Thanks, I am (gradually) building a turbo-powered Mazda Renesis swapped to a '98 Sidekick and have a 3N71b I hope to use. I've been looking for a 2500 rpm stall or more torque converter, but can't seem to find one here in US. My second choice was to see if the Locker converter would fit, but it looks like they are too fat from what you showed. Thanks for the info on the JATCOs.
No worries yeah there is a few local guru's here in South Australia that do lots of Jatco stuff. MV automatics, and KEAS. You could probably Google and see some stuff they've done. They could help you out with a converter and valve bodies if you're happy to pay the postage
I had a trans guru come into the shop and he said the trans should work fine and that they actually used to pull apart mazda Gearboxes to put all the good but into VL ones back in the day. Stoked! I haven't fitted the trans yet🤣
Those older jatco 3n71B and overdrive versions are still far way better than the new Jatco CVT model when you compare them in reliability. Those old jatcos aren't horrible looking to work on either way and they look like a cross between a Ford C4 and a TH350 mechanically so I do see some potential in them. The current Nissan Jatco CVT has a way more complicated design and not very durable looking either (due to a steel link flexible belt and they notorious for shattering and thats what kills them even under normal driving with no abuse) and its not a regular conventional automatic and they are probably one of the worst transmissions ever on the planet currently for any vehicle ( you will see many lawsuits on those current nissan jatco cvts). Those old Jatcos you talked about would beat that new nissan jatco CVT in reliability and strength. Sure those old jatco's you talked about aren't perfect but the newer Jatco CVT (catastrophic vile transaxle) is just inexcusable bad.
Yeah can't say I'm a fan of any cvt😅 I recently had a trans guy at the shop and he said I went the right way. In fact they used to pull perfectly good 929s apart back in the day to get all the N4AEL parts out and load them into 4n71s for the VL turbo guys. Ha said the trans should be good and the valve body should work fine. I still haven't put it in the car yet 😅😅
