It has the extra turn that the destroyer needs. Or more like the turn I can’t get the destroyer to do. Firestorm helps with the flex giving me the shape and distance that a destroyer can’t quite do.
My Champion Groove came in real handy recently when I needed to use a disc to knock down my Teebird out of a tree. I also still use it for overhead utility shots.
Now comes the most exciting part, taking that bag out to the course and seeing if it really does everything you need. Like you said, learning the difference between a streak of good or bad shots and a discs true performance takes time. I look forward to seeing how your bag develops from here
I also bag several Wraiths and I too was pleasantly surprised by the Firestorm! With the exception of a Berg, I only bag Innova. This series was a ton of fun to watch. Learned a bunch and had fun rooting for the discs in my bag.
I agree, my halo tern new had a little turn and a good amount of fade very similar to a stock s-line destroyer, beat in the halo tern became a longer seasoned champion wraith. That is because it can be powered up to turnover and hold/ glide for most of its flight with a little stability towards the end for a max distance shot with just enough stability to have consistent grouping. Also my yellow GG wraith is ridiculously OS. It has a huge heartbeat dome and behaves like a slightly slower beefy destroyer
Awesome, this morning before work I had to search for this video cause I thought RU-vid let me down. But now at break, it was my top suggestion:) thanks Robbie! Nothing like mentally imagining building your bag when your at work wishing I was at the course.
@@RobbieCDiscgolf yeah thanks man. This series made me rethink how I built my bag. I used to just have the straight, understable, and overstable slots covered, but adding those 2 slots in-between like slightly understable and straight with consistent finish really helped my game a lot! It makes it so I don't have to change my release angles as much to shape shots. So I really just need to focus on my desired release angle, and let the disc do the work. Kinda ironic cause I simplified my game by addition and not subtraction haha. Thanks man! Congrats again on the sponsorship! That's the goal!
Here I am, 1:36 am in Tennessee... stopping off for the night headed to south Carolina for work. Do I have 2 bags and a cart of discs? Yes I do. Am I glad I found this video? Yes sir I am. Gonna watch and crash out. Last 400 miles tommorow!!
The Wraith is my all time favorite disc! I've been moving away from Innova discs to try some other brands (you could only get Innova around here when I first started playing years ago) but it's unlikely that the Wraith will ever leave my bag!
Soon as I started looking into other brands like, Dynamic Discs and found the Warden; the only Innova disc I bought since then was another Star Destroyer. Yes, I do love my Wraith!!!
Love my two wraiths! A 168g Star wraith that, with my noodle arm, will reliably fly straight and fade out at the end - and a 175g Dx wraith that I use for hyzer flips. So much fun to see it flip up and fly straight for so long, then turn right and fade left!
personally a huge fan of the Mamba in champion plastic. don't be scared away by the -5, it's not a "roller only" disc as the number would suggest. it's a great touch distance driver and you can make some amazing and unique shot shapes by utilizing speed controll and angle control, and it feels great in the hand. I also consider the Xcaliber an essential distance driver. It is the most reliable hyzer disc out there in my opinion, it will hold that line forever and it loves to tombstone on a spike hyzer if you throw it that way. (I suspect this is where it gets its name)
Did you look into the corvette by any chance? Some are domey and absolute bombers and some are flatter and more over stable which are sweet for forehands. Love the series and congrats on the dope sponsorship!
Brendan's "go to" distance driver is a Firestorm... had never heard of it before - but he picked it up about 1-1 1/2 years ago... and he BOMBS with that... haven't found one since though up here in MI! He tried to take it out of the bag for a tournament, and put it right back in after... he loves it! The Wraith is my fastest distance driver - it was one of the first discs I bought when I first started playing back in the mid 2000's ... that and a Valkyrie... I feel those two (plus my Sapphire) are my most trusted drivers (right now)... LOVED THIS SERIES - it's helped me look at my bag and start to figure out the necessities of it (what REALLY needs to be in the bag - what I use - and what I "want" in the bag (as in, what the "pros" have in it)... definitely learning what I have and how I throw! Thank you Robbie!!!
I’ve had a groove for years and every other week I say I’m gonna practice it and finally figure it out. I’ll throw it a few times then say “maybe today’s not the day”.
I love both my Wraith and my Shryke. I can really crush both of them on forehands when I'm not putting too much anhyzer on them haha. Loved the series Robbie and looking forward to seeing what you're able to do going forward!
I have really enjoyed this series honestly, even though the only Innova disc I still bag is a Nova. Super interesting to see your thought process for the whole thing.
