Welcome to Cabrillo, set in beautiful Northern California! In this episode, we build Cabrillo Union Station, an old government building along a logging right of way converted into a train station. We also plan the first few Cabrillo Bus and Cabrillo Rapid lines.

ABOUT CABRILLO
Watch the whole series here: ru-vid.com/group/PL9sTRDP-J4kByq8Da49GqUJJaLKrsYJS1
Cabrillo is a city set in Northern California with many different influences. A few you might notice are Portland, Oregon, the East Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area, and even Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I'm building my own synthesis. I'm focused on demonstrating and addressing some of the biggest issues facing Californian urban planners and community activists alike: the housing crisis, auto dependency, air pollution, inequality, and climate change, among others. I won’t be painting the picture of a perfect city; Cabrillo will have its share of all of the problems listed above and many more. But it will be on the right track. A democratic force has swept over the city, a force that refuses to settle for half-measures. How will Cabrillans tackle the challenges facing their city and other West Coast cities in the twenty-first century? Watch to find out, and fight for better solutions along the way to make sure your voice is heard.

Love how the scale of this whole project is so on point with how Cities Skylines' scale works.

Incredible series so far. As a local to NorCal I could see myself living somewhere like this. My only thought is the use of palm trees. Both along roads and placed “naturally.” We don’t quite have palm trees like this naturally or even along main avenues in NorCal cities. Correct me if you do notice them like this in NorCal cities, but I feel like this is more of a SoCal trend to plant palm trees like you have here. Again I love the series and thank you so much for how much love and passion you put into your builds. I am such a huge fan of your work!

I think it would make sense for there to be passenger services on a logging railroad, it just depends on how you want it to evolve. The California and Western up in Ft Bragg was a logging line that carried (or carries, I know its a new owner but they still run tourist trains) passengers from Willits to Ft Bragg with a connection to the North Western Pacific RR, that said they did "downgrade" services on the line by utilizing railmotors instead of loco hauled services in the later years. You could have a history for the where this logging line was a kind of suburban passenger service for the area that would connect to your version of the SP in Cabrillo to services to the rest of the state. Service may have been curtailed in the 60's or 70's to be revived by the Caltrans at a later date, or have the service folded into Amtrak upon its inception. Equally you could also have the service mirror the Rock Island services in Illinois and have whatever railroad ran the line continue service well into the Amtrak era, until it was ultimately taken over by Amtrak. Equally the depot could have been the offices for the Logging railroad back in the day, before becoming a city hall like you said, or it could become something akin to the Springfield Union Station where it is redeveloped, or it could even become the headquarters for the Cabrillo Historical Society.

I just love this series so much, and how you integrate politics and urbanism into it. It’s honestly shaping up to be my favorite cities skylines project to date. While you’re almost done with the university area, I just realized that a good city for you to look at would be Madison Wisconsin. While it is Midwestern, it is often considered one of the most bikeable cities in the country, and has a really interesting mix of mid rise infill, older buildings, and nature. The university, and state government also have a massive presence there that has made it incredibly progressive.

I think the buses look great, but when you're going through historic districts like Chinatown, I think it looks pretty weird to have mass transit diesel buses running rather than trolley buses.

ive always wondered why San Fran, a city with limited space but a population of 700K, is having such a massive housing problem, when i live in Tokyo...again, limited space but 13mil living in the city....then i realize that my entire neighborhood is relatively new high rise apartment buildings (mine is midrise but also new-ish, built 2015) and also Japan's got a tendency to demolish and replace buildings every 20-30 years unless the building is something extraordinarily significant

Those Talgo sets though...(Portland Union Station). Also, just a lil' railfan & Historical moment, the Sacramento Union Station is actually a rebuilt ATSF design, While Portland is what I'd just call the Hill Design, because Great Northern (GN), Northern Pacific (NP), Chicago Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q), as well as the Colorado & Spokane & Southern (CS&S) all had the same style, not to mention that all the railroads mentioned where merged into Burlington Northern, Now Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF). And for context, what commodity was on or is on the railroad does not make it that. Most lines in Cali today are actually passenger/freight rail based, from back when logs, ties & animals where on the same train as people. As for the building (Union Station), Im gonna say Later Southern Pacific Style, meaning that that building was built either a few years before, or after World War 2. Any Long Distance Passenger through there? Or even a regional (not local CMTA, or Amtrak California) Medium Distance train? As for your Rapid Bus, let's take a trip over to one of the more famous MTA's that have designated bus roads, or roads where the buses are like light rail, but guided by guard rail, or rollers to prevent damage.

@tlowthion4

I'd say the station is totally right - in the past, rail operators would have had both freight and passenger service running on the same routes. Passenger lines were often run for very low profit or even at a loss as a promotion for the money-making freight side (hence all the luxury named services in the US). Its only since the rise of automobiles that passenger services became super-unprofitable, and that's why things like Amtrak came into being, with only profitable or city-subsidized commuter lines remaining in private operation. The fact the station looks like it once had more platforms, but has been scaled down to two tracks is common as well (a newer building over the old platforms). And many cities in the US are renovating old stations that may have been shut down, as major parts of new urban development hubs - I think Denver is one (City Beautiful did a video on it ) and that has total Cabrillo Vibes

Two things. Despite housing crises replacing shops, even a bodega, leaves a hole in the community. I have lived in 3 cities that have had this. Rhosneigr, Birmingham, and Chester (the latter being a student population) all have had lively parts of the city silenced because a community hub becomes silent housing. Its also unprofitable for local councils. Taxes and ground rent is superior to council/local taxes. Secondly, wise planning sees new housing on the same land area. Even if the journey downtown is halved by being just over a river/bridge than being further up the same landmass, people still won't journey as they see the river or a mountain or farmland as a barrier regardless of tunnels, bridges, or a highway (the latter cutting in two many, many cities and trashing communities). I'm loving the series! I'm a retired cartographer to justify my view.

6:30 If it's more realistic then it would be Wells Fargo or Bank of America, but it may be interesting to make it HSBC, it would be less realistic, but since it's West Coast it could add some interesting back story to the city as a hub of US - Asian commerce
@shlubbers1778
@shlubbers1778 3 года назад
This was a good one as usual, but consider removing that bus stop right before the bridge. It doesn’t look like that one would be realistic, as the planners would know that could create some problems.

Will there be a Cabrillo airport?
@jonathanroutledge5610
@jonathanroutledge5610 3 года назад
A fun detail might be having a small airport that became too small to accommodate the needs of a city/region this size. Maybe now it is slowly being redeveloped into housing, with a larger hub airport just off the map servicing the wider region like Sea-Tac. This could be a nice workaround for the fact that an airport proportional to the size of Cabrillo would be massive on the map.
