I know it's your car and i appreciate the creativity to make something custom, but i think you should've kept the firewall and the aprons looking as factory as possible, even if that means modifying OEM sheet metal, that would result in a better look and will be easier to install A/C down the line if you want, some companies sell bolt on modern A/C kits that use factory mounting points, if you modify the firewall too much you won't be able to use that, just my 2 cents...

So much for keeping it kinda stock. Should have put a good motor in it and keep that coyote motor for another build. The horse your gonna end up with the only thing your keeping is some body. @RecklessRegal
@RecklessRegal 2 года назад
@@raymondtuckerjr1886 Overall it's just a lack of experience/knowledge in custom fabrication. For example, the firewall is 16 gauge and three pieces but welded together. 16 gauge isn't particularly strong in that orientation so that firewall is going to move and flex especially when a brake booster is mounted to it, which is going to put a lot of stress on those welds and cause them to crack. It should have some sort of third dimension to it, be it dimple dies or bead rolling or something similar to add strength. I also would have made it in one piece and bent it up in a brake rather than 3 pieces welded together. Lots of little things like this that will be problems later.

Those flat panels are likely to make popping sounds when you drive over bumps and make turns, etc. The factory makes indentations in the firewalls to prevent this and also to add strength. Same principle also applies to ductwork in buildings - the X bends in the panels adds strength and prevents them from making the popping noises. I believe that I would have just modified the stock firewall.

A lot of the bead rollers were old, but they worked great and are more affordable than new stuff. Plus... if you own a metal lathe or have access to a machine shop, you can create new dies to fit your needs. A little box and pan break and a roller would meet all of you fabrication needs. Look for old stuff on equipment auctions and you can save some cash.

One small suggestion for planning ahead type thinking. Those 2 x 4 box pieces you put in first from frame to rocker could have been welded in at the same angle as the new toe board you bent up. Then it would have given the strength you wanted, provided another place to weld and support the new sheet metal and likely also provided a good place to weld in future roll cage front dash bars. Also would have recommended cutting the trans tunnel opening in the firewall before welding it into the car. It would have much easier to cut a nice semi-circle outside the car and on a flat table.

Yeah, that 2x4 piece of steel he welded from the frame to the body was unnecessary. If it ever gets hit there now the frame is bent. If it needed extra strength there the Ford engineers would have put it there.
@speedsterwinston
@speedsterwinston 2 года назад
The previous video he boxed in a part of the subframe bracket effectively losing all access to the nuts He said he welded the nuts in but those type of fabrication are meaningless at this point of a build. He’s doing it for asthetics but it’s just a waste of time. Kind of like throwing your car keys on the car seat, pressing down the lock button, and then slamming the door.

@@AdamSNook. those frame rails also had support added by the inner fenders, now they are gone and he's welding crap in thinking he's some kind of master fabricator. It is a unibody car, not body on frame car so the chassis rails aren't as strong laterally or vertically with components removed. He also says "the firewall is pretty much done" but there are huge gaps, no trans tunnel, he hasn't even tried to test fit steering, transmission, brake booster, suspension, headers, wiring, etc. The firewall has barely been started at this stage in the grand scheme of things. I am picking he just wants views on his channel so does things like this without thinking ahead.

This series and the car started off terrific. I am starting to get that sinking feeling now though. It has gone way off-script, and things are being done without much thought to the next stages. I really hope that he listens this time, and stops to think things through before that special car is beyond redemption. That 'firewall' may be of a slightly thicker material, but I can assure you it is weaker than even the compromised original one was. Your will flex, buckle and vibrate like crazy, and will become a detriment to your safety. A thin piece of contoured and shaped material is stronger, way stronger than flat expanses of material you have got. It is basic physics. Come on Ben, please don't ruin this car. Remember what you said when you first got it, then compare it to what you are butchering together now. It is not too late (yet) to get back on track to end up with a good, safe car that you can be proud of. If things carry on as they are, I will be unsubscribing, as I cannot bear to watch what is basically desecration.
