It's an extremely under rated wood in my opinion.

Have you ever had problems with the pocket screws splitting the hickory? Some people say hard hardwoods can be troublesome….

Hickory is extremely hard. I often will add some paste wax to the screws just to help. To be honest I'm not sure it's entirely nessicary but I have not seen much splitting when I do this. Maybe something to try if you are having trouble.

I cut several extra pieces just because it’s unavoidable. You have to be very careful if you’re using an impact driver, it will drive really hard and split the wood. Listen for subtle changes in the pitch of the motor noise.
