Great work and well done video. I remember when I first read about a 3D printer back in the late 80s, a resin setup and astronomically expensive. It amazes me what a hobbyist can do now.
Dang cool prop. I see I need me a 3D printer. I have an unlicensed phaser 2 prop kit that I put together old-school maybe 25 years ago. It actually looks more authentic than the $200 licensed replica I bought a few years ago, but it is a fully static prop w/no sounds or lights.
Hi Oggie, hope you're doing well. Fantastic build and nice companion piece to the communicator. Will look great in the collection. Take care and have a great weekend. Alfonso
Here are some model kit ideas you might consider for your next build; submarine in Fantastic voyage, C57D saucer in Forbidden planet, K7 space station from The trouble with tribbles, DS9 space station from Deep space nine, Fireball XL5, Stingray submarine from Gerry Anderson's marionette show...just a few ideas I'd throw out there for you...I really enjoy watching you build models and the level of detail and lighting you put into them...thanks for sharing and stay safe!
Hi Jean...appreciate the suggestions and thanks for your kind words. I've already built the c57 and DS9 station and am quickly running out of room. Lol. I do have a few things in mind though
Hi....actually I was advised to hold off applying a gloss coat here. The clear coat apparently dulls this particular brand of chrome paint. I tested it and sure enough it doesnt look as shiny. Thanks for the tip though.
If only we had stuff like this in the 70's/80's... I like how SNW updates the old Kirk era designs while making them look modern. My only issue is that I think these phasers and communicators were Starfleet issue during Kirk's time, Pike's would have looked more like the ones in The Cage, but I can forgive the artistic license with these props.
What the hell are you talking about when the whole ship is updated? It’s a reboot/alternate universe no matter what they say. I don’t know why they insist that it’s in the prime universe. But is the “Prime” universe really the same one from TOS os some trickery Kurtzman did in his movie that the “prime” universe is just another alternate he made up. Definitely not TOS as Spock Pike Kirk everything looks different.
Amazing job! The way how you painted and made the final touches were wonderful! Are you planning to build a phaser with electronics? It could be great! Congrats!
Hey Oggie, first time commenter long time viewer here! Always enjoy and learn from your videos. Really impressed with the printed pieces you create, about to venture into the printer market and wondering what kind of printer you're using for your props? Always a pleasure, thanks for the vids!
Hello Craig….thanks for commenting and for being a faithful subscriber. I appreciate the kind words. I am using the Elegoo Saturn and Siraya resin. Feel free to email me for more details or if u need more advice. Thanks again, great to hear from you
Hi Oggie , Krylon is horrible paint , The Metallics never dry thoroughly , part of that reason is Krylon has taken out the drying agents because of California EPA laws . However if you buy the same stuff in Arizona its way better. Much cheeper to stick with Alclad or Mr Hobby Super Metallics. Another Great Chrome paint is House of Color Super Chrome. It is the Really durable ( Lacquer) and I think Coast Airbrush carries that.
Hey Franco....yes I quite agree. I can see how it really wouldnt be a good choice for a model like the Razor crest for example. These parts worked out ok but I will definitely will be using Alclad next.
First... I love your content. Thank you for your effort and passion. Second... I believe you did a video quite some time ago that gave your recommendations on the basics of model making (tools, compressor, paint sprayer, paints, etc.). Do those recommendations still apply? Or would you (have you) make other material choices - knowing now what you know? For example: Do you use the same air compressor? The same paint sprayer? Etc. Again - Thank you for all you do.
Hi Lee...thank you so much for your kind words. Wow...those are old videos Lol. For the most part the recommendations made still hold up with the exception of the pseudo airbrush tools that were produced by Testors. Testors is no longer manufacturing model building materials. They were my first steps into any sort of airbrushing but it really is best to use a full on airbrush if possible. Testors has also stopped producing paints, which is a shame. I have since turned to Vallejo and Tamyia brands. I do think the Mission Models are nice paints as well. As for airbrushing I've recently switched to the Iwata Eclipse airbrush which I do like alot. Am still using an Iwata SprintJet for the compressor which has been very reliable. The Badger Patriot 105 was the airbrush I had been using and still do occasionally but the Iwata has been a great one to transition into. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks again for watching.
Nice. Some clarification.... in regards to pieces.... I get that the spring was from another project, but the were the clear parts also printed or sourced from somewhere else?
Thanks Kevin. I actually did add a clear coat to the trigger but didn't help much. Someone suggested printing the trigger at 99% instead. This would give it a little more room to move. Seems like an interesting idea which I will try the next time. Appreciate the tip though, thanks for watching.
Nice. I like the updated design. What would be your favorite phaser from the Kirk era or ST? I always liked the Assault phaser.. the ones you see in ST5 & 6.
Umm... there isn't a Playmates version. At least not yet. This is from a newer Star Trek series with updated "retro" props. This prop is almost spot on, and likely about as close as you're going to get without metal fabrication and manufacturing tooling etc. Check this out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VXQ995SCuB8.html
Hi Oggie! Nice job like always… How did you print out he parts? I mean: did you print them in a specific degree’s ? How thick did were the supports and what type of supports did you use? Keep the good work going…👍
some yes, others not really. As for the supports, I follow the settings that I learned from 3D printing Pro. Here's a link to Check out his tutorials on the subject ru-vid.com/group/PLC4QzbTxrEF-fA1OC_-zE_4f6n1K-w2SS
I think it was a printing issue. Am going to try and look into all the issues before printing the next one. Luckily this was remedied quite easily with Milliput.
@@InterstellarModeler Thank you for the reply. I had such great hopes for printing dimensionally accurate resin mechanical parts, but find this to be not as easy as I imagined. So so many variables to chase. Phaser looks fantastic, BTW!
Since this is a model you assemble, youmd have to install a sound board. I’m sure there’s one small enough available but haven’t really looked myself. This was designed to be a static prop. Thanks for watching
Nice job! Unfortunatly, SNWs doesn't do anything for me. Really poor story telling IMHO. The Orville is a better Star Trek than SNWs. Orville has it right.
