I think we get that very same natural phenomenon occurring in Australia. I suspect that it's a phenomenon that is independent of which hemisphere you live in. Just a guess though. Probably need some serious R&D by NASA to confirm this.

Just so you know: mixing different Flow Resistivity insulation and leaving a small (150mm) air gap from the wall, creates a better absorption on low frequencies. For example: Fabric | 25mm Dacron | 200mm Fiberglass | 25mm Rock Wool | Air gap 150mm Fabric | 2.5k mk/rayls | 5.6k mk/rayls 12kg | 17k mk/rayls 48kg | Air gap 150mm I got that information from multiple studio designers. As well, from John Sayers and John H. Brandt.
@ondabeat

are these layers in reverse order, i.e. Air gap and then RW, then Fibreglass, and the Fabric.

Hey Andrew, cool studio man...great job! I'm doing a studio build myself soon. Quick question: did you put up drywall before hanging the acoustical treatment or did you just put the panels right on top of the framing and insulation? thanks!
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 4 года назад
@@jorgecorante The room had existing finished walls, insulated, drywalled, with old panelling. I then built 12" bass traps framed to the room. The framing I added are essentially huge absorption panels on every wall. So The frames contain 4 sheets of rockwool insulation, and are wrapped in acoustic fabric. There is no added drywall. The primary use of the room is for mixing, with occasional overdubs so it wasn't necessary to completely isolate the room. By converting all of the walls into panels, I eliminated the need to hang any panels (except for the cloud above my head). So far, it has worked out incredibly. Fantastic translation of mixes from my room to other listening systems.

@roncoreharris
@roncoreharris 4 года назад
You would have achieved greater isolation with de-coupling the room and using a double leaf system with a 3" air gap between the leaves. All you would have had to do was pull that paneling off and create a double leaf. Lot's of great resources for that on the internet, check our John Sayers forum or the Gearslutz Studio forums. With that being said, If it works for you, that's all that matters!

This is an awesome studio man! One day I hope to build one like this. My only concern for your electrical is at 2:05. It looks like you piggybacked off an existing outlet and left an inaccessible junction box in your wall. Junction boxes are supposed to be accessible in case of a short circuit and your wire-nuts come apart. Love your channel and just want you to be safe! I'm a Master Electrician with over 10 years experience.
@ricknelsonduke
@ricknelsonduke 4 года назад
Was wondering that myself - what would the better solution be? Neoprene heat sleeve with no box? I understand what he did to get the insulation in there, but wondered what a code move might have been, pulling the old cable back up and over to the new studs then run down? Somewhere in there would be a junction or a splice...
@PressuredSpeechBand
@PressuredSpeechBand 4 года назад
@@ricknelsonduke If possible pull a new run or work the cable back where you can legally put a junction box for future use. I think they also make bury in the wall splice kits, but I would avoid using that method.

Great video! I'm building out a studio in roughly the same size space (a single car garage, cement floor, cinder block walls, wood ceiling with 6" joists). I'm figuring out what I need to do on the sound treatment front. Your use case is way more pro than mine, but similar: having a great home studio to track drums, mix, and occasionally guitars/bass/vox/keys, etc. I also have a scarlett 18iwhatever and an Apollo x8p that hasn't arrived yet. Double gyprock boards with acoustic sealant is the way to go to sound proof the room. The insulation wool is good but even 3 layers will not be that effective if you want a well insulated recording room.
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 4 года назад
Totally agree, my goal was not sound proofing but a very specific acoustic treatment design from Eric Valentine. I've been rocking in this room for 9 months and it's been unbelievable how well music sounds in this room and how great the mixes translate.

@hotrodjones74 4 года назад
Buy lightly used gear when you can. There are always people selling music equipment and it rapidly loses value after you buy it. BTW Liam Gallagher from Oasis used an Epiphone Les Paul when recording their first album because he couldn't afford a Gibson at the time. Oasis was pretty damned good as I recall. Moral of the story you don't need top of the line gear to sound great. Mid range equipment will usually work. Your playing is the most important part.

Andrew Masters obviously you used a lot of rockwool in the walls, but nothing special for the floor, ceiling or door. It looks great, but im planning on building one of these in my garden. Hows the external noise for yours? Is it silent outside? Mines a super residential area so ill need silence, very fearful of starting it and it being a failure! Thanks for this its really helpful
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 4 года назад
@@DanielS10291 You got it! Thanks. The design of this studio is not for sound "isolation" but for sound "treatment." It's a completely different design if you intend to isolate sound from getting in or going out. The design I did was to take an existing structure, and, on a budget, make it an excellent listening environment for mixing and for overdubs. I don't use my studio for tracking full bands or anything like that so it's unnecessary for me. I also live on a large lot so my neighbors aren't very close to me.

Great job. 🤔 Not enough room for my drums though. 😁

Hey you might find this interesting, so I got this 2,2 by 3 by 2,2(h) meter cabin and I'm thinking about getting rid of the corners. I'm thinking about making transitions on the corners, but this would then still leave a corner with the ceiling. To really get that 3D ark takes a lot of wood and time. So I'm thinking instead of transitions still make corners but just make them way less sharp than 90 degrees. and filling up the gaps with rockwool of course. It's going to be longterm as I'm collecting rockwool for free from a lot of builders who got rest material but I got enough for 1 wall now, the wood I got now for about half the surfaces when that's done it will be like leakproof so I can drum a little louder without worrying about others too much and have better audio quality inside. But I thought the whole arking might be cool looking maybe to do it 2D and just stuff the transition with the ceiling somehow, it would eliminate the vertical corners at least

@@AndrewMasters Got a nice deal on rockwool today, not free, but still very cheap and it's probably going to be enough for the whole space

@AndrewMasters I just re-watched this and I noticed that your skin looked so much better 4 years ago! Maybe have your vitamin B6 / B12 levels checked ... I had loads of skin issues (and also a high homecystein level, indicating kidney troubles) in November, I've been taking a vitamin B complex for 5 weeks now and my skin improved by a TON (even though my diet did include a lot of stuff that already covered vitamin B). Worth a try, I feel a lot better now.
