I've dug a few holes in my time, some i found a little difficult to get out of. But one thing i did (either i was told or i saw someone doing it) was to start digging and if it was very hard, fill it with water, then while that was soaking in, move to the next hole. then fill that one after removing a few shovel loads. It's easier to dig mud! Easier and takes a little less time. Great wall in N.Z! I look forward to searching for it on google earth! it is going to be huge! Michael

That's a great tip! I don't know whey I didn't think of that myself as I found it really easy to dig after it had been raining. Lol, we all have those holes that we dig for ourselves that we can't get out of 🤣 Cheers man, I'll give you a wave on google earth!

Yeah I reckon aye. Assuming use of 100mm posts, they take up a third of the space of a normal wall as well.

Cheers cobber, it was a lot of hard yakka, and that's how I wrecked my arm with all that digging (and why I was wearing that blue strapping). Still got a few hard yards to go but it will be worth it!! 🍺🍺🤙🏖️

Cheers Suj 👍🏻. Their website says 20+ years, similar to the treated pine we usually use around here. I reckon it should go more though because we are inland so there's no salt in the air where we live.

Hey Rob, really enjoyed the video and quite relevant for me as I am thinking of doing something similar at my house, so thank you. It didn't look like you were putting any drainage gravel behind the wall. Is that something for later, or the wall is so short that it is not needed? Thanks mate.
@TakamiWoodshop
@TakamiWoodshop 3 года назад
Hey Bob, that's good to hear - the website for that company is pretty informative about the system (in description). One benefit is that it takes up much less width than having a 100mm post with 50mm boards (150mm+) where this system takes only about 65mm. The wall perpendicular to this one is itself a retaining wall and has all the drainage already installed, so I didn't bother. However, if this was a new wall, drainage is recommended (hose, gravel, geo-textile/screen). Be interested to see what you end up doing mate! Been keeping well? Cheers.

Were all those clamps and straight edged metal used to ensure everything was plumb and at the same height?
@TakamiWoodshop
@TakamiWoodshop Год назад
Yep, that's right. but with instant concrete you can also just pour and then place the post in after. I didn't trust myself to get it all plumb and straight during that short window of setting time so I did it before pouring the concrete.

Can you explain the math part to me ? Please I’m having a hard time getting the wall I’m working on at correct height
@TakamiWoodshop
@TakamiWoodshop 2 года назад
Hi, the math in this video isn't for getting the wall to height sorry, it's me using Pythagoras theorem to ensure that the new wall is aligned at 90° to the existing wall.

No worries, just ask for retaining timber, and you'll get the correct H level. It's either 4.8m or 6m lengths in NZ. Mine is 200x50 rough sawn. From M10, Bunnings etc, they all have it.
@anilgargsfo
@anilgargsfo Год назад
What kind of joiner do you use for two c-posts?
@TakamiWoodshop
@TakamiWoodshop Год назад
You buy them pre joined, but it's just two of them welded together back to back. You can also purchase them joined back to side, for making 90° turns.
@anilgargsfo

@@TakamiWoodshop I suspect these are spot welded at many places. Sections are too thin to accept any other type of welding.

So, no backfill drainage? No bitumen paint? Hmm..the moisture in the ground will rot the sleepers in no time. Even the treated wood will rot.
