@@COASTALWAVESWIRES I just stripped some insulation from some old speaker wire. I’ll find a sinker and toss it in the ocean to test out the Atlantic counterpoise this week.
Hey Walt! Coastal Waves & Wires is my personal therapy session for inspiration and motivation in the amateur radio universe. 👍📻⚡️ So many great ideas and examples! Thanks so much! Tom - WA7FLY
Hi Walt, once again a great video from you. I did some beach work last week using the coil and a whip. Didn't manage over the pond but got well into Europe on 5 watts. Many thanks and good DX G7HUJ.
Been using ham sticks (Shark Antenna & MFJ) since last August for my POTA activations. They do work great on top of my SUV with a tri-mag mount. I need to use my KM4ACK EFHW as little more. I use my Chameleon MPAS 2.0 from time to time also.
Thanks! I got the pole on Amazon, there are several there. Do a search for Telescopic Crappie Pole. I don't think the one I have is available anymore but there are other brands.
Thanks again for excellent video, Walt. I'm going to Iceland with my motorcycle in June, bringing a QRP radio. There will obviously be many beaches, but there aren't any trees so going with vertical. For 20 meters, would you recommend the 1/4 wave resonant vertical? Would of course be nice to have the possibility of 10, 15 and 30m - maybe 40. But worried that performance will suffer on 20m if I make a multiband antenna. Or ... what would you have done? My most important goal is CW contacts with Norway (approx 1000 miles).
I would absolutely pack a collapsible whip and a coil. Absolutely the easiest and best performing antenna to travel with. I’ve done some videos using this setup and I ranked it number 1 in my recent Top 10 video.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Thanks, Walt! Yes, I saw those videos. Looks like a nice and very portable setup. I have the military whip already - just need the coil (I have a buddipole coil, but not nearly as easy to tune as the Sidewinder). Only worries with the coil might be the extremely windy conditions on Iceland.
Good video, saw you on Coffee and Ham Radio this morning and really enjoyed it, I watch them all the time and it looks like you have the same interest that I do so i just Subscribed, nice to meet you❗️73. KV5P
Aloha Uncle Walter, I always enjoy watching your Videos. You really knowing a lot about Antennas. Happy Tuesday Sir, keep up the Good Work! 73 de YFUG 😎👍
Thanks for the summary - I'm on the left coast and good excuse to get that ham stick setup - have all the parts, just need to make some cp wires and give it a go. What length ground rod do you use? 8 foot seems a bit much - 73, AI6OU
Hi Walt! What a great video - very instructional for a beginner ham like me! I have one question - what is the 1:1 balun you use often in many of your antenna setups
Hi Rohan! Thanks! I use banana clips on my verticals in a 1:1 situation, not really a balun but they work well. Here’s a link to where I get mine on Amazon: onelinkmore BNC Female to Dual Banana Female Socket Binding Post RF Coax Splitter Adapter Connector for HF Radio Antennas Pack of 2 a.co/d/hhCCSb5
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Thanks for the quick reply. I have a 9:1, with the hope of making a 49:1 at the club. But always good to seek advice from those who try and test.
Fantastic video - I have the toybox antenna on the IC705 - it has 30m of radials with 5m lengths coming off it, or just clipping an extra long wire to get into the sea sounds like a way to get good DX on 10W of power.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES thanks again for the tips ! it will be an amazing experience to even try this out, might go local in Bournemouth or Poole (UK) to give it a try !
