i found this very helpful. and watching a few times pt1-2 gave me more confidence to rebuild and work my 14 motor wich is now dissasembled awaiting new pistons and rod stretch bolts. ps a disassemble video would not have gone astray or unwatched . thanks dude 😎
Hey, thanks for making these videos. Question... I have a 2022 ZX-14R. I've been reading about spun bearings due to oiling issues. There are "upgrades" for this issue that I've seen, like a thicker oil pump plate because supposedly the stock plate can flex under heavy load, causing the oil pressure to drop. Do you know anything about these mods? Is this really necessary? I've found some threads online from guys claiming 60k+ miles on stock motors that have been wheelied liberally as well as run for extended periods at high rpm with no issues other than replacing the steering head bearings. I'm curious what you think about this.
I might be about to buy a 2008 zx14 with supposed rod knock. I haven’t seen it yet, but for the price of the listing I can always part out the bike and get my money back. I was wondering if the engine is rebuildable after rod knock starts to happen? He said he heard it and immediately shut it off and had it towed back. I think that I might be able to get the crank machined and get over sized bearings if it didn’t bend any rods. Is there anything else you recommend I check for on these bikes? I do aircraft maintenance, but I’ve never torn apart a large motorcycle like this.
They are definitely rebuildable with rod knock. Although it depends on the extent of the damage. In my experience, A seller is usually under estimating the extent of the damage. For instance, I have seen cranks twist, damaging the main bearing bores, cylinder walls and the camshaft journals. Which is not worth rebuilding at that point. This bike was purchased with a similar rod knock noise. If you do rebuild it , I would get a service manual and check everything in the engine. Transmission especially. Its not rocket science but experience does help. If you have rebuilt and engine before, it should be easy.
Thanks for the comment! During this video I was doing all of the dirty work. Before this engine gets assembled everything will be thoroughly cleaned, and cleaned again. Including all engine parts and work station. The block and crank are fresh from the machine shop and are contaminated already.
