I have a dream. It's also an assumption. That these two softwares are going to fusion to give birth to the world first "3d package engine" that ll lead the humankind to build the metaverse. Of course free to use under certain revenue and running in the cloud. The merge ll also lead to the union of sidefx labs and quixel as an unified lab. At this point I think they must be discussing the background on how that software is going to be. The life cycle of UE5 may be shorter this time to bring a new thing like unreal H or something like that, the name doesn't matter.

i dont understand the pricing models of houdini. Can a hobbyist afford this?

Their Apprentice version is free for non-commercial purposes

@@flmangoes but you cant use houdini engine with apprentice or export fbx. If you want to start using houdini engine you need an indie license which is $270 a year.

@@RNDM-nd7tj that is correct. They must find a way to pay their engineers somehow. I believe you are able Houdini engine if you can find existing HDAs. I can confirm you won't be able to export FBX assets.

@@RNDM-nd7tj if you are a working professional, $270 is nothing. I pay $50 a week for gas for my car. How much is Creative Cloud per year? How much does the average person spend on Starbucks per year? If $270 is unreasonable then you probably are in a situation where food and shelter are your priorities and it may be a while before you're in a position to spend that much.

With all the new tools and geometry script unreal have added , the team I work have almost completely stop using Houdini. And we have like 10 floating license. Lol😅 No more cocking problems !

Yeah... I was wondering what was going to happen now that geo script is here. If SideFX can tap into geoscript then they can continue to attatch themselve to UE. I imagine Epic will eventually have a fully self contained DCC/Real-time platform where you won't ever need to leave UE.

If unreal could replace everything you was doing with Houdini before, is because you were certainrly not pusing it to its full potential. But im also not happy about houdini engine implentation and agree with frustration

I'm a bit concerned that I spent too much time learning Houdini and never expected unreal to become it's first competitor, now I find myself wondering if it's worth to keep learning Houdini. Even USD is starting to have no sense if u don't plan to leave unreal at all.

@@vincentthomas8492 theres still many things we do in houdini but not much with houdini engine anymore. even the building and street generator are now fully blueprint, booleans tools (dynamic mesh). creating HDA for nanite high poly mesh using the houdini engine is not an option now, even with powerfull machiines.

Are you on discord? Houdini engine for fast interactive design reach quickly some limit and the native build of houdini engine is an issue... Now I hardly see myself building complex full ecosystem like they did in the Matrix demo with only Unreal, might become quickly too open to very dev oriented technical artists . To have a good sense of design to build your procedural rules is also very important, not many people have both at high levels...

Houdini looks really useful but their forced tier-incompatibility scheme where Indie and Commercial cannot open up each others' files, just feels like something straight out of the early 2000s era of anti-consumer draconian DRM, in backlash to Kazaa. They somehow figured out a way to be worse than USB Key Dongles.
