Building a WORKBENCH That Does Something No Other Workbench Can

This workbench has a trick up its sleeve! I built a workbench that does something no other workbench can. This DIY workbench has a UHMWPE top that allows me to pour epoxy directly on the surface. The epoxy peels up cleanly once it cures. This workbench is not just functional as an epoxy pour workbench. It functions as a traditional workbench featuring 4 finger jointed drawers that pull out from either side. I designed this workbench in sketchup and cut all the parts on my AVID cnc. You could build a similar version of this workbench for yourself by simplifying the base design. I just wanted mine to look awesome!

The first half of the ru-vid.comUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

"No sag" Your top needs at least one run going the length of the table to be a torsion box otherwise its essentially just 2 sheets of plywood. I'd totally drop that much for a bench top but I don't think I'd cut the grooves into it, I think that might limit it in the future. Very cool design though, I like it.

Yeah, I'd have a hard time justifying those grooves in a $615 board. I think I'd try to find ANY other way to get the functionality that the grooves will theoretically give.

I watched to the end but I will not be dictated too. I will not write no sag 'cause I'm a rebel. 😁 I read a few of the comments and I have to agree with the others. You don't have a torsion box. Any unevenness in your floor can result in twisting of the table top. I like the concept of the slide through drawers but I think I'd approach it a little differently. I'd put together a true torsion box and then add the drawer section underneath. I'd also inset the legs a bit (I run into enough things already). Also, even though it's UHMWPE, it's still relatively soft and can get scratched and dinged up over time. I used to be in the composites business and I had a flat mold that had a gelcoated fiberglass top. I built a plywood cover for it that I could take off when I needed to use the mold surface and cover it to protect the surface and use it as a workbench when the mold wasn't needed. The cover was just a sheet of 1/2" plywood with a 1x2 trim board around it so the ply wouldn't slide off. Just a thought to help protect that $$$ investment.

Your torsion box is only halfway towards a torsion box, so it makes sense that it sags. You need verticals going both directions, not just one, if you want no sag

Without several ribs running the length there is no torsion prevention to it. He can lift one corner and the whole table will twist. I agree as well.

This is just a poorly designed fancy table. CNC does not mean well designed. How does a channel like this get 433K subs? I guess people love a train wreck.

I would totally use a UHMW bench. Might have to make one now 😄 The strength of a torsion box (aka stress skin) comes from what is essentially an I-beam made from the ribs, top skin, and bottom skin. Without going into the structural math, you need ribs running the length of the unit that are glued to the skins if you want added strength in that direction. The aesthetics of those legs is awesome! No sag

I know it's more difficult to see some of these flaws while designing/building but as a certified back-seat carpenter I saw it while you were assembling that the center section had no triangulation or truss properties. Rather than add a center leg I would have added full-length trusses under the second sheet, and glued them to the legs on each end.

no sag - love the design and use of the CNC for the box joints (no dog bones for the female rectangles???). A bit much $$ for me on the top, but understand the usefulness if pouring epoxy regularly. As others have said, a vertical member in the bottom or center of the top would likely cure your sag. Love the video - keep them coming.

PPG paints sells a paint called "Breakthrough" that is a waterbased paint designed to act like oil based paints. It's finish is extremely tough and depending on how many coats you apply, can act like a stain by allowing the woods grain to show through if you prefer.

I'd love to add HDPE or UHMW to all my assembly and resin pouring workbenches but here in Australia, I'd be looking at somewhere in the region of $5000 for that as compared to maybe $200 for 5 or 6 sheets of melamine. I'm just about to swap out my melamine for new sheets for the first time in 2 years as they're a bit battered and bruised now but still, that's a HUGE price differential. The resin I use pops straight off melamine without a single issue so the only bits I ever throw away are the edge pieces and as a rule, I don't often build forms for my tables anyway, I tape off the river, clamp down to the bench and pour and then cut to size when I'm done. Works like a charm. I'd be worried that I'd do more damage to the UHMW trying to get the slabs up off it. And then you've wasted a phenomenal amount of money. But, if money is no object then I guess, yeah, it's nice.

I have used uhmw for all sorts of things. This stuff is truly amazing. I keep finding more uses. It is worth every penny.

This is RU-vid woodworking at its best and I must confess I am envious - of your large workshop and CNC machine. I was designing workbenches out of plywood along similar lines back in 1990 (a project in my book Electric Woodwork) years before RU-vid. My only contribution to the sagging issue is you could double up on the thickness of the plywood for the topwhich will also give you a stout surface to use a mallet or hammer on the top (assuming these techniques are used in the USA). Filling in the rear of the drawer openings or adding triangulation there would help. I love the scultural form and the use of this plywood (It is called Brazilian pine) I have been using variants of this for my furniture designs since 1979 is precisely why I am building a CNc machine. You beat me to it! This is a refreshing non myth busting non clickbait video as anyone can see from the thumbnail what is promised in the video. There are some great drawer constructionds there and novel tool extensions used. Nice.

