I've enjoyed all of your video's. It is nice to see someone who enjoys what they are doing and is willing to share it. Looking forward to future video's. Thank you.
Thanks so much for documenting this, Freddy. It must be a pain for you and add lots of time but in loving every minute haha. I've learned so much from you over the years.
Oh man ! Thank you forst for actually showing the spraying.. too many vids out here showing the result without the process. And #2... I love you're using the LPH80, same gun I have and love it! Even if I had to pay for mine!
This LP built is among the really great ones. Full of nice technics, and with a most satisfying result, as far as I can see. I almost got Michael Greenfield-vibes along the way, a fellow countryman, if I`m not mistaken. Thankyou, mr Frets!
Awesome treatise on how to REALLY do a Gibson Sunburst Finish. Pretty much everyone else on RU-vid uses dye stain on the top to get the PRS/modern high-end Gibson look, which I personally can't stand. This video has finally given me the courage to refinish mine....an LP Tribute with a significant amount of figuring on the top, totally hidden by Gibson's "faded satin" finish....which consists of a couple of coats of tinted sanding sealer and maybe a few coats of unbuffed satin nitro. I have lots of experience with staining/finishing/refinishing furniture and other stuff, very little with guitars, zero with maple tops. Love the entire series. I'd love to try it from scratch but definitely don't have the skills. Probably will eventually try a kit.
Love the way you do. What do you think is best, stain the body cap first, or apply a sealer, clear coats and after that tinted lacquer yellow or amber. I'm in this step of the process and have this doudt, taking into account that I'm planning a faux binding. Thanks in advance!!!
Love it, and would like to hear them and see what hardware choices are made. I think all your builds would have an eager audience if they had the depth of the Les Paul series. Beautiful work, as always.
Great videos and beautiful guitars! Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but how long did you need to leave the clear lacquer in the sun to achieve the amber color you wanted?
Hi, I was wondering, did you scuff sand between each coat of clear before you applied the color coats? Also, what type of clear coat are you using? Thank you in advance and great series.
hey Freddy, I'm about to grain fill my les paul, and I want to achieve the same color on the back as these lp's. When you filled the grain did you add any dye to the filler? and after it dried did you sand it? because when you started spraying the color was exactly the same as the filler. Sorry for all the questions again lol. but happy new year :)
Hi Slash! Yes I added dye to the filler. Mostly red, a bit of brown. I did not record my exact formula....just kept adjusting it until it looked right. I only sanded the filler very minimally....only to knock off a high blob etc. Happy New Year! Thanks for watching :)
Some much great detailed content. So what’s your compressor setup? Or what would u recommend to get similar results? The lacquer laid down so smoothly. Your spray setup seems ideal. I feel like my cheap Earlex 5500 isn’t adjustable enough, u can’t adjust the airflow. Plus I the air gets too warm directly from the fan and is prematurely drying the finish, giving me way too much orange peel especially w waterborne finishing products.
It's just a regular old 4 hp compressor. It's the gun that's responsible for the finish quality. It did take some getting used to though. You have to get the paint viscosity right and air pressure and how close to the work you position the gun and how fast you move it.
I've enjoyed all of these videos so much. Amazing work. I plan to try this sometime in the future. I'd love to know how the headstocks were done. Just tape over the inlay and then spray it black?
Thanks Lee. I have tried different methods. One was to use clear tape over the inlay and cut out the outline. But the better method for me is to use another inlay ( I had them CNC machined so they are exactly the same) and lightly tack glue it right on top of the actual inlay before spraying the black. Afterwards there is very minimal clean up....just scraping a little bit off bleed here and there.
Freddie, how do you like the Piano Lacquer? I have been using Sherwin Williams low voc lacquer but its getting harder to get from my local store. I'm looking for an alternative lacquer now.
Wow. I never would have guessed that the dye would fade so quickly. How much time was the guitar actually in the sun to get that much fading? I would have thought for that amount of fading it would need 30-60 hours of uv/sun. Is part of the reason for it fading so rapidly due too how fresh/new the finish was ?
OK, I have been searching and following your episodes and got to number 10 and now here in 11. In between the 2, I was hoping to see how you locate and drill the holes for the tailpieces and bridges. However, it appears the holes were done without cam demonstration when the build turns to the application of finishes to the body etc. Did I miss this process or is it found elsewhere like in a reverse time lapsed revisit to the process? Thanks for presenting this high quality work so far.
Good Morning. Thank you so much for these amazing videos. Here in Brazil, there is a product to fill pores equivalent to the one you use, but as you mixed other products to get the mixture, I ask you if possible, that you help me by saying what products you mixed and their proportions, to obtain the mixture that you use. Thanks.
Большое спасибо Freddy! Твои видео очень полезны. Я с нетерпением жду возможности послушать как будет играть эта прекрасная гитара. Желаю тебе удачи. Большой привет из России!
That pebbly part that 'is the burst'. Is that basically overspray that can be easily wiped off with a dry cloth? I have a ton of overspray after spraying my first burst and am scared to wipe of the loose iversoray from the body. Help!
congratulations for the excellent realization! Can I ask you a question? can nitro or polyurethane paints damage plastic bindings? thanks in advance for your reply
G’day Freddy, just wondering which LPH80 did they send you? There are few types with different sized nozzles and fan spread .... thinking of getting one myself :)
Beautiful guitars! I've seen where some other builders will stain the maple top black and then sand it all back down. They say that it makes the figuring stand out more prominently. I notice that you don't do that. Do you think that's a bad technique?
Freddie. I'm getting good results with the Piano Lacquer and Reducer 2255 and mix ratios you recommended. But I need to up my game with my spray gun. Do you still prefer the Iwata LPH-80 or have you moved to something different? Is it a good spray gun if you only have one spray gun for guitars, sanding sealer, base coats, sunbursts and clear? You don't find it a little too small?
Hey John, It's my favorite gun. No, not too small. The only time I don't use it is if I'm spraying something really heavy like a non lacquer primer or sealer.
I got 2 questions if you don't mind :) 1. Did you use any sanding sealer? 2. I'm doing a gold top finish next week. How long should I let the gold finish dry before scraping the binding. And should I spray 1 or 2 clear coats on the gold finish before scraping?
