This guitar was inspired by a guitar that was made for Albert King by Dan Erlewine in early 1970's

Another excellent video, I just wish that you did more of them. I really enjoy watching guitar building/repair videos on RU-vid and you and twoodfrd in Canada are my absolute favourites, I have no woodworking skills myself and just admire your incredible craftsmanship and integrity. The Flying V looks amazing and is certainly more than capable of reproducing that very unique Albert King tone.

Thanks Henry. I've recently subscribed to twoodfrd. He makes very good videos. I wish I could make more. But the filming process does slow everything down, and I am continually torn between the need to need to get on with a job and my desire to make more videos. However, a couple more should be coming out soon (ish!) Thanks for you encouragement.

Thanks for your kind comments. Yes, I want to build beautiful guitars, but the sound and how it plays are just as important to me, if not more so. A guitar that sounds great and plays well gets played. A guitar that only looks great, after a while just stays in its case.

Dan still makes these guitars upon request. If it's made for a righty no need to fashion it left handed. It was custom made left handed originally for Albert.

Stunning guitar. Sadly Albert is the only one of the "3 Kings", I never saw live.(My mom saw him!) Had a chance in 1992 to see him, but we were waiting for a "delivery" that was supposed to be at my residence in "30 minutes"(It wasn't pizza), the guy took 3 hours to show up. We were upset! Any way saw Freddy in 1973, & BB as my last concert in 1989 or 90. Met Fred's son Freddy Jr, in Dallas when he opened for Johnny Winter.

Considering that Dan Erlewine ripped off a Gibson Flying V with some fancy inlays, he's got some nerve to deny you to copy it. You did a beautiful job!

I was going to post the same comment. And I have learned a lot from Dan but really?

With respect, I disagree. My opinion here, take it or leave it. Yes, it was a Gibson design in general, but what Dan built was a one-of-a-kind bespoke instrument that was purpose built and individualized for Albert King complete with his name on the fretboard and the name Lucy on the headstock. What the Flame customer wanted was an identical clone counterfeit Albert King Lucy, not just a Gibson Flying V. A buddy of mine paid like 6 grand for a Fender Custom Shop Gilmore Black Strat, with identical nicks and buckle rash as David's, same stubby custom switch, short whammy bar. He probably could have found a better fitting guitar for his playing style for half the price. It's just 'living in mom's basement' weird shit. Joe Perry's 'boneyard', Stevie Ray's Number One, etc. I, personally, hate seeing these masterpieces cloned, counterfeited, tributed. It's disrespectful. I fully support Dan's decision. I don't expect too many young folks to get that, but whatever. My opinion. And, I honestly don't understand why people WANT a clone of someone's guitar. To me, it's fanaticism gone off the deep end.

@@100amps, Hey Todd, I need to build a V for my grandson sometime after all this other work and GGBO goes away. So I can copy Gibson but not Dan? Smile, just me being a jerk. Love you brother.
@isaacs.4135
@isaacs.4135 3 года назад
@@100amps I absolutely agree with you on the fanaticism bs. Although, you cannot possibly compare a counterfeit copy (which Dan did of a Gibson Flying V) with an original Custom Shop Artist Fender or Gibson tribute. That's just basic brand design copyright issues. Dan obviously only changed the headstock design solely that reason. Also, Dan said that HE wanted to make the copy and take the money for the job. Dude, that's just pure greed. I just simply don't buy it. You cannot copy another guitar brand design and change the inlays and then get pissed off if someone wants to make a clone of it if it's not you own damn design. He copied it on the first place, but now that the guitar is famous, he pretends like it's his own design. It's just not. It's a copy of a copy.
@100amps
@100amps 3 года назад
@@isaacs.4135, I don't know the whole story behind this guitar, so perhaps I've jumped to some conclusions. I guess I draw the hard line at cloning, identical copying, counterfeiting in the sense that the intention is to deceive. If a guitar says Gibson on it, it had better be made by Gibson. The rest is just the fanaticism bs.

Beautiful craftsmanship David, as always. An interesting choice to have a lefty custom built for a right-hander but, wow, what a lovely guitar - Ian Dow must be delighted with it. Really good to also hear it played on the video - a great idea.

Thanks Ian. A lefty played by a right-handed player was Ian's choice. As a consequence the neck has fret markers on both edges of the fretboard.

Amazing work and its a bit strange that Dan said no! Didn't he just copy the Gibson V shape with the gibson open book headstock shape? Beautiful workmanship

I was thinking the same thing, David ,being a gentleman about it, got rebuffed, which I find uncomfotable.When you think of it, Earlewine would never have got to see or hear about it anyway. He would have looked a lot better to have given his blessing,and garnered some respect from us guitar freaks.

Yup, lost a lot of respect for that guy. His ego got in the way of something that he could be proud of. I don’t care who you are but to have someone admire something youve done to the point they want to replicate it? That’s pretty amazing.

Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, the finish is sprayed. I invested in a professional quality spray system quite a few years ago. I have a basic spray booth, which is fine for the number of guitars I spray each year. Greetings from London

Americans would try to convince the world that they invented the wheel given half the chance. Dan Erlewine is unquestionably an extremely well respected and knowledgable luthier but, as with 'all' Americans, he is also extremely capable when it comes to self promotion and giving the impression that his talents are something that is exclusive to an American. There have been in the past many exceptional luthiers, there are now, and will be in the future that are as capable (if not more so) than Erlewine most of whom are 'not' Americans. We live in a world that is entirely dominated by a relentlessly promoted perception that America and Americans are better that absolutely everything. The consequence is an unthinkable disrespect to every other living soul on this planet, many of whom are far more talented than people that 'imagine' that they have a head-start on greatness simply by being born in the USA. Sorry for the rant, but you should build anything and everything you want and not defer to those people, 'ever'!!!!

saying that a guitar sounds well is the same as saying that the keys from a keyboard sound well : it's not the guitar that sounds well, it's all the electronic behind and mainly the mics, the pedals & the amp... and the guy playing it.

By "well" do you mean "good"? If so, are you suggesting that instead of saying that I like the sound of a particular guitar, I should be saying I like the sound of the pickups, pedals, amp and person playing. Seems unnecessarily long winded to do so and achieves nothing.
