Beware of the Bogeyman is a documentary film about the building of Calico Jack ,30m traditional Phinisi dive Liveaboard built by the master Konjo ship builders of South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
From California, USA here, this was amazing to watch and see the process of wooden boat building. And see how much work goes into it. Indonesia, you guys have my full respect.
We, Indonesians, called the ship as Phinisi (phi-nee-see), not peninsula. Bugis people (boogeyman?) had reach so many places around Nusantara, even had made their own "kampung", such as in Singapura there's an area called Kampoong Bugis. But, Bulukumba is not the only places that produce wooden-ship in Indonesia. There are some other places also create big hand-made ships, such as Pati (East Java), Pekalongan (Central Java), Jakarta, Bagan Siapi-api (Riau Islands), etc... The ships length can reach 30 meter long.
Bogeyman - Etymology: Is derived from the Middle English bogge/bugge (also the origin of the word bug), it means "a frightening spectre." Might the "Bagus" men of Indonesia have been privateers raiding the ships of foreign conquerers? "Bagus" meaning good in Indonesian. Defenders of Indonesia to Indonesians, pirates to foreign trading and war ships.
This is so much more than a beautiful ship, it's a majestic floating work of art, expertly built by amazingly skilled craftsmen. . . A joy to behold. . . Blessings. . .
I love hand crafted things. I was a machinist for a very long time and it was so neat to see a rusty scaly piece of metal put into the machine and come out nice and shiny and clean and being able to be used for hundreds of thousands of uses that machinist made parts are used for. Old hand skills like this are dying art form once the Craftsman that has the knowledge dies the craft dies with it. Not one ruler are measuring device was put on that whole craft to come up with such a wonderful and beautiful ship. It is utterly amazing at the at the resilience and ingenuity of these people that build these wonderful ships. Save these wonderful crafts for the future generation.
This is not about islam, this is şirk, if you want to something good from Allah just tell to Allah. No need to put gold under the wood, or no need to fire to cut wood. Just tell Allah, please make this ship to good everyone.
The hull planks first leading to asymmetrical issues is interesting. Video claims they found shipwreck that washed up and they thought it was magic from the gods and reverse engineered it. That’s probably why they build it hull first. This is sooooo similar to how China reverse engineers other countries tech and had tolerance issues and can’t quit get it as precise in regard to the manufacturing process. Does it work? Yes, is it precise and optimized? No. Great video. Thanks for posting.
When the earth wipes us away and everything starts again in a few tens of thousands of years, The Forrest’s and the seas will be fully stocked and sailing ships will reign supreme again! (If we’re there by the way it will be a terrible time to live 😂)
Such an interesting video. I'm really glad it was uploaded. I wonder with that construction technique, though, what happens when you need to replace a board due to damage of some kind?
MANTAP!!! Fantastic doco, the boat builders, filming, editing and the well researched informative narration. My documentation of building a traditional wooden Balinese Jukung pales into insignificance with the sheer scale of this project. Cheers from Bali.
Gas motors in these old curures ship motors that leak old and then oil gets in wood and fire happens. Also no gps trackers in these so other boats run into them at night and also the carry illegal cargo I heard. Idk tho.
Wow sails cool. It's not a cargo wood ship in the Mediterranean sea that I've seen and heard they run with out gps trackers or lights so sail baits hit them cause of them not coming up on radar. These were way cool boats good job
