On one of my jobs, we had to build a pole barn using magnetized 3" drill stem. Took me forever to figure out how to weld it. I finally found an old welder that gave me the answer. he said to wrap the ground cable around the post a few times I was welding, and it should do the trick, and it worked great, never had another problem welding magnetizes pipe.

We do the same and had good luck giving the ground cable a few wraps around the pipe when encountering " ark blow / wander " . Solved the problem .

The fence looks real good. Neat work as always by you. I might offer one hint, leave the stretcher on the wire when you line up the steel posts, then move that wire to the top. Stretch each additional wire starting from the top and work down. That way you don’t have the existing wires interfering with the new wire as it’s being stretched up each time.

I've built miles of fence over the years. I've never done corners or stretch poles that way, I'd always drive 2 uprights 10' apart then a 3rd pipe 11' out and that one would be 18" out of the ground. I would use 1 cross pipe. All my uprights are driven 5' in the ground and I'd drive my t posts too with a hydraulic driver. On magnetized pipe, if you wrap your lead around the pipe a few times that would help. Your fence looks good and it's what I'd call a 50 year fence but you put more effort in to make it look good. I've done a 1/2 mile straight line in 1 day with 1 other person tied and all. Time is money. Again, good looking fence.

Austin, have watched a few of your videos. I owned a somewhat specialized welding company for 30 years and though I'm not much of a welder myself I've had many bad welders and a few really good welders work for me. What I like about your work is the pride you take in your projects. Not a complete 100% accurate statement as in one case in particular it was wrong but I could usually tell how a man would work and care about the work was how his rig was equipped and how it looked when he showed up. I've always wanted the quality of the work to be as if I was doing it form myself to last way beyond my time here. Impressed with what and how you do it with so much attention to the simple details that add to the quality and look of your work. Closing down after my 30 years of doing but would have been proud to have had you working with us.

I know it made sense to weld the cable keepers on to tie the barbed wire to since you had to tie the net to the same post, but I wouldn't make it a habit. In my opinion that is the weak spot in the fence.
@angusncmo3268
@angusncmo3268 2 года назад
agreed .... wrapping the wire 'around' the pipe would prevent all the pull being put on a sharp 180 degree bend in the wire (which always weakens wire).
@shortfuse43
@shortfuse43 2 года назад
I like your method of the circle cut-outs better than coping the ends. You don't have to worry about a "precise" length measurement for the cope, getting a large gap and needing something to hold the unwelded end; just cut the horizontal a little bit long and jamb that puppy in the holes and weld 'er up.

Been building fence few years and learned how to tie wire off to post or the clips like you got here, and the old timer I learned from showed me his way, and it looks a lot like the way you’ve tied it off here. Spring like end look at the clip. Great work bud, always a pleasure to watch!

If you want braces to not pull, it's best to use three pipes in the ground. And 10 ft between each pipe. Wire was stretched backwards. After the t-posts are in, take the bottom wire and move it to the top. Level all the t-posts, then stretch the remaining wires top to bottom.

I like saddling the horizontal pipes. Vice-Grip chain clamp around both post to hold the saddled pipe in place allows me to adjust it up or down if needed to make it look right. Don’t get to work on level ground too much and always trying to make things “flow” with the ground. Thanks for the video.
@stanwooddave9758

Vice-Grip chain clamp also makes a GREAT GROUNDING CLAMP. Just passing that on for the newbies. I do work with 1.5 in. pipe (2" in. O.D.) using saddling / Cop(e}ing method for hand railing.

added tip to keep bulls in that tend to jump a five wire fence is to weld a 2 foot piece of 3/8 rebar (Hot wire fence post) to the tops of the T-post and run 2 lines of hotwire ABOVE the existing 5 wire fence. With that extra two rungs of hot-wire, bulls think twice about jumpin fences. IF you still get bulls that get out, another post hanging out horizontally from middle of T-post, about waist hi, with another line will do the trick. This keeps the bulls from ever even getting close enough to the fence to jump it. Another remedy is take that damn Bull to the sale and get rid of him........

