Building an RC: Tamiya Egress (Time Lapse)

This is a time lapse build of a custom Tamiya Egress. At the end of the video I show the complete results. In 1989 I came across the Tamiya Egress. I never had an RC when I was young but fantasized about having one or two. I was fully aware of every kit that came out around that time and voraciously read anything RC related. The Egress was one of two (Yokomo 870c was the other) that I dreamt of having. Interestingly, the Tamiya Avante never did much for me, I felt it was an extroverted car that wanted attention. The Egress, an upgraded performance version of the Avante was somewhat the opposite. It’s the Avante’s introverted but more talented sibling, overshadowed by the Avante’s bling. In 2013, the Egress was re-issued. By then, I wasn’t interested in RC cars anymore. But in 2020, I came across a new one for sale and decided to purchase it.
As for the build theme, I was always drawn to one decal on the Egress-“Hairy Ogre.” The Egress was probably Tamiya’s top 4WD pre TRF and it deserves the “Ogre” moniker. But at a glance it doesn’t look as brutish or ogre-like. It needed to be wider and lower (wide like a Yokomo 834B) and low like a CAT XL/S. And the car’s greenhouse needed to be narrower. It was too tall, long, and friendly. I decided to widen it a bit by using two bodies, cutting the sides on one and adding it to the other as an extension. (I kept the original body and decals for the future and used TBG replica bodies). With that effect, it also gave the car a little Japanese culture-it looks like plates from a samurai’s armor. Keeping the silver color was intentional for two reasons: 1) I still wanted it to resemble the iconic Egress at first glance; 2) with the side extensions and samurai armor effect, silver felt natural. The decals for the windows where shortened and re-cut to project an aggressive stare. The decal livery and color was intentional as well. The original orange was always off-didn’t really complement the red/black/silver. So I kept that out. Most of the decals were redone on the computer and cut using a vinyl router. I also had MCI reprint some monochromatic ones because I needed the side panel decals with the Tamiya word.
Since I don’t have a proper track around me, I decided to lower the car just to run on flat surfaces. I think the Egress benefits from a nicer looking stance. I added nylon tube spacers to keep the car low-and also added rear 10mm wheel spacers to add to the width. I added carbon fiber lower side skirts for a more wider look. Then used an AE vintage wing with custom cut endplates. I think visually, the stance, width, wing, narrow greenhouse decals makes it quite aggressive-closer to the “Ogre” moniker. In addition, I’m a fan of Japan’s Super GT Autobacs race, and the team I like is Arta Racing. Their livery palette is somewhat the same and I decided to combine it with the theme. As a little detail, I made decals for my Egress storage bin to mimic something like an Arta toolbox.
As for the mechanical, electronic, and miscellaneous parts, I believe the Egress deserves better parts-if you go for an Egress, improve the parts as well because it’s an iconic kit. There’s a fair number of upgraded aluminum parts. I also used an Acto TRF motor (with upgraded brushes), KO Propo RSX3 servo, and a 1990’s Tekin Pro Pulse 700 ESC-quite brutish in my opinion. It’s an old ESC and a little glitchy but the punch is still insane even if I lower it. In fact, with the motor, I probably could tighten the ball diffs more. But if I had a choice I would’ve maybe installed a Tekin 4xx series. Aside from switching to stainless hex screws, I sparingly used some gold plated hexes, nuts, and turnbuckles (from Square Japan and Kyosho). I think it adds a touch that conveys quality. I wanted different front wheels-something deep/conical but with a similar diameter to the stock Egress wheels. It also had to have a glossy finish. I found vintage Pro-Line wheels and dyed them black. The tires for display use are vintage as well, from CRP-that was intentional because I always liked the lettering style (and the words “Dynamite Racing”) on their tires. For running, I use Pro-Line Shadows (mostly for the thread pattern) paired with Schumacher wheels.

This car was one of my father's dream radio-controlled cars when he was a child. It was very expensive and not something that a child could afford, so he eventually gave up on buying it. I can't believe it's 30 years old, but it's so stylish.

Glad to see that I am not the only one who is so crazy replacing the original screws with stainless or special screws. And cutting threads for the metric screws into the parts too. Your working space is so neat. Mine is so awfully crowded. I admire your style. No bullshit talking, discreet music and no loud crappy stuff. Watching your videos is like Zen Buddhism of RC modelling.