Sorry for the book here, I get carried away talking about discs 😂 The Groove is really a strange disc. When i first found mine it was just insanely understable, but would still fight out at the end. I mean, literally hyzer flip to a roller. I figured out I could do a huge S line waay up in the air, or even skip it off the dirt in front of me and have it flip up to flat for like 100 ft. Super niche stuff, so i didnt throw it much for a year or two. After that much time obviously my form has changed and so when I went to throw it the other day (after i made a comment here about niche discs), I gave it a nearly knife hyzer angle and it just flipped up to flat and went dead straight for like 300' and took a hard left, stopping at 398' (udisc distance). I threw it a few more times and it really impressed me, so itll be back in the bag for a while. Id guess I'm just getting more spin on the disc rather than torque. Meanwhile, a buddy of mine found a groove last week that is an absolute meathook. Couldnt get it to go more than 250'... I dont understand
Really liked the series!! The Wraith has always been my favorite distance driver. Don’t currently have one, but I was bagging a super beat in factory 2nd, Champ, and Halo Wraith at one time this year. My favorite Wraith is the Climo 12x Star plastic!
I bag the leopard and leopard 3. My go to for straight stable and turnover shots. All the birds are legit!!! I bag both the wraith and destroyer. I'll go with the GG wraith over a destroyer any day. The eagle is my favorite disc. I get serious distance out of it. It flys true to the numbers until they get broke in. I have a star 171 gram eagle that turns and doesn't come back. It flips up to flat and carries straight for over 400 ft. I recommend the 175 gram barsby tour series eagle. Hands down my favorite disc. I throw it as far as my wraith. It feels great in the hand. On flat it carry's true to the numbers. Max distance put a little Anny on it but not much. Great for flex shots. I toss a sidewinder. Star sidewinders break in faster than champion. I have a star sidewinder that's beat in. It turns over and on hyzer it goes straight a mile then fades right slightly when throwing backhand. I have a champion 175 max weight sidewinder that flips to flat when throwing hyzer and always finishes left. Max weight champion disc hold true to there numbers the longest! Most people use this disc for rollers I use it for these shots. The roadrunner does almost the same thing as the sidewinder but will turn over just a touch more. I crank a legit hyzer flip for 400+ so these two understable disc work perfect for me!!! They're awesome for those blind backhand turnover shots that you need to keep carrying through the line! These are my go to fairway and distance drivers right now from innova. I'm buying a turn and boss next!!!!
Congrats on the bag getting figured out! Totally stoked for you. Also I noticed you are going to the NADGT Championship. Maybe I will see you there. Would be cool to get a disc signed or something.
The Pro Destroyer is so underrated. For those who take years to beat in a star destroyer, the pro fits that flippy bomber slot nicely right out of the box, but still has the destroyer finish. I'd slot it in against the tern/firestorm slot you have. Gives that consistent in the hand feel.
Excited to see the Daedalus on that list of ones you tried it’s been my all time favorite distance driver but once it gets beat in it’s probably way too inconsistent for a pro
Yeah the Tern has some special sauce to it that I just love..It flies really fast and far but you need precise angle control to really get great use out of it and to have it be reliable. Sometimes it gets that crusher flight, and other times it turns and stays turned throughout the flight. I think wind has alot of say in how the Tern flies because it has such a slim rim. Once it shows the top plate to a head wind it keeps turning. I wanted to love that disc but my skill level at this point doesn't let me bag it to rely on it yet
I had a destroyer for 10 plus years. Could forehand it on any line. Loved its roller, and distance shota with it. Had 3 aces on it. So much ink on it. Id pay 100$ for that one back.
Firestorm is awesome. Can’t figure out the shryke just yet (but i still like it). i think if i put my halo wraith in the microwave for a bit maybe it will soften up and have a little turn on it
You gotta throw champion terns, that’s my bomber disc and they aren’t as under stable as all other plastics, the flight numbers even reflect that even tho flight numbers don’t mean much, the champ terns don’t turn into rollers even when thrown with a bit of anny
What I like about Destroyers is their inconsistency, you heard me right. If you know what to look for you can get exactly the destroyer you want, and you can get different stabilities straight from the shelf.
I don’t really have the arm for most distance drivers. Stock Star or DX wraiths work fine, but not currently in the bag. I’m pushing those out to 350-380ish, whereas I can get 400 with some 9 or 10 speeds. I did recently put the Daedalus (164, champion) in the bag as my max distance driver but it’s not something that I reach for often because I rarely need that distance off the tee for the course I play. I’d love to get my hand on a tern. I have a couple of Star Shryke, but haven’t bagged it. Just did some field work with it. I can throw an Archon (speed 11, flies like a longer Valkyrie with more glide) further, but neither is in the bag. I was low key hoping you cracked the Groove code lol.
