JLCPCB Prototype for $2(Any Color): jlcpcb.com
We are going to built a wind generator using a hub motor..
This homemade wind generator is built by using permanent magnet brushless hub motor from an old hoverboard.
The hub motor can be a good generator as it produces sufficient voltage even with a quick spin of hand. So in this project we dissassembled an old hoverboard to use its brushless hub motor as a wind generator.
We have made a customized adapter to fit over the hub motor and act as a holder for turbine blades. Thus the blades will help the motor spin as the wind passes through the blades.
The wind turbine is able to produce 150 watts of power with a wind speed of nearly 5 to 7km/s.
Since our hub motor produces a three phase alternating current so to make it more useful what we are going to do is to design and built a three phase rectifier circuit which allows us to convert three phase AC into DC output.
The schematic, gerber files and the list of components for the rectifier circuit is avlaible here:
drive.google.c...
For more detailed information about the project visit the instructables blogspot:

that is like 15mph/25kph. I have to wonder how much more efficient it would be with an off the shelf rotor/blade assembly.

As an experiment it's a good video and has been low cost. As all the other comments say, would be nice to have a follow up video to see what has been learned from the design e.g. Did bearings survive? Did the metal parts require any maintenance, what power did it generate. Ideally what people want is a low cost design to produce about 1 to 2 kWh per day minimum

Very cool and well done project. I do want to make a suggestion about keeping an eye on that motor/generator because the bearings in it are not tapered roller bearings...they're plain roller bearings which are designed for vertical downward thrust...like standing on the hover board, but with wind power, that thrust is now pushing horizontal and not vertical, so those bearings might start to wear out much faster than normal. Still a great build and fun project, but just some thing to keep an eye on and repair as needed before it fails completely and ruins the gen head on you. Keep up the great work.

Power output is the most relevant figure in this project, and it's missing. Well, from a long, long page, in another faraway server, I found this bit of information: "The generator is able to produce nearly 150 watts of power (12-15v at 14-10 Apms) with a wind speed of nearly 5 to 7 m/s"

Nice work, you got my subscription, Some tips, weld a stiffener on the back of the turbine tail bar, it is flopping a lot, at that leverage it will put unwanted high amplitude vibration during high wind velocity and may cause shorter life span over time. Also, it is always important to discuss electrical power in terms of watt power = volts x Amps, not just to mention voltage as it needs amperage to obtain useful power. Liked your work. Thumps up.

GREAT recycling of a device and the workmanship was outstanding Now for a bit of criticism your fin on your wind vane is cavitating (vibrating) you need to change its shape or reduce its size. That cavitation is reducing your efficiency and in turn your voltage generation (look at your own video it shows the fin "wobbling") Bottom line it is GREAT workmanship and ingenuity (if your not and engineer you SHOULD become one)

@Teknopottu
@Teknopottu 3 года назад
Yes but torque would drop too. So perhaps larger blades or deal with smaller wattage with less breaking parts. This would definatelly need a brake of some kind as it is. Maybe electrical coming from charge controller or automatically tilting tail when the wind is too high. Latter would require some calculations but with the power of internet search engines...

@@Teknopottu hoverboard motors have hall sensors on them. So, by this you can use an esp8266 and set a maximum rotation allowed. When this is passed a mechanical brake can kick in or a servo can change the position of the tail maybe? It is not that hard.

Would be nice to see some statistics - a graph of wind speed and produced power. Also, you have rigid connection of the tail - this could be a problem if wind rapidly changes direction - due to gyroscopic effect the rotor will resist to turning and there will be big forces. There are some clever ideas how to use springs on the tail to reduce the forces and also how to make the tail turn this thing a bit sideways in high winds to reduce speed and avoid breaking.