This reminds me of when I built my Losi 22T a few years ago. I took my time and worked on it on the weekends. It took me about a month, but it was beautiful and I felt so accomplished. Took it to my local track and it drove better than it looked. I miss this hobby and living near a RC track in Tacoma WA.

The style of letterings on the tires, and the red hex wheel nut in conjunction with the red paint stripes make this Egress so much nicer. I think the gold upgrades on the various connectors are nice too. The lighting, camera angles and back ground music made your video very relaxing to watch.

I've watched this several times and I'm still amazed at your vision and precise execution of not only this build, but all your other creations... I started out in RC as a very young lad in the very early 80's with a Rough Rider, then bought and painted a Sand Scorcher body when I smashed the original, then upgraded (downgraded) to a Grasshopper when that was released. Wow, what a mistake, the power of the box-art fooled a very young me. My friend, on the other hand, went from a Frog to a HOTSHOT. And THAT car blew my mind. I personally believe the Hotshot was a groundbreaker because it enabled my best friend to humiliate some of the older "snobs" at our local track (who all had RC10's) by winning a third place in his first race! Long story but I now have a Hotshot after nearly 40years and I'd love to see your interpretation...... if not, carry on the good work anyway, I'll still watch hahaha
@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 2 года назад
Thanks, Kester Stott! I appreciate the comment and message! That Rough Rider is an iconic piece of kit and part of RC history-it's truly what started the off-road RC buggy scene and got other brands into building their own off-road buggies. I've definitely thought about the Hot Shot many times and maybe one day will do a build.

Thanks for the reply. I keep most of my useable polycarbonate cut offs, I make custom spoilers out of them and planned on one day making canards/ aero fins to apply to the right buggy. Can I ask where you purchase the carbon sheets? I’d like to try a wide body avante, next build. I have one black and 2 standard NIB ready to roll. I’ve just finished my super astute and about to start a Tamiya 1/25 RC panzer tank for something different. Thanks again 🙏🏼

Tamiya Egress is just one of the best 4wd buggy ever, and you've made it look even better, great job, a thing of beauty, i also liked your blitzer beetle and kyosho javelin.

The Egress was the first RC car I ever bought & built (1990 I think). I still recognise every piece. I've built many more since but you never forget your first, as they say.

I wish I had such a neat workplace like you have...With an uncomfortable cold workplace in the basement, one can´t really enjoy the hobby as much as it would be possible...I´ll have to change that this year !

Thanks, 19Marc79! And thank you for watching. I think the grass is greener on the other side :). I'd love to have a basement where I can remodel and set it up for RC building. My space for the RC hobby/building is only 1.5 meters x 1.5m (or 5ft x 5ft) ;).

I must admit, I'm rather jealous of your technique; so much cleaner than mine. I futz around with things while getting pieces to fit the way I want them, and for you, they all just seem to fall into place. I've been finishing a re-release of the Kyosho Ultima in the last couple of weeks, taking my time with the bodywork, which has been both frustrating as well as satisfying. Please, keep up the incredible work. Cheers.

Thanks again for watching! I posted something and it got deleted! Re-typing if I can remember all of it. I just wanted to say that I do come across problems too. On this build there where a few things that didn't fit nicely The other thing was the vintage ESC-I cleaned the circuit board and even re soldered some parts of the board and it still ended up glitchy. It runs but it needs to be replaced at some point. The motor's capacitor was broken and I tried to fix it because I couldn't find a replacement. However, I think because I have worked on 1:1 cars as a hobby some of these things I can power through. Bodies are still my least favorite for now. What I did was try to work on some challenging bodies in the beginning, like the TC-01(that was a tad insane) and the Beetle hard body. After working on those two, the rest seems easy. The Ultima is a sweet kit! I think that one has a really good balance of vintage and performance. Good luck with it!
@irritablearchitect
@irritablearchitect 3 года назад
@@MechanicAfterHours - Thanks. I agree on the vintage vs. performance comparison; it was ahead of its time in so many ways. I have the bulk of the build complete at this point, and was even able to finish the decals last night. Just a motor to fit and then testing/adjustments. It will most likely be a shelf queen anyway, so I don't know why I even bothered with electronics of any sort. Oh well.
@MechanicAfterHours
@MechanicAfterHours 3 года назад
That's great! I think the electronics make it feel more complete even as a shelf queen. Glad you're getting there!