"No Sag" 🙂 I was just doing some maths and trying to see if it would be worth buying the fancy top to use for appoxy projects and got a HUGE surprises. Say you were doing a load or large tables or some other project that required a large area of appoxy. $600÷$40 (expensive fancy top ÷ sheet of melamine) = 15 sheets!!! You only need to mess up 15 sheets of melamine before it would have been cheaper to buy the fancy material!! If I used resin on a regular basis I know which I'd choose. Good advice, thanks 😊

Excellent design and I love the industrial esthetic. You could fix the sag problem easily by using sides for the box also made of plywood (something similar to Ron Paulk's design). The strength in the box comes from the sides.

very cool! The first thing that came to mind about the plastic top is that there are a lot of small plastic recyclers making sheet goods that are affiliated with the Precious Plastics movement around the world, may have been able to save a few hundred bucks buying a recycled sheet of PE or HDPE. very cool idea for what you are doing., got a new subscriber out of it.

Instead of a 3rd leg make a 4" I beam out of 3/4 ply and run it along the underside.Cutting the parts out with you CNC and with glue the beam would be super strong. Love the bench! I would def spend the cash for a top like that.

Nice looking build. A few comments/ suggestions for your structure. Some of those pinned/ Glued joints could use some screws after the fact, and screws to attach the legs to the table instead of glued in case modifications or repairs are ever needed. I wouldn’t call that a true torsion box with no longitudinal members, sag ought to have been expected in that set up. If the top was a torsions box and didn’t sag I’d still suggest a stringer run between the bottom of those two outer legs and the center one would not be required. It’s nice to make fancy cool looking things in CAD, and CNC skills, you clearly have that down, now I’d just suggest brushing up on some basics of structures. If the designed were refined a little more it almost looks like something you could package up and sell to consumers, or at least your plans/models.

3:14 Regardless if the tabs are tight or not, I can visibly see in the video there is a bow and that the top/bottom is not flat and true. This top should have been clamped with cauls. As for the warping the other way at 5:45 "Torsion" box designs require stringers. This is where they get their strength and rigidity from.

That is one awesome workbench!! That top is a great idea if you do a lot of epoxy pours. Love the idea of not throwing money away to the dump. I vote that you clear the plywood.

I'm going to agree with others who've said that your design doesn't quite make a torsion box because you don't have any beams running lengthwise. That third leg in the middle will find every little un-level spot in your floor.

12 months ago I spent $1200 on 10mm thick aluminium sheet for my table tops. If I was to buy the same aluminium today, it would cost over $2500. I do want to get removable UHMW to cover the tops when I am doing pours. But I don't want it to get damaged if I was to use it as a work bench aswell.

Great looking bench. I personally would have turned the curved legs around so they curved in, that way your not banging your knees on them when you walk around. Although the top has a pretty good overhang so it might be alright.

Cutting grooves into the top is probably a bit of overkill. Manor Wood just hot glues lengths of HDPE on his pour surfaces

Why not just put some splines under the bottom of the “torsion box”? It would’ve added the strength your looking for. I put torsion box in quotes because torsion boxes by definition have boards that run in square grids so that it prevents racking in all directions.

The bench does look cool. Couple suggestions. Instead of rhe center support touching the ground you could have made/added something like an I-beam down the center for support. 2nd, I'm sure you will notice over time your drawers will be hard to pull. I'd recommend you take a little off the height of each. Then add a small piece 1/8" thick, running the length of each drawer on the bottom edge. Then you can run wax along these. The wax will make them slide very smoothly and easily. Be careful you dont pull them out the first time. Also, depending on usage you'll need to reapply wax every few months. You can use a simple house hold candle for the wax. Cool work bench though.

I spend 40$ on wheels for my workbench. Maybe add 30$ more for the screws and bolts. Everything else was reclaimed wood... pine lumber, oak lumber, some framing, some 1x6... but good stuff. I placed a sheet of left over vinyl on top. Once the top of your UHMW gets a few scratches on it... it will become harder to peel that resin off, FYI. Oh, and it will get micro scratches, trust me.

Even with the UHMW (I have a 4'x8' HDPE top that is the base for any sized mold I need)...you still should use some silicone oil spread out and left to dry for the large table sized pours. This will take care of any micro grooves in the surface where the epoxy will look to grab onto...

You might want a slight draft angle (2 or 3 degrees) on your slots, or if you do a big epoxy project that has a groove through the middle of your "mold box", if epoxy filled it, it would be a really thick piece and would likely be hard to get out of the groove, even if it doesn't stick at all.

Such a simple way to locate and secure the material to the bed of your cnc. Love it! I have to ask thou... How often do you hit a nail? And how many nails till you start to see a difference in the cutting action and need to change the bit?
