This video shows the first 48 days after I built a pond aerator system for my 1/4 acre farm pond, in an effort to reduce pond algae and muck. The system went through a few iterations as I dealt with high temperature issues with the pump, but I finally have a good setup now.
Here's a breakdown of my costs to build my aerator system:
Pond Aerator Pump: $167.00
Weighed Aertator Hose: $89.99
Pond Aerator Diffusers: $127.81
12/2 Romex Electrical Wire 250ft: $63.41
Aerator Concrete, Rebar, Conduit: $83.93
Aerator Box Sheet Metal: $41.63
Aerator Housing Fan: $11.99
Green Aerator Box Paint: $3.99
Total Cost: $589.75

You need to put a timer on it and only run it from midnight until about 7 am. That will make a huge improvement!

I have a about a 1/3 acre pond. I put in catfish fingerlings about 4 years ago. The catfish are about 24” long now. We’ve been eating for a couple of years and they are excellent. You’re doing a great job, keep it up 👍🏻

Looking good the fan you put in you might turn it to pull air from inside to outside and drill air holes on opposite end of box and see if that helps

I like that you give a shit to do something about it I would love a pond full or fish

Also, Texas sun and air is hot in summer...maybe create a shade over the box so it's shade heat not direct sun...

I'd recommend you add a vent on the side walls ....like a garage door louder vent (metal)...you will get cross ventilation and more air to help cool the pump...good luck and God bless

Great ideas. My pump house it's exactly air tight so I think it's getting enough cross ventilation but more certainly wouldn't hurt.

@@TexFarmer The pumps are prone to overheating. Adding a small built in fan on one end and a vent on the other will greatly increase the lifespan of your pump

You need to add some vent to your box so it can breathe that's the reason it's hot
@ocalaeyeguy
@ocalaeyeguy 4 года назад
You could also put a timer on the aerator and only run it at night when it’s cooler
@TexFarmer
@TexFarmer 4 года назад
That's something to consider for the pump heat issue, and would also save a little money in energy, however during the heat of the day when the otherwise stagnant pond needs aeration the most, would running the pump only at night be detrimental to the goal of reducing algae and improving water clarity?

Thanks for the very informative video. What diffuser are you using?

Algae needs sunlight and nutrients to grow. If you add some floating pond plants/baskets and/or water lilies, this will help a lot because: These will use up some of the nitrAte, thus starving the algae of nitrAte. They will provide shade. Thus robbing the Algae of sunlight. They will provide somewhere for the fish to hide from overhead predators. They will attract insects which will lay eggs. The fish will eat the larvae and some of the insects.

Great video .... How is your pump working out ? I love the price. Did your pond clean up ? thank you

Great video. How do you get rid of duck weed? Will the aerator help? Look forward to seeing an update video. Good job.
@jiggjohns1028
@jiggjohns1028 4 года назад
The easiest way to get rid of duckweed and the cheapest is with a rope through pond noodles skimming them closer to the edge after a good wind then physically removing them with a dip net.

Do not let cattle near pond Use a solar water pump to fill a container for them My aerator sits on a small rock with a Rubbermaid container over the top.. and running fine for 10 years

I just got the same setup as yours and my pump keeps shutting off. Did you have any problems like this before the fan
@TexFarmer
@TexFarmer 4 года назад
I didn't have any shut off problems, but I was concerned about that which is why I installed the fan. Is the pump shutting off or is the breaker tripping?

Why don't you remove the insulation?
@Swans_And_Ducks

It would be better to extract the warm air pulling cool air through into your box.
@TexFarmer
@TexFarmer 4 года назад
You are correct, I need to get out there and flip the fan around and add some more vents for cross ventilation. The pump is still working great but more ventilation wouldn't hurt.

Tex Farmer how about the water quality and weed control?
@TexFarmer
@TexFarmer 4 года назад
@@Swans_And_Ducks Minimal effect on weeds but major effect on algae. This time of summer the pond would normally be covered in algae, now there's hardly any at all. The water quality I'm certain has improved but my cattle use it as their water source and they keep it stirred up so it still appears murky.

Apparently the pond looks bigger on video than it really is. Its only 1/4 acre.

What kind of fish can you put in your quarter acre pond cause i want to put bass in mine but im not sure if they would breed well
@TexFarmer
@TexFarmer 5 лет назад
You can stock with anything really, catfish, bass, sunfish, crappie. Most fish suppliers have websites that show various packages by the acre, if you have a 1/4 acre pond like mine just divide the numbers by 4. Aeration and feeding along with underwater structures in the form of dead trees, rocks, tires, or artificial structures are going to be a must for any possibility of breeding.

That looks way bigger than a 1/4 acre pond....
@TexFarmer
@TexFarmer 4 года назад
I measured it with Google Earth and it shows the area of the pond is exactly 0.25 acres. I wish it were bigger, I could stock it with more fish then!
@daynejordan6783
@daynejordan6783 4 года назад
@@TexFarmer maybe its just the angle of the camera view. I have a 1/4 acre as well and it just seems smaller. I built my own aerator system similar to yours using a Invacare pump and 2 EPDM rubber aerators. I used a plastic tool box from Harbor Freight for a pump enclosure. I added a fan to one side and a metal grate at the bottom of one side. Plenty of cross flow air to keep it cooler. I also just built a floating pond fountain. Together, the pond hasn't needed chemicals now for almost 2 yrs even in this blistering heat and humidity up here in Ohio. Great videos, thanks again.

Don't feed your fish let nature balance the populations... Uneaten food turns into more pond scum just like cattle feces and urine
