Wow based on your animation, Liverpool Waters, seems like a great development for the city. Crazy that it would be a cause for delisting. Love to see beautiful old buildings like the Municipal Building and Littlewoods being refurbished and repurposed. Also, nice to see higher density housing development taking place in cities rather than sprawl which gobbles up huge swaths of countryside.

Yes, there are some very positive things happening in Liverpool, despite problems with stalled construction projects. It's a far cry from the 1980s when things were going very badly in Liverpool.

Sure seems to be a lot of high rise student housing going up in the UK in recent years. Almost like a 21st century version of the high rise flats of the 60's and 70's. Hopefully the quality of construction is better.

I think today's construction methods are better than those of the sixties, but there are still problems, for instance, on an apartment building next to the Philharmonic Hall, sections of the 'fake brickwork' fell off and had to be replaced.. One of the most famous construction 'fails' was the Crescents in Manchester built in 1967. By 1971 they were slums due to bad construction and were demolished about 20 years later. I must do a video on that!

That's great to hear. I was interested in architecture and city development even in primary school and did a project on buildings in the Manchester area. For a while I wanted to be an architect, but I had a difficulty with Maths and so I went off the idea. I love buildings old and new but I am especially interested in modern architecture. I think people ought to understand it and appreciate it better. Many thanks for your comments. :)

The voronoi pattern printed onto the exterior glass is very eye-catching and echoes the work of the physicians occupying the top floor. But you could argue it's just a decal designed to brighten up an otherwise not very interesting design. It's just a modernist box - very well designed and built - but it's not the Gherkin or some other innovative/unusual building. Still, I think it's great as it is. I like modernist boxes if they are well executed!

Pell Holdings L & P should be pushing to redevelop the central docks. It's already been 9 years since these plans were proposed. The pace of development in Liverpool is extremely slow. There are too many stalled developments. In the current economic climate I don't expect too much progress as we head towards a recession. Liverpool has potential for growth. Delays in planning and opposition from some Liverpool City councillors has impacted negatively on the city. Liverpool needs to be an ambitious city if it wants to thrive and grow.

Thanks very much for these comments.There are some projects in progress - work has started on the Everton Stadium and on Wirral Waters, others are stuck. The stalled projects I featured in the video are still stalled many months later. I don't know what the solution is but your comments provide food for thought. Many thanks!

There does seem to be a problem in Liverpool. When I recently went around Manchester city centre, I found only one stalled project and that was a project of the Liverpool-based developer Elliot Group. Details of the background can be found by doing a search for 'Elliott Group liquidation investigation' Many thanks!

The two Contractors who I can think of who went bust are Carillion when they were building the Royal Hospital and Buckingham when building the stand extension at Anfield. But both were national Contractors based and building elsewhere. So it's not a unique situation in Liverpool.

So, I spent much of today getting sucked into the tangled web of RU-vid videos and somehow ended up here.....and I am very glad I did. I am from Liverpool originally, moved away when I went to college in 1972. I ended up moving to the USA and didn't look back. Fast forward to 1984 and I returned to Liverpool with my wife to introduce her to my family. We went to the International Garden Festival, and it was a revelation. Suddenly I saw Liverpool in a totally different light - it looked clean, and there was a genuine pride in the city. I finally felt that pride too; it was distinctly lacking while I lived there. And now I have found a treasure trove of information about the architecture and state of the city. Some of the names mentioned were familiar to me due to my trying to make sense of articles in the Liverpool Echo website. I am looking forward to learn about, appreciate and compare Liverpool and its neighbor up the East Lancs Road.

I'm very glad to hear that! I have been fascinated by buildings and local history since I was a child. Liverpool certainly went through some bad times in the past, but since about the mid 80s things have been on the up and up. There are still many social problems. It can be a tough place, but its character is totally unique and the Liverpool waterfront is one of the most impressive and characterful places in the world.

Liverpool is a totally different city than it was 20 years ago when you only had Matthew Street and concert Square for a drink, a few decent restaurants and a couple of hotels and only really st John's market for shopping. Now it's booming. And to think they wanted to flatten the docks and turn it into a giant car park.
@AidanEyewitness
@AidanEyewitness 2 года назад
Yes, definitely, things have improved enormously. I once went on a guided architectural tour of Liverpool with Quentin Hughes (1920-2004) and I'll never forget him saying they planned to tear down and fill in the Albert Dock and replace it with a car park. But we have to thank him as he campaigned to save it and it has since become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. Many thanks for your comment.

Absolute rubbish, Liverpool City centre has always had great places to drink and eat out going back decades!! The concrete soulless jungle the planners have created today will looked back on as a embarrassing eyesore fuelled by corporate greed , without any thought for the local and or indigenous liverpudlians who once graced this proud City Centre!! It's already begun ☹☹☹☹

@@Theoriginalbigbrillo no the Conservative party had completely cut it off from the rest of the country and it was going down hill fast. You are deluded if you think otherwise. Driving up edge lane into the city center looked like something from Beirut. It wasn't vibrant, the docks where an eye soar, it had a market akin to that of a small town shopping centre as its shopping hub and about 5 decent places to eat. Rose tinted glasses are nice to wear though I guess?