I'm the same as you. The fastest disc I keep in the bag is a blizzard Beast. faster discs just fades out quicker and doesn't get me anymore distance. Unless you are throwing 60+ mph you really don't need anything over a 10 speed unless you just want something that finishes really hard for a specific line.
Dude. I can't imagine life without my Firestorm. It's so dependable on forehand, especially on lower release points. It's slowly pushed the Boss out of my bag.
Try not to loose the goofiness, that is what i love about this channel 😂. Great video though!! And also i think the king is the destroyer 👑 and the wrath is the queen.
The groove was my first distance driver. Bought it at REI when I had the most rudimentary understanding of flight numbers. That rim had such sharp edges that it always tore up my fingers after 2-3 drives. I gave it away to some random guy at a course like 2,500 miles away from home, knowing that I'd never see that same stupid groove again. Still glad I got to experience it while they were readily available though
This is so funny. My first disc was also a groove. I still have it, and have dyed it with a gunshot to the head emoji. I hate it so much even tho its a nostalgia disc for me.
You should do a video on what to do if you find or lose a disc. Recently, I lost 3 discs during a practice round, but I also found 3 disc while looking for them. This got me thinking about proper etiquette, like should I throw them while I have them if they are discs that I've wanted to try? How long should I look for the owner before saying "Welp, I guess youre mine now"? If they offer a reward for their disc, should I accept it? There's a lot of content there that can and should be covered but no one is picking up.
Probably one of my saddest moments was losing my first champion destroyer that was very seasoned. Trying to break in some star destroyers now but it’s just not the same. That firestorm did get my interest though.
I have a Tern that I never quite figured out. I guess I'm not consistent enough with my releases. Sometimes it would flat out bomb! My longest throws ever were with that disc. Other times, it would flip over and roll. If I played more than 10x a year I would probably figure it out. As of now, I love it but I don't totally trust it.
Love my wraiths...only throw Star plastic ... The only higher speed disc I like is the shryke...which get flippier as they break in...And I can hit that sweet slight angle hyzer flip to slight turnover line that really goes for me....wraith is King to the amateur ...just saying
Hi Robbie C, i honestly was hoping for a little love for the ape as a super overstable option. Did you consider it at all? Nice series of yours. I really enjoy watching it. Thank you for those videos. Greetings
My homie Jesse is all in on the Ape, and honestly he scared me away from it! 🤣🤣 I know it’s crazy beefy, so if I lost my Calvin Destroyers I’d probably look the the Ape!
New subscriber! I've looked at a good bit of your content and, having played a total of about 2 months, I find it very helpful. Could you possibly (if you haven't already) address the finer details of throwing a long anhyzer shot and the best type of disc to do so? For shorter upshots, I am comfortable with a forehand but tee shots that require a longer, sweeping right turn are giving me problems. Thanks.
Im not the biggest or the farthest thrower where I play but one of my go to bomber discs is the Colossus they're stable when then need to be and can even be hyzerflipped for shots that need to flip up and fade late
Great video. Congrats on (almost) finishing the bag. But what's this "offseason" you talk about? I love playing with all the leaves down, so i can find my discs easier, haha.
i do bag now 3 wraiths due i got my from understable to most stable star->pro->halo. i was supriced howe fast star did seasoned it didnt took many rounds on course i do use to do it, even it does sometimes mess disc totaly once in while xD.
I'll be honest, it's Innova so you'll find a Tern or a Firestorm with the perfect stability. Got myself a Tern because I needed something understable but got myself a used Destroyer level of stability. Ffs. I even tried a BEAT UP STARLITE Tern that was supposed to be a roller. Nope. Not quite as stable but just refuses to flip unless thrown with absolutely full power.
I have a F2 clear champion Thunderbird and it's just stupid how far it goes for a 9 speed. I can throw my Wraith just a bit further. It really is a cheat code disc.
I feel like you have too much stability there. And nothing for when you’re at the end of that second round to mash when you’re beat. Thunderbird is tight but my feeling is it is a straight to hyzer flier with very little turn. Telling you throw that beast some more I bag a pro one. But regardless just a little hyzer on release and it flips flat goes straight DRIFTS right a tad late and finishes FOWARD instead of left. Plus it’s amazing for standstill forehand. I know everyone is different but if you don’t believe me go ask Barry Schultz.
Do you consider putting like a Utility disc in for just rollers? And one that will skip when need to get around the corner low or even a grenade like to see a video on this for your bag
I'm curious what you'd think about the Mamba. The numbers are weird, but it seems to fly really straight (probably because I throw some sick 200' max distance shots)
It's incredibly friendly for newer players or people who want to turn a disc over hard. I found one unmarked, and it's fun for very specific shots when I don't want to throw a big forehand downhill. I'm sure you can hyzer flip it easily as well.
