Even though they are crop sensor, you should do Fuji too. Lots of folks making amazing content with those.

I so want to pick up a XT2, but I need to rebuy my mid on the Full frame side and upgrade my main to something newer. Once I get my "Kit" built out properly, I plan to buy either a GR for fun or a XT2 to adapt the lenses to it.

Agreed. I have an X-Pro 2 and X-T3, a battery grip, flash and various lenses. The cost and weight compared to Canon, Nikon and Sony as less than half. And the gear is beautiful and inspiring. I use the same cameras to work and document my life and do street photography, they're are not just tools that are ugly and boring.

I personally bought a tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 and Have not put another lens on my body since i got it. It doesn't cover the wide end but IMO can replace 70-200 and most of the range on a 24-70, while also having a wider maximum aperture on the wider end.

Going with the tamron lenses for sony and shopping around I build my Sony System for muuuuch less money :) Sony a7IV WITH the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 - 2550€ Tamron 17-28 f/2.8 - 750€ Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 - 800€ (used, but mint condition) Godox TT685IIS Flash - 140€, but bought two, so 280€ makes a total of: 4380€, which is an unbeatable price to performance I think :)

Love this cost comparison, Mik. Would like to see a similar comparison but for third party.

Yes, I currently have 3rd party f/2.8 mid and long tele's mixed with major brand primes. If I had it to do over, I would have not bought the 85mm 1.8 new. I would have bought an older 85mm f/1.4 Used and 3rd party. I did just that when I bought my 70-200mm f/2.8, I bought it used (1/2 the price new) and 3rd party. It helped me to speed up the purchase of my 2nd body or "Backup Cam".

First step is to buy a Canon...A Sony. :P Mik thank you for saying "I don't need more than 20MP" for events. Yes, thank you. So, so many people overlook good low MP camera's and overspend on the body. Yes, you need a good solid performing body, but you need good glass to take advantage of the higher MP. I see so many beginners spend 80% of their budget on the body, then buy cheap and slow glass. Then they are disappointed with the final results off a cheap and slow lens. I bet a lot of folks don't even use their gear after a few times out if they get not so great results starting out. I know I struggled with the kit lens for a year or so. Then I finally bought a 35mm f/1.8 prime, I was blown aways by the DOF, sharpness, and the color from the prime lens. Look I get buying the newest camera, totally get it. But for someone that maybe new to event or wedding photography more than likely are not looking at slamming $2,500 down on a body alone. I would think $2,500 will be their whole budget if not less. I would be interested to see what you would do if you had a budget and you had to buy a kit that way, maybe part 2? Little confused, in step #2 "Mid-Range / Bread and Butter" you called the 70-200mm f/2.8 the "bread and butter" in the video. So, someone not paying close attention may get confused on which one you are referring to. I am guessing 24-70mm f/2.8 would be your first lens then the 70-200mm f/2.8 would be the second lens. Also, would a 14-35mm (or 16-35mm whatever), would a 24-120 f/4 be out of the question for events? Get you a better range, and constant aperture. If you can use flash, it may be a good move. But I get if you cannot use flash and it's an event indoors with little to no lighting. I wonder how everyone else started off, what would you tell a younger you starting out?

If you do low light events the lower MP count is a plus. I shoot in a lot of darker venues and my A7 III and A7 IV are way better in the higher iso range than my A7R IV. If you're just starting out I would say: Buy a A7 III or A7 IV with a 24-70 f2.8. You can get a lot done with this set-up Once you've earned enough money invest again in new lenses. My investing strategy was like this. Start with - Sony A7 III + 24-70 f2.8 Bought these step by step once I earned enough. - Sony 70-200 f2.8 - Sony 16-35 f2.8 - Sony 85 f1.4 Bought my second body once I got bigger clients and didn't have time to swap lenses. Sony A7 IV
