Great video! I used ot work for Audio Note and have worked with a lot of Russian valves, the pins have a coating that may go dull but still conducts very well, spraying them with deoxit is fine but you shouldn't file them as you're actually reducing their life.

Twenty years ago, I built a dual 6L6 "California Dreaming" amp from scratch: punched and drilled the chassis, mounted components, sockets (ceramic), transforms, orange drop caps, pots, and terminal strips, point-to-point hand wired all... a labor of love... and it worked, too! - in short order I blew out the spare stereo speaker I connected to it! One difference; I checked unloaded filament, grid and plate voltages before inserting the tubes! 🙂Still stored away. A labor of love.

@prajnana Wow that's a lot of work to get that close and not just finish it up, it's a shame that it has been abandoned to storage for so long. Why not bring the amp to a good tech to get the last bits sorted out if you can't figure it out yourself ???

Wow. A Dr. Z Maz 18 amp inspired me to explore building my own amps. After about 10 years of trial and error, tweaking and modding, I finally had a build that sounded "as good as a Dr. Z", heh, my opinion of course. Almost 20 years ago I was at a local blues jam, and someone asked me if I would play through his new amp so he could hear what it sounds like out front. It was a Dr. Z Maz 18. When I got up to jam with the band, during one tune as I was finishing up a couple takes during my time to solo, the jam master motioned to the sax player to take it. Instead, he said, "no, I want to hear some more of that sweet guitar tone again", and bowed motioning for me to play again. Really, that is what happened, and really, that little amp blew my mind. When you get that kind of tone in the feedback loop between your ears, fingers, and the amp, it really does feel like you can play better. It is more something you feel and not just what you hear. And even with only 18w it cut threw the mix at a jam that would get "stupid loud" at times. I did a deep dive into Dr. Z amps, and concluded I just couldn't afford the $$, so I started a quest to build my own amps. I did enjoy learning and building, but the main lesson I learned was, that in the long run, if I had just bought the Dr. Z "I couldn't afford", it would have cost me less $$. Personal amp building is a deep rabbit hole, time, struggle, pain and $$ consuming process.

Hell yes! My Route 66 and ‘90s Carmen Ghia are so freaking wonderful. I had played plenty of amps before, but the first strum through my Route 66 about a year and a half ago made me feel like I was on the London scene in ‘66. Lots of players might hate this word, but there’s definitely a certain “mojo” that I haven’t felt in other amps. It’s like they care about and love my guitars. They let the pure voice of my instruments shine, but impart just a bit of their own inherent characteristics without being the “whole” sound. I know there are more models in my future.

Amazing. Great idea for a video. The “electronic” side of guitars, pedals and amps has always intimidated the hell out of me. The assembly of something like this amp, is really impressive, but then to think of these guys having the knowledge needed to actually design it, first, is mind blowing. Cool stuff, thanks for sharing.
@HearGear
@HearGear 4 месяца назад
This is not rocket science .. but, it takes quite a lot to build an amp like that, I have all the knowledge to build pedals and amps I have built amps and currently building pedals, but it´s not enough to have the knowledge, it takes perfection and extreme determination to be able to build such a great amps as Dr Z or any other amp that is built by human hand, when it all comes around its not really expensive to buy a hand built amp for 2-3k. When I build my pedals I spend about a day on each pedal because I start with an empty PCB, also the pedal is tested for about an hour before its packed up and shipped out to the customer. Thank you Robert for sharing this process from such a good and great company as Dr Z, those amps sounds absolutely fantastic.

Having worked in electronics all my life and started with valves (Tubes) I still think they are the best for a warm smooth sound that very few solid state amps can emulate. As for building them by hand, i was doing that from my early teens including making the chassis and cabinet. It is geat to see that some are still doing this, but the prices make your guitar weep!

The only thing I wish I would have seen was the smoke being pulled away with that fan that should have a tube leading outside pulling the smoke out of the building. I use a dryer vent exhaust hose with a 8" fan that goes to the bottom part of my shed and pushes it outside so none of that is in the area of my lungs. I don't build amps, but I do jewelry and I also solder guitars and basic stuff. Always protect your lungs. But as for this mans amp building skills is awesome!

That is awesome! I have a 1972 50 W Marshall and a gentleman I work with resurrected it from the dead almost 20 years ago. Anyway a few months ago I had him put new caps and output tubes in it for me and it's funny the same day you put this video up I lost output from the amp. So I opened it up saw there was a wire disconnected I sent a picture to him ( I call him Dr. Bob) where does this wire go? Unbelievably he was able to tell me where it went just from the picture, so I got my soldering iron out and went to town by the way I forgot to discharge the capacitors so I had arcs and Sparks going on it was fun but scared the crap out of me long story short it's screaming now. But my point is these gentlemen that work on these old tube amps are a Dying Breed. I keep telling Bob that when he retires which will be soon he needs to show me how to work on these old tube amps. I hope he takes me up on the offer, because I'm no spring chicken myself I'm 52 years old. Again great video buddy!

The benefit to a hand wired amplifier, as opposed to a PCB, is that it is vastly easier to repair. A hand wired solid state amp would be just as good as this one, but much more affordable. But people don't want to believe that they wasted their money on snake oil. So, they fool themselves into thinking the tubes are superior, despite the fact that nobody has ever been able to detect the difference in a blind test. It's all marketing to sell something at a premium price.
