As a kid I would take the TV remotes, almost any remote works, and turn it upside down and imagine up a slick spaceship. I really wish I would have known about this hobby as a kid or even as a young man tbh. I plan on getting into it eventually, but for now I live vicariously through all you talented youtubers as I bang on through my 12 hour shifts.

Mars black is also some times known as black iron oxide, is made from (surprise!) iron oxide. Mars (the god of war) is associated with iron (from the age of iron weapons), and that's why it's called Mars black.

Most of those bottles are made of HDPE, or High Density PolyEthylene, which is notoriously resistant to most adhesives and paints. The tops are often made of PP, or PolyPropylene, which is virtually impossible to glue - it has a surface which is oily to the touch, which is great for chemical resistance, but not for working with in a craft capacity. I have stuck it with hot glue, but it isn't a strong bond by any means. Superglue achieves about the same sort of bond, and I believe that it mentions on the packs not to use it with PP, PE, or HDPE. Even on contact adhesive, like 'UHU', which I use a lot, it recommends against trying to glue these plastics. That bottle is an interesting shape, though, and Eric Geusz' illustration is superb. I know that, if you can make one, it will be top notch. Nice one.
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 4 года назад
Thanks. and yes the bottle is HDPE. The superglue holds pretty well, although I do use an accelerant which might be why it's working. The Humbrol primer worked very well on it too - no problems at all there.

Love your videos! I might have a tip for you to try.. been making a model land rover for the old mans birthday (he’s ex army) and the chipping techniques I’ve seen didn’t really work. Salt and hairspray are great for the middle of big panels, but not so great for details. Real Land Rovers don’t get corrosion on the middle of body panels as I’m sure you know. But the bolt heads on the bumpers get paint battered off in seconds. So..spray the model with synthetic enamel metal paint, 2 or 3 generous layers. Let it dry for a few hours. Then go over it with a thinned down top coat, enough layers to make just opaque. Let that dry. Now drag a cheap disposable nail file over the model. No pressure used. Anything sticking out will get it’s top coats knocked off. Sort of reverse dry brushing?
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 4 года назад
That was the first technique I ever learned for chipping, any years ago. It was in the instructions for a model pistol I built, maybe 35 years ago. It's a great technique - thanks for reminding me of it :-)

Firstly, - well played on the Union Jack/Flag descriptor, I’ve seen too many “patriots “ unknowingly flying the national emblem upside down - it’s really refreshing to hear someone take the time to give a brief explanation about how it works. . . I just have to say, Your model making is beyond excellent, your commentary and tips are even better, but I just love these scratch builds, , , , a shampoo bottle, plastic shot glass, bamboo skewer and a bundle of imagination- superb! . So what if the paint doesn’t always stick? I’m going to be doing some of this with/for my grandkids- Well done you! It would be fun if you maybe had a regular “Blue Peter “ corner, - just building stuff for fun from anything laying around. -In fact I reckon, if I challenged you to build something from an electric toothbrush, some drinking straws and a bus ticket, you’d come up with another winner! I was very pleased to hear that physical SFX models are becoming popular with film makers again, as people are getting fed up of CGI, as it all starts to look the same, and the fact that there are no boundaries with CGI, is leading to lazy storytelling. CGI explosions will always behave how you expect, and looked dull on screen fairly quickly - the 'Praxis' halo explosion in Star Trek VI (1991), springs to mind. Miniature explosions are far more dynamic and varied. Duncan Jones' brilliant 2009 movie 'Moon' used physical effects models, and WETA Studios' 'Thunderbirds Are Go' series uses CGI characters alongside physical effects models and environments.

In my opinion it looks like something made to explore the deep sea! Great model. I would've made it brass colours to look like a diving suit. ^^

Found some inspiration for my next Space Engineers build. BTW, I think a couple of the travel-sized bottles would make some nice engine pods.

It could be. It was only the fact the reference pic is a spaceship that makes it one, but it wouldn't be hard to imagine it as a sub.

This is great, I used to look at such house hold detergent bottles thinking that would make a great ship or weapons turret or fighter etc (what can I say, I love Sifi) but never actually did anything about it. And before you said it I thought that part looked like it was Astroneer.
@SteamGeezerUK
@SteamGeezerUK 4 года назад
Thanks. I'm actually going to do a proper Astroneer print one day. I tried it once ages ago when I first started 3D printing and failed miserably. Now I'm a bit better at it I really should try again.

I'm watching Blue Peter but nobody said: "And here's one I made earlier"! Yes, "part of me is" I agree, or "part of me was a milk bottle". I suppose it could be correct if we know that the milk bottle which is now part of the H&S was itself recycled!

Maybe because I'm familiar with the shampoo bottle but I think the blue is a little too on-the-nose - perhaps a different color would've given it less of that look
@SteamGeezerUK

Possibly, but the idea of this build was to a) match the reference picture and b) make it look pretty obvious what is was made from :-)
