This home needed a Ground Level Deck, so we decided to build a basic floating deck! With all the supply chain issues currently going on, we had to get creative with our deck building plans.

I love how Matt thinks so differently than his Father. That IS the difference at this time. Jeff did put him in his "place", and that is needed for Apprentices. They need to learn from a Master, NOT do their own thing! TY Jeff for showing this and not getting angry about how Matt decided to lay the joists. "Put an ARROW to the CROWN!" Was all that was needed. PERFECT! EveryTime!

@@brento4148 Try telling that to your boss the next time you call him a "knob". Learning is imperative! You also have to be on base with everyone, because IF 1 thing goes wrong (then something else is wrong) you are spending hours fixing it. It is far better to get a scolding than to spend another 2-4 hours fixing all the mistakes . Just my 2 cents.

@@Delekham I agree, I also believe that respect is earned through considered behaviour and teaching. I don't live in North America, it's probably a cultural thing. I have a tremendous amount of respect for my boss and would never expect to be spoken to like a child because I needed guidance on one small aspect of a job. There's ways to do things without belittling those around you.

I enjoyed hearing from the Brother's what they're doing and future plans. YES Matt--passive income!!! My son is almost 21 and in the community college Paramedics Program. It wouldn't be my top 3 career choices for him, but he is young and can change gears anytime. But I'm super happy he is going the college route for any type of career, so many young adults are bailing on higher education because they don't see the benefit of it right out of HS - the pandemic really did a number on our youth. Jeff, your son's talking about their options and interests helped me to step back and appreciate what a great kid I have and appreciate that he has always been a get-up and go-getter (his 1st job - at 13 yo - was mowing grass along the tarmac & runway at a local small town airport ... until the State of Oregon found out his age.) I adore your channel and like the recent change in the focus of your channel. Kudos Jeff !!!

Looks great! I am building a 24x24’ floating deck and need to have it done in a week. I am placing it on a grassy area that is not level, and we are not using deck blocks because we live in the country and we don’t want critters getting underneath or bees. We’re building on the ground. Any suggestions for getting it level? Can we just shim the low areas.? I’ve never built a deck before. Do not have experience, but this looks simple enough. Also, would you recommend building it in one big 24 x 24 section or would you recommend building it in two or four smaller sections? Thanks!

Jeff, nice work ok i asked this before and didn't get an answer so hopefully you will see this. I tore down a 7 year old 12 X 24 section of deck at about 9' above ground, 7 years old and tons of wood rot. not thrilled. but I have a 19 X 7.5' swim spa coming so I'm pouring a 12 X 20 pad 6" thick on the ground, I'm going to rebuild the deck at the original height of about 9'. I need to support the swim spa off the pad so that about 20" of it sticks up above the new deck. my question is what would you recommend i use to build up a support at about 5' off the new pad so the swim spa is self supported. weight full of water is about 25,000 lbs. with people and the fact that water is moving etc. say i support for 30K lbs. any suggestions? I live in northwest Georgia so will take more precaution against wood rot this time but wonder is i should maybe build some kind of steel support. ??

I’ve heard you mention several times in videos about not using the correct screws for the subfloor. I’m in the middle of a kitchen remodel and actually used drywall screws for my subfloor but luckily haven’t put down the floor yet. I’ve tried to look for flooring screws but at Home Depot I don’t see anything specifically saying flooring screws. Only nails. Where can I find the proper screw and what are they called. Thanks In advance.

My only criticism is the double joist should be on the outside (more foot traffic) versus up against the house. Also I might turn the whole thing 180, because the joist would have the water on the ground run away from the house without trapping on the crossmember. Some are saying what about the top of the deck, water would run across 8 inches quicker than 10ft

What type/length of nails did you use for the joists? I'm pricing out lumber for a 12x12 right now and plan on building it the same way you did in this video. Simple, clean, and need a ground level floater for how my backyard is shaped and where the utilities run. Thanks!

Do you need a permit to build this kind of deck in Massachusetts? I would love to build a 12×12 just not sure of the codes or permit laws
