So as a prototype this is really cool, but I think for it to hold up over time and to look even better, you should consider replacing the veneer or the metal sheet with laser cut 2mm plywood, so the covers fit better and don't fray at the edges. You than also don't have to cut out the speakers. You also could use small magnets to hold the covers on. For cooling purposes you could look into water cooling and add the fans at the back of the table. And you should definitely replace the foam under the power supply with something sturdier, cause this will compress over time and no air can pass.
@pierreboyer9277
@pierreboyer9277 2 года назад
Thanks for your ideas! Yes you're completely right, steel and veneer is hardly a good solution. It's very much too complex to manufacture. Plywood is the way I'm going for my second prototype and it looks very good. Though 2mm is too thin with plywood, I used 8mm with my intermediate prototype and it's good. I think I can reduce to 5mm if I find a strong birch plywood. Small magnet may not be required because the covers hold very well. The question is more how to enable easy opening of the covers. I'm investigating push push mechanism. Such are used with magnet for kitchen furniture. That might be the thing. The thing I used is very hard, it's not really a foam, I used that word because I don't know the correct one for that. It's the thing that goes under chairs to avoid screeching noises. But overall the thermals on that first desk sucks. I'm redesigning it completely and I think the next prototype will be really super cool, even while using mostly passive cooling and air cooling. I never seen a heatsink as big as the one I'm planing actually :)

While I love the idea behind this all-in-one desk, I'd be extremely concerned about thermals for longer use sessions. It would have been well worth it to make it a little thicker in order to fit an AIO or water loop in my opinion.

LINUS needs to do v3 of the project with him.
@winnetouch
@winnetouch 3 года назад
I wouldn't really agree. While some of these fancy feature and ideas seem nice at first glance they are not very practical in the long run. The power sockets for example. He states you can plug in extra monitors and peripherals. Nice but where is the cable going to be routed to the peripheral? You need to leave the cover open and that negates the entire point of it being covered or hidden in the first place. Most of the panels are made to size. That means that upgrading the scanner, printer or anything else other then the computer would be a pain. Also I'm not really a fan of all the bumps, ridges and holes that the panels create. Imagine writing anything on it, specially with the second monitor right in front of you. I know that's not the point of the desk but it is a desk after all and most of us need to write something sooner or later. I don't want to bash on his project. I like it, if not for anything else because of the high amount of effort that went in to it. I respect people like that. I'm just trying to make a point.
@OnlyStRikER
@OnlyStRikER 3 года назад
@@winnetouch bro you got to count that LTT has a lot of budget plus a lot of man power, tools and skills. It's a personal point of view but I feel the whole point of making a pc cum desk is for minimalism or reducing crap from your table. you definitely want your desk to be looking(slim) as a regular desk so rest features are optional. Plus adding functionality is of way more value than showcasing your components. .. BTW I love LTT but still transparent here.
@pierreboyer9277
@pierreboyer9277 3 года назад
@@winnetouch Regarding the power sockets, there are actually holes that let you root the wires to the main cable hole (which is underneath the external monitor for it's HDMI and power.) And to write you can write on top of the integrated screen, which is where a paper would naturally rest when sitting at the desk.

Many of us have a work PC and a home pc integrating the home PC into the desk it's self is a great ID I think a kick started version should have a way to dock a macbook or similar laptop so only one power cable and one monitor would be required!

Matt must be proud of the upgrades of his 'invisible PC'. Sure DIY Perks motivated everyone who see his channel to create something. But me still done nothing, haha. That's a good one dude, upgrade your cable management and the air flows must be great. I subscribe your channel to see them upgrade.

Great job! You could easily cover the speakers with cloth to improve the aesthetics.

I love this so much, but I do worry about how future-proof it is. What happens when one of the components that uses a perfectly tailor-made space doesn't work anymore? There'd be nothing worse than purchasing an incredible, likely very expensive desk, then having it become worthless down the road because it cannot be changed without cutting things apart and rebuilding. Is there any chance you might design a more modular kit version to sell? I could see there being two models, one the over the top perfect one as seen in this video, and another with just enough compromise to be futureproof, customizable, and maybe just a tad more affordable. I'm also interested in whether you could think of a way to make it somewhat secure against spills. My roommate's sick cat peed on my desk last week, so "just don't eat/drink at the desk" isn't quite enough for my disastrous life.

Regarding the future proofability, for the computer components : motherboard, gpu, PSU, it won't be a problem because they have relatively standard size. For the scanner and the printer it might be a question. Though for the scanner, I increased slightly the size of the scanner box in latest prototype such that it will be more accomodating. For the printer the box is a bit bigger too, so other thermal printers will fit too. And the idea is that it can be used as storage even if it fails. For the screen it will be an option, and the wood cover will be provided in all cases, such that if the screen is broken you can still replace it with the original wood panel. Also I plan to keep replacement parts available on my shop, as I'm doing for my game console for instance (see www.8bcraft.com). So even if the screen breaks you'll be able to replace it.

I can see this project has ran for a months. Very hard work to make your prototype. Good luck with the kickstarter and hope you can manage to some improvements or different versions.

Thanks ! Second prototype will be ready in a few weeks, I'm waiting for a few missing components. And it's looking really good !
