The joinery is all done with 3/8 inch dowels using the Jessem 3/8ths dowling jig. The jig makes it very easy to align the holes and create small offsets between the legs and the rails. This project took a long time but the end result I'm very happy with. Like all my project...they aren't perfect because I'm still learning...but they should last many years and be able to be passed down to future generations. Let me know what you think in the comments. Hey man, I found a trick for screw length. Since plywood varies so much. Take a scrap from the piece you are currently using and run in as many screws as you need. Then hop over to your belt or disc sander and sand them all until you start sanding wood then they are all short enough to not punch through your work piece. Quicker than doing each one on the angle grinder.

Hi Dan, Nice project. I think I recognized the walnut. Good to see it being used well.

I confess, i was expecting to see more of the doweling jig, as per the title. I am debating on purchasing the jessem dowel jig. Are you happy with your purchase so far?
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 2 года назад
Thanks for the question. I am 100% satisfied thus far. I bought the jig for this project so it was my first time using it. Between the two night stands are 32 joints, each with 2 dowels, and everything went together perfectly. I had no alignment issues at all. I almost bought a cheaper jig but looking back I am so glad I spent the extra on this one. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching. 👍🏻

Hey Dan, Got a question I hope you can answer for me. I recently picked up that JessEm doweling jig and have been pretty impressed with it. My question is this. How are you aligning the dowel holes in the middle of the piece? The holes on the end, it looks like you use the edge of the jig to get your alignment but the ones in the middle have me stumped. The center alignment mark is on the bottom of the clamping plate, but I can't figure out how to use it if the piece I'm drilling is thinner than the clamping plate. The center line will hang out in space and that looks to be the case here. There really aren't many videos of people using this specific jig so any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Ben. For this project I cut myself a spacer block to set the location of the jig. I aligned the spacer with the bottom of the leg and then butted the jig against the spacer and then clamped it down to drill. What would have been faster still would be for the spacer to have a block to hit the bottom of the leg rather than me aligning by feeling for an edge...but I didn’t think of that until after the fact. I agree that center line on the jig is not entirely helpful...maybe there are uses where it is but in my case it was not. But I do like the jig...made things pretty easy. Thanks for checking out my video!

Hey Dan, Love your night stands! Very well done. How did you come up with the design? Very nice!

Beautiful project ! One stupid question though: why do you use screws instead of dowels for the table top ? Easier "squaring" ?
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 2 года назад
Thanks! The top has to be able to “float” a bit for when the boards expand/contract with seasonal moisture changes. The fasteners used allow for this. If I glued the top down with dowels the wood movement in the top could break the joinery in the base. Thanks for the question and compliment. 👍🏻

Don’t guess you would have a set of plans you would like to sell do you? Great job!
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 3 года назад
I don’t have plans available. I more or less make decisions as I go on projects so I don’t do much for plans in advance...just start with some basic measurement and go from there. Probably not the best way to do it since I usually mess something up...lol. I appreciate the compliment. Thanks for watching! 👍🏻

Nice work! I have the same doweling jig. What was the brown bottle of glue that you used?
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 11 месяцев назад
Thanks! I used Titebond Hide Glue. There is an amazon link in the video description if you want to check it out. It has about a 30 minute open time so it’s a bit easier to get all the joinery together and clamped up before it sets too much. Thanks for watching! 👍🏻

Do you live near a racetrack?
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 3 года назад
Ha...I get that question a lot about the car sounds. We live near a busy street and right at the corner so it’s a combination of cars passing or turning out onto the road. Many feel in necessary to take the opportunity to mash the gas as hard as possible. Combined with speeding up the video playback and it sounds like race cars or motocross...lol.

But how do you edge reference with for the dowel alignment so that the holes on both piece are an exact match?
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 2 года назад
I referenced off the outside edge of the jig for the top and used a spacer block to reference to the bottom of the leg for the lower joints. Same for the holes in the rails…always reference off the same edge for all pieces. I marked them all so I always put the same edge on the edge of the jig. Hope that helps.
@bighands69
@bighands69 2 года назад
@@DanPrudlow Dowels require perfect alignment. Especially when making fine furniture. The outside edge would never allow you to have that level of accuracy. It is the reason why dowels are rarely used in furniture making.
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 2 года назад
Well when I assembled these nightstands everything aligned perfectly and everything was square so the method worked…so I’ll disagree with your statement. How would you align them?
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 2 года назад
To add to that I would say in fine furniture any joinery requires precision so dowels, loose tenons, mortise & tenon…they all have to be precise.

Those cabinets look really nice, very impressive. I like your machining but I cringe watching your hands close to the saw blade. I've seen quite a few accidents, all those operators were very experienced but complacement as well. Enjoyed the build sub'd. Tony
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 2 года назад
Thanks for the compliments. I know things look closer on camera…especially at higher speed…but I do stay very focused on what I’m doing and keeping control of the workpiece. Thanks for the sub too! 👍🏻
@FrancisoDoncona
@FrancisoDoncona 2 года назад
Yes you have that “special “ table saw but my god why do you put your hands so close to the blade? You use a push still safely away from the blade but your more valuable fingers less than two inches from the blade. Are you aware of what your doing? Have you considered an overhead blade guard? I am sure “special “ tablesaw company sells one. It was cringy to watch the first few seconds, just wanted to see the jig work but moving on.
@DanPrudlow
@DanPrudlow 2 года назад
Thanks for your concern. My primary concern is keeping control of the workpiece. If I only use the push stick and the off cut contacts the blade because I was not in control of it then it becomes a missile. So while a couple inches is close, the blade is not going to move over and hit my finger. Losing control of the workpiece is what would cause things to go bad. I have the overhead blade guard but when using it I feel less in control of the workpiece as it passes through the cut. Lastly I’ll say that the video at high speed typically makes things look more “cringy” than it really is.

Had to laugh. I thought the same. Scares me I've seen too much. Tony
