Building a Work Shop: Framing Overhangs and Preparing for Roof

On today's episode I take you through framing overhangs on a post frame and why we install our tails separately. Also, I show our double X bracing that we use for shear until the steel diaphragm is completed. I wrap up the episode with prepping for roof, and the process we take to straighten and square the roof structure prior to installing our steel!
I quickly run thru what it's like when you show up to site after a snow fall. It's not fun, but it's part of building in the winter in the midwest!

It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book ru-vid.comUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

We are building our 56x40 barn, and using you for a reference. We are 66 and 71, so not quite as quick, but doing fine. Ours. Is 17 high to fit the RV. 4 trusses set and if the wind dies some we will be squaring and overhangs shortly. Sure do appreciate your help!!!

I hold down a desk during the weekdays, When I get tired of filling out TPS reports I watch your videos. I don't have much to complain about with my desk job. I wouldn't mind being outside building stuff though. If I could start over the day after high school I would go get a job in the trades. Construction and building stuff is an honorable profession. Keep up the good work.

I've been "researching" pole barn construction and have to say, you have it down pat. The perma column brackets and your method of raising the walls is quite slick. Much better than the way we use to do it. I'm preparing to build a huge pole barn for horses and an indoor riding area when I found your videos on how you put the up I knew putting poles in the ground was not the way to do it. I have 70 12' sono tubes I got for free and plan to do a perma column like you are doing.

Kyle very good information on how to get a building square! This project is coming along really good! My last job I worked outside all winter after 28 years baking in an aluminum smelter. To be able to do roof steel I have used roofing torch with a 20lb propane tank...just keep it above the Perlins a bit and melt the ice quick ....just really depends on how bad the job needs to be finished...if you have time just wait it out it not melt it n keep it moving👍just a tip

Tip: Change your socks at lunch time....Change into another pair of boots/shoes too....you’ll find it so much nicer to work with dry warm feet in the winter time. It really boosts your morale and makes you feel warmer when your feet are dry. A one piece “Gumby Suit” is nice too...like a snow suit but for work....keeps the back warm.
