Ah, the captivating realm of boat building, where all the magic happens. Or so we are learning. The biggest advantage to being here for the last stage of our boat build is getting to see all the guts, how it all comes together and learning from the pros. We have been spending A LOT of time with the HH crew and diving into the nitty-gritty details that make these floating marvels worthy of sailing the world’s oceans.
And this week, we take a peek into the heart and soul of boat construction, where every minuscule detail counts and the devil himself hangs out. From design tolerances to why epoxy is superior, we're pulling back the curtain on the wizardry that goes into building our HH44 and all these vessels.
Getting unfettered access to the HH factory, the people, and the process has been invaluable. This is obviously a highly talented crew and every step of the process is carefully thought out. From the materials they choose to the intricate electrical systems, it's clear that attention to detail is their secret sauce. Which gives us a ton of confidence in our boat for when the time comes to set sail. Because Ricardo is right, something will inevitably fail. And when it does, we will know exactly where it is and how to get to it. Fixing it will be another beast all together, but that's future us problems. For now, we're soaking up all the knowledge we can and enjoying this part of the journey.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

I appreciate that he says stuff isn't going to fail. The crazy part about Carbon Fiber itself is that it doesn't degrade in UV exposure, so it's absolutely permanent. Now the epoxy resin can breakdown over time in UV, but when you use the absolute minimum of it, there's not much of it to break down, and then if you paint it, you've got something that's not going to fail pretty much ever, as long as you aren't abrading it down with a line thousands of times.
@berndog3

Yes, but don't forget that CRP, just like GRP, is a two part system. The carbon provides the strength in tension and the epoxy provides the strength in compression. You need both.

Yep, and vacuum infusion is one of the best ways to get the best fiber/resin ratio for the best strength and weight. A protective coating is a must and a UV resistant clear top coat isn't enough, especially in a marine environment and it's exterior, it will get brittle over time. Paint or vinyl wrap are great protective layers.

What a 💩-y topic! 😜 There have been a lot of inquiries about whether or not composting heads are going in, so I'll add your question to the folder. Thanks for the feedback! Curious Minion

As an avid sailor who has built a 40' cat 15 years ago--the technology and systems are mind blowing (and clearly expensive). I do have 'wiring envy'-- mine was nothing like that. I'm really interested in why mini keels and not daggerboards-- Every cat I have had has had daggerboards and a month ago in 40 knots hard on the nose in my 35' cat, I was deeply grateful for them getting us into port (we only have a 20hp outboard) that was not going to push us into 40 knots and big seas. You said you wanted suggestions on what content to bring to all of us fans, well can you go into some depth on your choice of sails and the rigging. Also you were going to go into depth on the eco drive and the engines. And what dingy did you guys settle on, and has it arrived yet? Just a few suggestions. Thanks. And of course the progress of the build. Is it just me or when you guys were showing the boat, it looks really big. Thanks.

This really shows the quality of HH just seeing the inner hull up against a Lagoon is night and day difference. You’re going to have one wild top notch machine, can't wait to see more of the build.

That's the most beautiful wiring I've ever seen! How about more on the hybrid drive? Thank you so much!

I knew I liked the electrical guy but when he said, "It is all about balance, you can't always have it your way." Not sure I even have words to say how amazing that statement was. Reminds me of a Moody Blues album.... 'A question of balance' , thinking they may have been way before their time. You guys are going to have a great boat......

That Color is absolutely stunning. My favorite. I was wondering if you can do a video of how you decided what the interior decor will look like and of you were able to have input on that. Thanks for the great videos 😊
