Building an outdoor wood burning furnace

The entire process of building an outdoor wood burning furnace. This furnace is now heating a 5,000 sq. ft. house and it's domestic hot water. This is the way to get off of using oil to heat your house. After 3 months of construction and roughly $3,000 in materials and scrap that was laying around, we are now heating the house for free. A Do it yourself (DIY) project.

WOW!! Now that is a project! This guy is my hero. Good job. I put PEX throughout my whole house, replaced all the old copper plumbing with manifold system. LOVE IT! I have oil boiler now, and would love to have something like this. forget utility, oil etc... taxes and overpricing.

Not only are you guys great craftsmen but you do great film production as well. I jealous, I used to be able to design and build most my own stuff but, now I'm crippled it's mostly just design. You motivate me to try harder on my reabilitation. You guys need to have your own reality tv show, I'd watch. Again, thanks for the motivation.

Im a journeyman Plumber and I see where your coming from. The entire thing was enclosed and probably insulated. The water lines, brass ball valves, and pump itself would freeze and split long before the pump would ever rust out if it was truly left open. That peticular pump I have personally seen installed outside on cooling towers and air handlers, have even seen one that was over 15 years old sitting in mud outside a building.

A well built and well designed gasfier is a great thing, but somewhat tempermental and requires diligence to use and maintain properly. What this kid built here is simple, safe, and effective, but much different than a gasifier. You are comparing apples to oranges. It like telling someone who bought a car that they should have bought a plane. This kid did a helluva job on this wood furnace.

it is heavy, but for the cost of $3000.00 to build, and saving $1000 per month to heat the house,. I'd say it's one of the best ROI's out there. Heated the house for free this winter.

Awesome! My husband and I watched your video many times and I must say we were both impressed. Question 1 is what are the pipes running thru the tank and what are they for ? (shown at 2:04 ans 2:34) Question 2 is do you have more detailed plans available? Your video was great but we would have liked to see more details that were passed over quickly, including the plumbing diagram. We are planning an outdoor wood fired boiler for our house that we are building on the farm! Thanks!

So this is my question, how do you clean the ashes out of the chamber? Other than that, it looks like a completely awesome idea!! All I would need is wood, which there is none near me at all

Great video! This is a great way to be off-grid (in heating anyway) and still heat ur home and its water supply. I wonder if this would be very difficult for the less mechanically inclined and on a smaller scale. I do have a question tho. Is the heated water for ur home use heated within the chamber that u built around the fire chamber? Or is the heat somehow redirected to a separate water heater and then used from there?
@davegouldinonley
@davegouldinonley 12 лет назад
Did you get an answer to this? I'm interested in the electronic flapper for draft control. I have a Taylor waterstove, but draft does not close down enough when the water in the boiler reaches the proper temp so fire keeps burning (but slower than when fan is stoking it) and I overheat/boil the water on warm nights when I don't need heat in house. Boiling water doesn't circulate easily upstairs in a non-pressurized system so i end up with no heat at all until I can lower the temp of the water

Do you lose much heat to the ground? Only reason I ask is that the pipes don't look very deeply buried or wrapped with much insulation! Also is there much heat transfer between the pipes in the big"o" or does it matter much? Thanks.
@robertsulley
@robertsulley 12 лет назад
Brilliant project! How much welding wire did you use, and how much gas? Also do those 2 heat exchangers really transfer all the energy produced by that furnace?

@glennwanamaker

Answer to your question-Both. The water chamber heats the water-piped into the basement and goes through 2 heat exchangers. One, goes to the hot water heater and the other goes through the house.

Nice to be able to set up something like this; if you were in a small town or even inside city limits someplace, the smoke out the top of the chimney would aggravate the neighbors. How do you get the heat from the water circulation into the rooms? Do you use modern-day radiators? And, nice background music--what is that?

@1kenziesmom Basement is not needed. all you need is oil, gas or forced hot air system, and you can fit one of these to work. Doesn't work with electric baseboard heat.

I'm getting ready to build one with a 55 gallon drum conversion. I'm not a welder and do not plan on hiring a welder to put my box together. Instead I will be using some L brackets from some steel shelves I got for free and some bolts. I got some free steel sheets to use for the box and also have a washer and dryer to cut up if needed. I'll seal it with chimney calk and line a good part of it with fire bricks. I'm just piping the air into my house and will pipe a return into the box through a multi level tunnel made of fire brick until it gets about half way up the box which should increase efficiency a few points. This year I'll be going through a window, but will work next summer to pipe it into the basement. I'm considering adding an oil drip to help heat the fire up a bit. There is never a shortage of free used oil. I'll use some free bricks I got to line the outside for some added protection. Eventually I may add a water tank and use a method similar to the one you show here to heat my 1200 sq ft house with full basement. Nice build. I wish I had your resources to build mine. You should probably stay away from gasoline and fire, btw.

Amazing fab work u guys, i've made a living out of making my own stuff, to include my own wood furnace, and i am impressed. My furnace only heats 1500 sq ft, you said yours will heat 5000 sq ft, how many gallons does it hold? How far from your house is it? How much wood does it consume? And really only $3000? Scrap laying around? Do you have plans (I'll buy them)? I have many questions, please contact me!

monicad33 Thank you for your comments. I will try to answer your questions the best I can. 1. The pipes that run through the burn chamber are to allow water to flow within and get super heated. Does this work? Not sure, but we thought it might be a good idea. 2. As for more detailed plans, we do not have any. Thisboiler was basically designed as we went along. Also, I would assume that the plumbing diagram would be different in each house. Again, thanks and good luck on yours.

@bowtie7985 a cast iron pump will rust because its an open aired system. now in your home if you have a gas or oil burning boiler that you don't ever add water to then a cast iron pump will be fine for that because there is no air in the system at all. now with a outside boiler you have a tank on top and there is usually an air space in the top and for and open system like that you want to use a bronze pump. it will not rust or get damaged.