Thank you. I had no idea that having pipe stuck in the earth can cause problems of magnetism on the pipe and cause the area your trying to weld have arc blow. Yes I learned of this way back in school of how changing the magnetic field can cause the flame of a arc to move. Simple stuff to know how to mitigate this problem working in the field. Thanks again. great video. 👍

The fence job looks real good. Neat work as always by you. I might offer one hint, stretch the wires from top to bottom. You can still use the wire on the bottom to line up steel posts by just leaving the stretcher on then move it up to the top. If you do the top first and work down you don’t have the wires getting hung as you are pulling them. I always use 3 posts for corners, but that’s just my design preference since I think the additional brace post is at least as strong as going deeper with 2 posts. Bottom line is that if it holds it’s good.👍

Saddling is a lot faster if you cut 6" saddles from 2-7/8 pipe at your shop, then use 2-3/8 pipe for the cross bar. Or use any pipe combination where one slips inside the other. There is a bit more welding but fitting things together is much easier.

A Trick I've always used to find center when using fractions is to keep the top number and double the bottom. Eg. 7/8. Becomes 7/16 which is half. If the whole number is even just half it. If the whole number is odd, add one half inch to your now halfed fraction. 2-7/8 = 1-7/16. 3-7/8 = 1-7/16 + 8/16 (1/2) or 1-15/16 that 1/2" comes from the extra whole number when its not even. Always helped me, especially when dealing with funky fractions and lots of them. Yall have a good one!

Not sure if you've ever pondered the idea.. But have you ever thought of doing a Patreon account? I've never seen any welder have one, but I have seen them for motocross where people will send in videos for critique and it's literally a few dollars a month the individual pays. I think it'd be a great way to connect with the community, offer real life feed back, and build your company. With the large following I feel it'd be quite successful. Y'all do offer your classes but it's just a thought! Thanks

Christmas bells are a great present. Everyone seems to want them. I use a 3/4" pipe 2" long. I flare out the one end and put a stem with a ball in the other end then swage it down tight. I am just starting this video sbd not sure what your aboit to say but I akways wrap my ground lead a few wraps and something an old school pipe welder taught me, and I’m not sure why it works. But sometimes you can smack the piece of steel that’s magnetic with a small beater to make it ring, 99 percent of the time it fixes the magnetic problem I’m having. The wrapped negative lead helps but after smacking the piece ot wioo cure it

This Christmas it will be Blue Christmas. Jingle Bells is not a Christmas song. Nowhere does it say Christmas. It is one of my favorite winter songs. What is the horse's name in Jingle Bells? Do you fill your post with anything or just cap them? I got a job building a Santa Sleigh. He was so impressed he had me make what seemed like a billion bells. It was a life-size sleigh so Santa could in it and take pictures. I made him sign on the bill not to be used as a sleigh. it was just for pictures. That was about 30 years ago and he has been pulling behind his horse and sometimes behind a snowmobile. It was all made of mild steel and going strong. Merry Christmas.

Cut a pipe and weld a cap or a t in a saddle the height the t post should be. Use that to drive the t posts to your bottom strand. This will make all your t posts the same height. Question, why did you put up a 2 bar brace and 5 strands of wire? Won't animals get through? Also kickers on your brace would allow to actually get your wire tight, come summer it's going to stretch. The holes versus saddling looks WAY better!

Nice work Austin, I’m curious of your thoughts on pricing your fence jobs, I’m in oregon and 2 7-8 are 98 per joint I just bid a 900’ fence and it works out to be about 25 bucks a foot? Complete labor and material? It’s a 5’ fence, one top rail and one coped rail a foot lower, post spacing at 10’ , pipe alone is $8300.00, plus trucking,48” no climb wire is $2000 , digging holes and cement, it would be a super good fence but I’m thinking he won’t go with it at that price? And I feel I’ve already cut my labor as much as I can. Anyway good to see you still making videos , I remember back when you where pipelining.

Please don't take this commen as being critical of the way you do things. You do very nice clean work. I'm only trying to help you by sharing my experience in building fence. I could tell by the way the previous fence was layed over that it's a flood zone, and judging by your use of the 10' t-post that the fence washes out after heavy rains. It's my experience that a deeper t-post won't really help because it's the flimsy part above the ground that gives way. In that situation putting in a 2 7/8" post in place of every other, or every 2nd t-post will hold it up. It also helps to put the wire on the downstream side of the fence where the water can rip it off of the post without taking your post with it.

I am curious as to why you left the rig so far away from where you were working I thought if it was closer you wouldn’t have to have as much leads out for the welding gear and if you needed something from the truck you’re not walking back and forward as much. Now I did consider it was in between the two jobs at the halfway mark but what’s the stop you doing one job packing up your gear and then driving down to the other job.
