De man met de belangrijkste technische functie in de Nederlandse voetbalwereld is Nigel de Jong en Gianni Zuiverloon en Edson Braafheid spreken hem in Building Bridges. In zijn functie als technisch directeur van de KNVB is hij allang niet meer de geweldige middenvelder met de snoeiharde tackles die wedstrijden won in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Manchester en Milaan maar de drive die hem bracht tot de WK-finale van 2010 heeft hij nu in zijn functie als directeur.
Zijn pad naar de wereldtop was een lange. Met een zieke moeder die hij zelf verzorgde en een vader die het ook schopte tot international maar er lang niet altijd was. Je hoort hem er niet vaak over maar tegenover Gianni en Edson spreekt hij zich uit over zijn jeugd, de waardering van de buitenwereld en het overwinnen van tegenslagen.