I moved from Liverpool over twenty years ago and agree the city is in desperate need of a facelift. However, I feel that a lot of these projects are largely expensive window dressing, haphazard, unco-ordinated and irregularly funded. The centre has already some of Europe's most extraordinarily beautiful buildings but this seems to indicate that the regeneration has no overall plan. Ironically, given that UNESCO has taken the hump, the Liverpool Waters project looks fantastic and seems to showcase how Liverpool was once the 'bridge' between Europe and the USA.
@AidanEyewitness
@AidanEyewitness Год назад
Some very good points here. Construction is certainly haphazard in Liverpool. So many projects have been stalled or abandoned. Still the development overall is positive. The development of the docks is in progress and as you say, celebrates the New York connection, particularly the Lexington tower on Princes Dock. It’s important to come to the city and explore, like I do when I make videos. Many thanks for your comments

@@AidanEyewitness Thanks for the feedback, Aidan. I don't get back there often enough. I worked in around the Liverpool docks for many years and saw many of the changes first hand. It is not so much that its status as a port has been devalued (ie by lack of trade), but in terms of both direct and indirect employment its influence on the citizens has been diminished. It is as though the city is trying to balance its maritime heritage with an uncertain future.

How are local people going to afford some of these apartments? It’s like Manchester build more and more on any bit of spare land. Interesting, well documented/ researched video.
@AidanEyewitness
@AidanEyewitness 3 года назад
Well there was one project that is affordable, Approach Edge Lane, apartments for rent / shared ownership, starting at 450 per month, I think that's a studio. The city centre apartments, like in the Lexington are definitely expensive. How many affordable apartments and houses there will be, I'm not sure. Once interesting place is the Welsh Streets, there are affordable homes there. I must do another feature on it. Many thanks.

It has become a common narrative that the bomb on 96 was somehow responsible for the building boom in Manchester. This is not the case as regeneration and development were well underway well before that event, city centre living (for example) was already growing in popularity. Development has merely accelerated thanks to the infrastructure that was being put in place prior to ‘96.
@AidanEyewitness
@AidanEyewitness 2 года назад
Yes, you are absolutely right. The idea that the IRA did Manchester a favour is absurd. That huge bomb injured over 200 people and could have killed as many if it had gone off earlier by mistake. It was a despicable and pointless act of terrorism and not the reason for regeneration. Many thanks for making this point.

Funny how the single biggest development Everton FC's new stadium at Bramley Moore dock didn't get a mention, ok your drone flew over the site but if your not familiar with the site then you would have no idea, this is recognised as the single largest private sector development project's in the country, contributing an estimated £1.3 billion to the UK economy, you don't support Liverpool FC by any chance?
@AidanEyewitness
@AidanEyewitness 2 года назад
The reason why I didn't cover the new stadium at Bramley Moore dock is because I have already covered it in detail in another video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xfFfNKEFVWk.html . For the 'Building Boom' videos, I feature mainly construction sites that are already in progress or stalled. The Bramley Moore project has not started yet. When I mentioned Liverpool Waters at the end, I just covered what was on the display boards along Jesse Hartley Way. I am interested in the development of Liverpool and the wider NW region and I don't have any affiliation with any football team. Please take a look at the wider context of the videos I have done before jumping to conclusions.

I went to Liverpool as a Beatles fan with high hopes thinking that the negative stereotypes of northern cities was overblown. Unfortunately, I was wrong. It was mostly quite rough and ugly apart from the bits with the old architecture which were mostly beautiful. The old cathedral being a highlight. My girlfriend from Italy was so excited to see the city that the Beatles came from but was very disappointed. Even by the waterfront which is supposed to be a draw for tourists, parts of it were ugly and dilapidated. Such a shame. We much preferred Manchester and Leeds.
@AidanEyewitness
@AidanEyewitness 3 года назад
Well it's important for the decision-makers to know this. If there's a problem, it needs to be dealt with. You are right, there are many dilapidated areas. Liverpool is a rough city, with many run down areas, but that's true of Manchester as well. I will soon be getting to know Leeds better and I hope to produce my first Leeds video soon. Many thanks for your comments, always good to have the feedback.

Islington runs east from the city centre!
@AidanEyewitness
@AidanEyewitness 3 года назад
It runs to the north of the city centre in an east-west direction. I suppose I should have added east-west to make it clear. I wouldn't say it runs east from the city centre. The starting point is at the corner of Commutation Row and 730 metres to the east, at the corner of Moss St, it turns into Erskine Street. www.google.com/maps/@53.4094334,-2.9709877,16z It's part of that main road that is effectively the northern boundary of the city centre. I agree however, 'it runs to the north' is ambiguous, as it sound as if it's like Scotland Road, heading north.. Better would be 'It runs east-west along the northern edge of the city centre'. Many thanks for correcting my English! :)

Why most of the new projects are student accommodations?
@AidanEyewitness
@AidanEyewitness 3 года назад
Because student accommodation is very profitable. You can have lots of students in small rooms with shared kitchens and charge a high rent as electricity and other services are included - I believe you still have to pay for use of the laundry though. Communal rooms, fitness centres mean you can charge more money. More and more students are coming to Liverpool to study. Next to Islington, where many student residences are located, there are three universities within walking distance. Many thanks for your question.
