Warning: do not attempt the actions seen in this video!
In today's video, I'll be making a high-voltage DC X-ray power supply which ill be using for some future X-ray projects!
Enjoy! :)

I'm not really an electronics or physics guy, but you made this really interesting.

When you rewound your primary it’s likely that you adjusted the number of turns around the core which especially on a flyback will have a big difference on output voltage. As an example if the transformer had a 1:100 winding ratio then 10V on the input would be 10KV on the output if you put 2 windings on then it’s effectively halved to 1:50 and you’d only get 5KV at your same 10V input. So less turns = more voltage but also increases the risk of internal arcing of the transformer and overcurrent from the ZVS.

In printers, the high voltage (from a corotron, for example) is divided by a very high-resistance divider to a value that is suitable for the PWM controller. Then a buffer op-amp with unity gain is installed to match the impedance and then op-amp output goes to the feedback input of the PWM controller. And the PWM controller, in turn, controls the power supply of the high-voltage converter, or directly (through a driver actually) its switching elements (MOSFETs or IGBTs). This allows you to set the output voltage with sufficient accuracy.

It would be useful to add a resistor for high voltage (and low inductance) to the output of the multiplier. By limiting the current a little, it extends the life of the diodes and in case of electrical discharges it prevents dangerous inductive spikes in the circuit.

Try using a flyback from a gas grill igniter, the battery operated ones, not the piezo ones. Drive with zvs and feed output into multiplier, scary loud output from multiplier
@firefox1136
@firefox1136 Год назад
Nice psu But using a buck converter to power an LED kinda broke me, using a series resistor would have been much easier. Also add some filtering before the ZVS as the "DC" from the rectifier will be pulsed. A capacitor will help to get a more smooth DC and maybe more output.

3:20 my thoughts exactly when i built my own multiplier hahaha what x ray tube do you plan on using? i have used a $10 2x2A rectifier tube with no joke about 100kV across it and it did not burn out / overheat the heater filament. to use a very cheap tube, u need to have a high exposure time on your camera to really brighten the image to get decent scans
@PyrotechnicalScience
@PyrotechnicalScience Год назад
I have both the 2x2A tube and a mammogram X-ray tube. I haven’t pushed more than like 30kv on the 2x2A but got ok radiographs out. The mammogram tube on the other hand will make a nice radiograph in half a second.

No current limiting? Unless you're running a very powerful X-ray tube (which has dangers of its own) you may as well limit the current. Makes it less likely to kill you should something go wrong.

Your numbers are way off due expecting breakdown voltage of air to be the relevant number (3 kV/mm). Due Townsend avalanche you will see arching with bit over 1 kV/mm.

@PyrotechnicalScience
@PyrotechnicalScience Год назад
the Townsend effect shouldn’t effect initial arc over length. Although due to non standard conditions voltage breakdown may be in the 2kv/mm range with the spheres. Cant tell for sure though without a true high voltage probe.
@user255
@user255 Год назад
@@PyrotechnicalScience Yes, with smooth spheres you can expect more than 1 kV/mm, but 3 kV/mm is still way too much.
@user255
@user255 Год назад
@@cooldude7301 Probably not. You can get x-rays (soft x-rays) with much lower voltage, if the tube is good. However the produced x-rays may not be suitable for example medical imaging.

Sorry but that is not 90kV. 3kv per mm would be with sharp points like nails, and probably in higher humidity and temp conditions. With the balls of steel it looks like probably 25-30mm, and it could very well be about 20kV or so.
