How do you even get started in making a photo book? Here's one possible way - start by using images that build the narrative of the world with in the book.
We take a look through Sleeping Along the Mississippi, Minutes to Midnight, and Iowa to get an idea of how creating a world within a photo book can work. Then I go through my most recent zine, Poacher, and break down how I used this technique to create the world of the zine.

Your zine “Poacher” has such an intriguing blend of themes! It gives me some ideas for my own project, involving the defense research around Kirtland AFB and Manzano Base near ABQ.

Thanks for that, Reid. Feels like there are at least 10 more longer videos packed in there as you clearly have a lot of knowledge and have developed your own process. I'm just getting into creating photobooks (very handmade) and am struck by how often the cohesiveness of any project requires me to leave out one or more of my favourite images. Always feels like a significant sacrifice!

Totally! I feel like that trouble of having to make hard cuts in a book is worth a couple videos at least! The hardest part of putting a sequence of work together is always figuring out what it DOESN'T need!

Like the idea of pulling out photos and then layering them together with examples of other media from a theme, such as the radio/number stuff here. As you say, build a narrative around what is available, and see what can we weaved together.
