This challenge was way to easy. I need more ideas for some hard ones. I have about three in mind, but need more.. Let me know a fire challenge you would like to see. Let's get it done before the fire ban comes back. :p

WooHoooooo! The fire ban is off! Great idea with the divided fire pit so you can compare materials and burn time. Can't wait to see the girls work on fire building technique!

It has been great.. A big feature to the property. I hope the Fire Ban stays off.. we need more rain.

Great idea with the metal pan. In wintertime I make a small fire on a cookie sheet which sits in the snow. Love to cook on the fire as much as I can!

Very good video.. Going back to a question you were asked , what is your dream vacation.. Backpacking around the ruins of MP .. That would also be my choice of a place to go.. I own two books and two DVD on the subject and history of MP.. Mystery still remains about the site true purpose.. Most fascinating of several is it was built before the wheel and iron tools.. Finest fitting of stones that weigh tons, perfect seams, that's art and super skills..

Hey, good job on the fires. Yours took off like a... well... a house a-fire. I was confident yours would go the whole minute, but surprised it lasted as long as it did with the paucity of sticks, but good on you. As for a more challenging fire competition ? Well, having a fire is nice, but USING one is better. I'd suggest to build a fire that can boil a cup of water for a cup-a-soup and a s'more. No time limits, just get a meal and dessert. First one gets both desserts. That'd be good for you's adults, but it'd be kinda punitive for your cubs. Maybe winner doesn't have to wash the the dishes ? Another idea is to make two fires using two different methods in say... 30 minutes ? It'd build confidence up in making fires in an emergency. Lots of methods: matches, fire steel, bow drill, two 9-volt batteries and steel wool, a magnifying glass, with the goals above, because you want to be confident that you can create a fire for survival reasons. Come to think of it though, bow drill would probably need over 40 minutes and be tough for the kids and magnifying glass would be dangerous because you need a very bright and no doubtedly dry day. Oh, and the cubs have to use methods that they have in their own packs only, so that they are confident that they have packed the right stuff for their survival.

I like your diversified thought process Paul. You forgot one of the tough ones. Using the convex lens from a flashlight. If you can master that technique, it just makes you want to pat yourself on the shoulder. That is not much of a reward though. Ice cream and pizza is the ultimate reward! Hehe! Using char cloth is considered cheating( just in this scenario but not in real life) In real life, char cloth is just being a smart camper. Stay real brother and keep the creative ideas flowing. It just makes life more interesting.

Paul.. love the ideas. One of my girls fire challenges (you will see next week) is them boiling water over fire. Since all the Fire Bans we haven't all summer been able to make fire.. so this is so exciting for them. But I like some of these challenges for me... always looking for new challenges. I have three I want to try and will be adding some more from your comment. Thanks!!
@paulwalsh2344
@paulwalsh2344 7 лет назад
Casey1pj does the convex lens magnify the light or is it the convex mirror inside that focuses the light. Would you be able to use this without breaking your flashlight ? If so, I like to see that technique.
@paulwalsh2344
@paulwalsh2344 7 лет назад
Hey Spirit Forest, I noticed almost immediately after posting my comment a video of yours where you made 3 different fires in a row so my suggestion is irrelevant. And I admit I didn't notice in the first run through watching your video and your description that your cubs were going to be doing practically exactly what i suggested, so don't mind me. Just keep doing what you're doing cause we love it !
@Casey1pj
@Casey1pj 7 лет назад
Hay Paul, The mirror is what you use. Take it out of the cover so the glass is out of the way. Then you remove the bulb. Place the char cloth where the bulb was.Then just adjust the mirror direction until it condenses the light onto the cloth. You need good sunlight though. It's not as simple as a magnifying glass. The first time I saw someone do it, I couldn't believe it. I've done it with char cloth but I think that it might work with toilet paper or even a Q-Tip. My curiosity makes me want to go outside and try but nothing but clouds from that hurricane in Texas. The Flashlight that I used was a cheep incandescent light with the round bulb. It uses two D-cell batteries to operate. They make them so that you can take them apart to change the bulb when it goes bad. If you have some sunny weather and test it with the T.P or the Q-Tip please let me know if they work. It didn't take but a minute to ignite the char cloth.

I was watching this video again and I think that you and Todd Need something much harder. Make feather stick torches. 5 minutes to find the right stick. No time limit on the feathering because it's not smart to be in a hurry with knives. You have to use sparks to ignite them. No tinder or matches allowed. Whoever keeps it burning the longest is the winner. Keep in mind that sappy wood will ignite easier but also burns faster.
@SpiritForest
@SpiritForest 7 лет назад
Hmm.. I like that. And right.. don't want to be in a hurry when you have a knife in hand. Todd is pretty good with the fire rod (he gets more sparks than me).. so a good competition for sure.

