That’s almost identical to my daily forge. Same size and build except I put a thick coat of itc100 over the refractory and my burner is on the side sitting at a slight angle. Gets a good swirling motion inside. Zero hot spots. These round forges with ribbon burners work fantastically

Great job making the forge 😊🥳 and I know people who make forges usually have the ribbon burner off set so the flames are going around the forge instead of coming straight down but each to there own for the purpose of the forge they are using it for 👍

I'm looking at building a new forge and I'm thinking about making one that's a welded box, about 24X15X15. For the bottom I'm planning on doing a layer of those soft bricks for the base with a layer of thin hard bricks on top to deal with wear and flux. For the sides I and top I plan on 3 layers of Kaowool with some satanite to make it nice and hard. I'm curious about what would help my forge be more efficient though, since I don't want to use too much gas since I'd rather forge longer for the same price. Also thinking about running 2 or 3 burners, not sure how many, but I want to be able to shut off half of the forge with a brick or something, and shut one of the burners for when I do small stuff, since I don't have enough space to have multiple forges. Keep it up, sick channel.
@jrocks1971
@jrocks1971 2 года назад
The hard fire bricks are a heat sink that will waste gas. You are better off using blanket liner all around, rigidizing each layer in turn with colloidal silica rigidizer, flame curing the rigidizer gently, next layer of wool, rigidize that, flame cure it, then apply Kastolite 30 over that in a ~1/4” layer, high humidity “trashbag cure” it overnight, then slowly flame cure it. Kastolite 30 is very flux resistant, and doesn’t waste as much heat as a fire brick, so that’s a pretty ideal material to use for the bottom of the Forge. if you want to get properly fancy, finish the final layer over the Kastolite with Plistix 900F, which is a high alumina infrared reflective coating that will achieve higher temperatures, quicker, saving you time and fuel. That stuff bakes on like a ceramic coating and is highly flux resistant. You can also make sacrificial trays and plates to segregate the flux from your liner.

GREAT responses to the YouToob safety nazis. “Where is the guard for that grinder?” “I dunno - I threw it away.” 😄🤣🤘🏼 I do the exact same thing because it gives you a lot more versatility with the tool, but you really do have to make sure you have really good eye protection. I mostly wear my full face grinding shield nowadays when I use it that way. Twice now, I have had slivers of razor-sharp steel bounce in behind my safety glasses and stick me in the eyeball. Those ER visits get old, quick.

Man I love your videos, and I am not one to be the safety police, but if I could give you just a little bit of positive criticism, I guess would be when you’re welding to wear some kind of gloves, a long sleeve, not because of the possibility of getting burned but because of the amount of UV flash that is being soaked into your skin, I weld every day as a heavy equipment mechanic for my day job and that would be my only critique and I know it’s my opinion in my opinion only so take that with, however, many grains of salt, but keep up the good work

Cool. Nice work. I take the valve off before I cut the valve guards off. Not terribly hard to do but either way works. My only weird peeve is I like the grinder guard when cutting just like I like eye protection & seat belts. Granted, if you break the wheel you did something wrong, but it'll happen eventually in many shops. Nice nit to have cutting wheel bits in your belly. Big bad forge.

For my forge when I built, After the refractory I placed Firebrick on the bottom & both side's, it heats up pretty quick, and the outside is always cool to the touch, I did go fairly thick. The bottom is almost 8 inches and sides are almost 6 inches (counting the brick) my firebrick is a hair over an inch thick.. I also have a removable 2" x 4" steel tube I use to heat treat knives & swords.. I get you on heavy, LOL.. I built it a few years back and it takes a couple people (strong) to move it.. Dude I like your style with regards to people griping about the grinder but us army guys tend to have similar attitudes. I will say though cutting off the handle on that tank was likely a mistake because it makes access to the valve easier but removing it harder because with the handle intact you can ratchet strap it to a tree so the tank starts to spin as you crank on the valve but the ratchet strap through the handle keeps it from spinning so you can use the crescent wrench and a pipe as a cheater bar to really crank on it to bust that valve loose

Can we take a minute to appreciate his response to people about grinding the handle off the tank and the response to wear his guard is for the grinder his answer was literally exactly how I feel I use a grinder all day at work and I never have a guard on it because I am competent enough and have used a grinder for so many years that I don't need a guard on it I've used it so much that it feels like an extension of my hand. He is a hundred percent accurate when he said if you can't cut the handle off without cutting into the tank you have no business having a grinder.
