Building a Work Shop: Large Over Head Door Framing

In episode 9 of the building a work shop series, it became freezing cold outside, and we truly got very little done. This project is definitely dragging on in our minds, but we have to keep moving forward for our insulators to shop up. We work on framing for our 24x14 overhead door and show how we install a header on an end wall when a large opening is required.
There are many different ways to do this, but we have had good luck, and when everything is said and done, the header will be rock solid. I also show how we install our roof bracing that will permanently stay in our structure.
If you'd like to support me, below are various ways to help!

As a Carpenter I wonder how many people watch your videos and think they can do this. You make it look so easy but I realize you have extreme talent through experience and repetition even on something as mundane and simple as using a impact or skilsaw. I've always believed Carpenters could have been Surgeon's just as easily. Great work.

Although I'm not into this domain, I just CAN'T stop watching your series! I do have a great ability to spot quality work and intelligence, and you master both skills in a natural way! Paying a lot of money on tools, and knowing how to use them properly, in order to ease your work is something that makes the difference between a pro and an amateur! Congrats for all of these, you make it look easy from down here!

@Peter Lee Maybe you don't understand what I said. The insulation guy can work on the other 3 walls while Kyle and crew put up the last wall which won't take that long because of the large door opening. No big deal actually. I've been in the insulation field since 1994 as an installer and a company owner since 2001.

I live in Australia, we call those plates "Gang Nails" for the person who made the Negative comment, all fixings are determined by the Truss Company, based on the area where the structure is built & of course the size of the structure. This is based on the State codes, in reality it has nothing to do with you, what size these plates are. I watch every episode, love your work Ethics, no Snow here where I live, just Cyclones & I have to build to code, we get a Frame inspection before the Roof goes on.

You could make a killing up here in Wisconsin this summer rebuilding. We had 54 inches of snow in February and many pole buildings have went down. I increased insurance on my shed and my insurance agent said they've had at least 25 claims of collapsed pole buildings. I paid a crew to remove all the snow off mine.

I agree with the straight shaft on the new screws. Funny thing is, that isn't something new. Only to that brand. The only way the old ones worked properly is if you pre-drilled the outside board or if you clamped the two boards together before driving in the screw. You don't want either if you are doing production work. Hell, I don't want that with one of a kind work!!! ;)

I used some of the new deck mate screw design on a pergola I built the other day . I definitely was not impressed I ran one in a board 3/4 s deep put my hammer on it to help take some twist out before I end screwed it . I ended pulling the screw out as if it was a smooth nail . Definitely going to do a couple tests hopefully it’s just an isolated case .

In 'well designed' steel built airplane hangers with massive door openings they are called "wind struts", there are many and very ridged with large bolts for attachments. Typically spaced at 8' or less for 100+mph wind loading. Your wind bracing sticks seem inadequate due to excessive spacing and inferior attachment at the top end. Butt jointing without the sheer protection use of a cleat, would not withstand the repetitive in and out pulsing of high wind on the brace attachment point over time. A wind blowing away from that wall will cause a low pressure on the out side making the wall flex outward. You have to protect against both in AND out movement. Simply 'screwing' it down does not make it a strong connection in this situation. Go back and add some cleats. Just my observation. respectfully/greg
@Joshua79C
@Joshua79C 5 лет назад
Schweiss shows how bracing is to be assembled and it shows use of bolts, not just screws for wood framing, bolts and not welded for metal frame buildings, for either lift strap bifold or one piece hydraulic.
