Building an Ottavino Spinet 

You know what? Now I wanna build a Bohlen-Pierce trittavino spinet 43 keys, 3 tritaves + 4 notes

All that work to make a musical instrument? Yes, and it gives me hope for humankind. We should spend more time making beauty than manufacturing warfare. Ya think? I’ve learned to do maintenance and minor tuning and repair on my free-reed wind instrument. I truly understand that musical instruments require the kind of patience and precision shown here. Kudos and much respect to Mr. Nadel.

What an insane build

Buitaful, ideda, design, exicution, and sound. I heard a restored antique harpsicord that had always been well cared for, about 70 years ago, this one brought back a lot of good memories. THANKS!!

i have plans for clavichord, and watching you do this gave me hope! I'll have to wait until i have the funds for lumber, time, and access to a shop, but i'm more excited than ever thanks to this video.

The sound is as beautiful as the woodwork. Just two octaves are good enough for such a rich instrument.

Long tuning hammer... I did the same modification for my lyre.... lol. I'm going to design a portable keyboard instrument now that I've seen this.

The ottavino (sounding E4-F6) has the density, timbre, intensity, and tonal quality of a soprano singer while the normal instrument (sounding E3-F5) has the density, timbre, intensity, and tonal quality of an alto singer!!!

What were you playing at 19:22? It sounds very familiar, but I can't place it.

I built one of these about 10 years ago. Things went smoothly until I got the the plectra. They were too short and stiff, the keys are too short in the spinet configuration. Playing is very hard and not reliable. Other configs have longer keys but string spacing is still too narrow. Builders beware.

I don't think the Ottavino is a child's instrument. The name means "higher octaves" A piano has 88 notes and a harpsichord has 61 notes. Your instrument has 26 notes I suspect that the Ottavino was made as an addition to existing Harpsichords , probably set on top of ,or next to, a harpsichord so the Harpsichordist could play music written for the piano. I think they were real instruments that were paired up with full size harpsichords. Edit: I just read up on classic Harpsichords and found out that the Harpsichords were eventually made with a second row of keys installed to extend the range. So I guess the Ottavino is a way of retrofitting older harpsichords to have a similar range as the newer ones.

that last spinnet sounded a bit out of tune, or maybe it was just the phrase you played that sounded slightly off
