I live in Upper Puna for 20 years . Took 3 days & 3 drunks to build my 10x20 cabin lol. Totally off grid alone with my loving dogs. Impressive build time. Aloha mates

I live nearby in Puna. That lava gets hot from the sun. The rain was probably a blessing. amazing build in 6 hrs.

The Cabin looks so cool! We are actually looking at staying at a hostel in this area when we visit Hawaii for the first time in June with our kids! (We from Australia) such an interesting area the lava!

You are right, but I wouldn’t fully enclose it. I’m building out a covered porch and will leave that side open. Also keeping the gap in the roof open. When the wood shrinks the floor will have ventilation as well

As asian and someone whose family build and live in bamboo house before, you need dried long grass or dried wheat grass covering the wall. This would help the wind and water by repeling it by a certain amount due to how dried the grass are, it cant absorb the water not unless it get soak in underwater for hours. These grass had a nature repel to water.

Me and my kids were the second family to build and live out in kalapana gardens. There was one other family living out there. We moved in in 2006. There were only five other cabins! That place is a base DUMP now! It breaks my heart! It had so much potential! I hope you rip that piece of garbage down after you get your paycheck for the video.

What if you put some stuff in between the cracks? I’ve seen them do it in cabins with moss and mud, and beavers do it to keep the water out in their dams with mud.

Aloha solid and fast build of your cabin but the cave you showed and spoke about was not use for living or defending in times of battle. Many of those caves were just ancient lava tubes and whoever stack those rocks to maintain its form is not Hawaiian. But thanks for sharing of our beautiful island malama pono a ke akua pū!
