Hey guys! This vid is showing how I made a steel canopy to suit my dads 2011 ranger. Time was against me so many mistakes were made and shown in the video, It was powder-coated in dulux satin white so it somewhat matched the aging paint on the ute. Hope you enjoy watching. Great effort and result considering the time constraints and lack of proper tooling. You gave it your best shot with the tools and skills available and you have to be happy with that. Sometimes getting it done is more important than having it perfect.

Awesome work mate. Credit to you and doesn’t look bad. Just wondering did you not use any rubber seals for the doors?

Hey mate awesome vid, you reckon a steel canopy with less reinforcing would weigh less than aluminium with more reinforcing?
@builddriverace
@builddriverace 5 лет назад
sam scott Thanks mate! Steel typically being 2.5 times denser than alloy. I’d say the alluminium would still be lighter . Depending on just how much more reinforcing you put in. I only used the steel roof and supports because it was supposed to be able to bear some weight on top in some cases. Hope that’s helpful.

How much would it cost to build one canopy like this?

Thanks for the vid. We're making one and were wondering about creating positive air pressure in the canopy to keep dust out (especially Northern Territory dust) but it looks like you didn't do this. How did it go for your dad? Any dust?
@builddriverace
@builddriverace 3 года назад
Gday mate. Yeah I didn’t really think about that when building it. It’s got little to no dust on the inside after the year of use, if it did have some, I was going to slip some door rubber over the angle door frame to seal it up a bit.

A small van whirlybird on top would add positive pressure to it but no longer water tight if it's submerged

and don't be 'that Guy' who backs something like this @16.56 right up to till the back tyres touch the kerb at the shopping centre footpath and has all this overhang intruding into the footpath.

This was the dumbest possible way to build a canopy but i truly admire the tenacity Lol, if i hadve dug myself in a similar hole with a job i desperately attempted i would of had a cut out and started again or thrown it into the scrap bin as it stood. working hard no matter how stupid the task is half the battle of being succesful