Here's a challenge, make a fire with NO firestarter, using only one match :-) Took me a lot of practice when I was younger but I am now the king of the one match fire :-) Thats an awesome skill to teach the girls!
@SpiritForest
@SpiritForest 7 лет назад
cool... thanks for your comment Billy. Can you define "firestarter?" That way I fully understand what you are saying.
@BillyBlaze7
@BillyBlaze7 7 лет назад
stuff like "wet tinder", cotton balls soaked in vasoline, fat wood, magnesium etc. I see after watching the full video you did just that lol I believe had you intended the fire to burn longer you could have easily done that. It really looks dry! Can't wait to see the girls give it a shot :-) Keep the vids coming :-)

Thanks for sharing great video awesome beer story😁 quick question about your fire restriction does that include a contained fire? Such as a fire in the pit you created?
@SpiritForest
@SpiritForest 7 лет назад
Fire bans include all open fires. $2,000 fine if you make a fire. They are really serious about it. I am always very careful with my fires (more than others). When I backpack, I rarely build a fire.. probably only have done it 3 times in my life while backpacking. Thanks for watching Yankee.

I was watching the Colorado Emergency Management broadcast a few days ago and they wouldn't even allow SMOKING! I happen to be a walking Chimney! I don't think I could afford the fines I would get every time I lit up a cigarette. I do understand why they are so stringent. Since March, they have had around 12 or more monster fires that have burned thousands of acres of land. They have had to import help in putting them out. Some of the fires are still burning now. However, I did notice that all the fires were in the rolling plains and the flat lands. I didn't see any fires in the mountainous areas. I mean (HAHaaaa..) You guys don't need to practice how to start a fire. Just take a hike down hill and you will have all the fire you want. I probably shouldn't have said that because a lot of people have been suffering losses do to those fires. My brain just has a coping mechanism that causes me to create humor in diverse situations. I'm just glad that you guys can finally have some fun with fire. I'm dying to see the competition.
@YankeesOutdoorAdventures

That doesn't really answer my question about a contained fire though, smoking is not considered contained because you're walking around with a cigarette,.... let me ask like this so maybe you will understand a little better,..... are you allowed to BBQ a hamburger in a no fire zone? Or when burn regulations are in order? If so this is where the law gets a little crazy because what's the difference between a barbecue grill that stands on legs or a barbecue grill that sits on the ground? And if the fire is contained and there's a grill over the top of it is it now a legal fire pit? Thank you very much for answering the question although it went a little bit off-topic from what I was looking for for an answer😁 have a great day and until our Trails meet again I hope all your adventures are awesome👍

It's complicated Yankee. I will give you this link and you can see just how complicated it gets. After you view the general statutes, you have to go to each county to find out what is and is not allowed. There is like 5 levels of alert. Low,Medium,Hi and believe it or not there are two levels above that. The news video that I watched the other day was allowing approved barbecue grills only. No Smoking and several other restrictions. If you want to learn how the Colorado government thinks, go to this link and you will figure out the constantly changing regulations. Trust me when I say that it is a bureaucratic nightmare. I hope this helps you understand the reason that Spirit is weary of striking a match when they have these bans.Here is the link to the Colorado emergency management site. www.coemergency.com/ It has a list of the counties and what ban conditions are currently under way. You would probably have to contact the county commissioners office to find out if a particular item is allowed at any given time. I hope this helps brother. Your friend Casey

Casey1pj thank you very much for taking your time to leave a link and help educate me on one of the many states that are quite confusing😲 I have in the past carried a Apache Grill strap to my backpack to stay within guidelines of law, although that tactic doesn't work in every situation. Thanks again it was a pleasure meeting you👍

Nice Shirt Todd. Where you get it? :) For Fire challenge- Self feeding small cooking fire to boil water twice. Once started can not add any fuel by hand, must let fire feed itself. P.S. Cannot wait for my shirts to arrive so I can be as stylin as Todd. :)

In a strange way I was trying to get more sold for you and fundraising. LOL I have two on order :) I figured on two boilings, one for drinking water, and one for cooking as one would need in the bush. BTW. How long is the growing season at that altitude? Soil looks good for a vegi garden. Another challenge to grow food in the wild, if you can keep it away from the wildlings.

Aren't you so nice.. and I took the bait. I knew you got one. ;) It is getting in the low 40's and high 30's at night. Since I am not there all the time, no growing for me. However, I have put down some wildflowers and I do see some of them up. I also see some wild strawberries and mushrooms. Thought about planting more strawberries, but don't want to attract bears. A bear was in the area just last week. (I didn't get a picture of him on my trail cam, bummer.)

Hi Spirit, I have wild raspberries that grow in the ditches near my house. Yumm Yumm Yum. I don't even bother to wash the bugs out. I just eat them straight from the vine. I've never gotten sick and I have never tasted any bugs. I'm just there with nature and enjoying my feast. (Side Note) Grinning from ear to ear the whole time.
