batten siding that Nikki and I installed came from Crestview Carpentry the company that I work for and also turned out great. We picked up some nice paint from home depot and put a light grey paint on the board and batton that was both easy and had a great finish.

Instead of going through all the trouble of masking off your windows, I scrape it off with a razor. Slop it on, let dry, score it along the edges with the tip of a utility knife blade then have at it. Believe me it's easy, fast, works great and actually gives you a cleaner line. BTW, I admire not just your work, but your ingenuity, energy and work ethic.

We are definitely on a budget and have tons of scraps around that we wanted to use. We are working without a plan and a little bit at a time as we have the time to spend. Your video (and the helpful comments it has inspired) give me confidence that I can work through whatever hiccups we encounter. Whether to use roof underlayment is not about whether there are holes in the roofing sheet metal. It is about water condensation from air humidity on the sheet metal underside. In a few years, you will definitely have the beginning of rot and mold on that roof. Not to mention that those screw holes are another path for water to your roof. Why didn't you use that slip and slide material for the underlayment?

Nice work on the shed. Love it!!!One suggestion though to make it nicer on the eye.......paint those lines all around on the shed black to match the door. It will really look top notch and professional. Otherwise it just looks boring in the same color all around the shed.
@mattlay3140
@mattlay3140 3 года назад
Should’ve painted it in a different color then trimmed it out in white. On your water problem did you put a flashing at the bottom of the door? I know you have Tyvek but it always helps I have a little extra. Plus around the windows. Also I’m taking a guess will it take you nine months to a year to do it?
@davidgibson9866
@davidgibson9866 5 лет назад
I love your shed... What I would've done differently, for what it's worth: 1. I would've made the roof pitch match the house or less. 2. I would've built the rafters differently to incorporate a 12" overhang completely around the shed. 3. I would've painted the shed to match your house. 4. Every shed looks better with a weathervane and flowerbox. 👍🏻

@keywestpuma4095
@keywestpuma4095 4 года назад
You did a really great job, also the tyvek was great, The reason that you should have used an underlayment for the metal roof is because changing temperatures can cause the metal roof to change temperature and sweat and just like some mornings you may find dew on your grass there will be moisture beads under your metal roof, which will eventually cause mold and mildew and I am not sure if you have ever seen what moisture or water it will do to pressed board but it warps splits and eventually turns back into a sawdust mess. Enough roll roofing to do your entire shed roof would only add about $50 to your build and it would last for 10 years or more. Other then that, great job!

Okay Rookie, the slats and felt are not to prevent leaks! The slats are to allow air movement, because you WILL have moisture under the metal because of condensation! Air movement dries the moisture so you don't get mold growth!! The felt also prevents said condensation from soaking into the OSB(NOT PLYWOOD) and ruining it!

Do yourself a favor - google ‘collar ties’ - and install at least 2 or 3 of them inside the shed under the roof. That roof may eventually sag, and the center of the walls push out, if you dont have something like that inside. (Even a small triangular piece of plywood up high). What you did was make the ridge beam on the roof a load bearing beam - and it shouldn’t be (yeah i know its just a shed, but if it starts to sag youll then have to fight to fix it later). The ridge beam should just be a nailer, not hold weight. The roof is what keeps the structure together. Right now you have the weight of the roof PUSHING down, and OUT - against the 2 long walls - pushing them apart from each other. A collar tie (just like a ceiling joist, but shorter and placed close to the ceiling) will eliminate the roof from PUSHING (spreading) the long walls apart.. Right now, you have what is essentially a giant hinge placed on top of your 2 longer walls. The collar tie will eliminate the hinge (roof) from being able to spread any more. It might take years for it to sag, but eventually its gonna. Even just 1 in the middle might save that roof from sagging down. Need a visual ? Take a door hinge and lay it flat on a table. Pull the center of the hinge up, ( youre making a triangle with the table top being the bottom). Now let go.. see how the hinge spread out? thats exactly what that roof is trying to do.. the only thing stopping it is your walls, cause you have no ceiling joists or collar ties. Eventually those two long walls will start to bow out, and the center of the roof sag down..

Love your "Shed Of The Thrifty". I will be following the majority of your "parts" and steps. Next my suggestions, I haven't started mine yet so, lol its easy from here to toss forward constructive criticism too. Total admiration from you both, no disrespect. :) 1. I was going to do dock support with concrete, but your method easier and still allows got "moving", "shift/arrangements" and truly a break down in perhaps temporary primary etc. 2. The roof seemed the best for easy, thrifty and time; however it would have been cool to have created a simple horizontal cap to catch water into a couple of rain barrels for prep and/or garden irrigation. 3. multi purpose "Shed of the thrifty could have used a built on potting table with dry sink (insert rain barrel hose here). 4. Perm/ concrete pour or Temp /wood Flooring. The floor was awesome, you made it seem possible easily. On side of potting shed, a modular deck (could be moved either side etc.) 5. Framing / Siding. You made that look genius too! I saw that you could have created outer long narrow doors for back yard tools for access and easy clean up ( see dry sink with rain barrel hose). 6. YO powah! I did something akin to creating power without having to request my last meal and prove wear all rubber theory. By either, creating a 220 switch in the electrical box or simply dedicating that extra out for plug and pulling the cord along fence neatly hung or through pvc to dedicated final area in or around shed. 7. Adding some eye hooks to allow installation of some triangular sails from She'd to corner of home. Again. It's just what came in mind as an afterthought. And it will as I begin my "shed. Of the thrift " in the next couple of weeks. Thank you!

I've enjoyed this series. One piece of advice when using metal roofing - always use an underlayment or barrier material between the metal roofing and any wood. Metal tends to "sweat" on the underside and over time, that moisture will rot your wood decking.
