The fourth installation of five, welcome to Building on a Budget in Mexico at The Blue Sky Sanctuary! If you're interested in moving to Mexico and perhaps building your own budget friendly home, this video might inspire you. In this chapter we take the house from completely unfinished grey cinder blocks & cement to a fairly liveable home.
@Blue Sky Sanctuary I've been sharing all that I've learned through my personal experience living in Mexico. I've bought property here, and have now completed construction of a 600sq foot house that I'm presently living in.
This isn't a 'How To' video, but it WILL give you a first hand look at what is involved with building. I do my best to share the ups and downs ins and outs, and a bit of a step by step overview of the process.
If you have any questions please put them in the comments, and as always, thank you for tuning in!

Your house turned into a beautiful home. It was really smart to paint the floors. I had the experience of rebuilding a gutted home. Because of budget issues, I could not afford the flooring for 2000 feet that I wanted. So, because I refused to live on raw concrete for 8 months while saving for floor tile, we painted. It was beautiful and easy to clean. The big bonus was stopping the concrete dust. The dust will occur no matter what unless the concrete is sealed heavy-duty, covered, or painted. My contractor taught me to add 10 percent to my grand total for rebuilding costs, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry, and then do it again for all finish work like cabinets, counters, fixtures, flooring, and furniture. That would be my true cost. He was totally on point and has been true through multiple rebuilds and new builds ever since. Cheers to your new project!

No, not in Mexico. My renovation experience has all been in the USA. I am sure it holds true in Mexico to add 10 percent to the building/finishing budgets to have a true perspective of what it will really cost. I do see Mexico in my future. I have been scouting rural acreage with reno houses. I am almost there.

Your experience is why i would never build in Mexico. Not worth the hassle, IMHO. I have a friend whose build has been delayed more than a year coupled with rising prices. Builders tell you one thing and before you know it, the price has doubled. Plus, the work is often shoddy. More power to you!

Thanks Mick, and I can easily understand why you feel that way, building in Mexico isn't for everyone! At times it's been a hassle for sure, but now I have a house & property that's fully paid for, which gives me more freedom which brings me a lot of happiness. That's what's made the whole process worth it for me. I couldn't afford to do this in Canada that's for sure. (and even if I could, I'd probably still choose Mexico 😉)

He interpret that as 'what I'm paying you now is my final week.' and so they took Christmas Vacation early lol. Things getting lost in translation here I think is a convenient excuse for people do to what they want at times, and bottom line I think the crew wanted to be done for the holiday season, so off they went! 😆 Mexico has definitely taught me to go with the flow, that's for sure!

5: 38......there is no reason to not have hot water..ever.....especially in Todos Santos. In a country where black poly pipe is EVERYWHERE, there is no reason for it. A 100' roll of 1" poly pipe holds 4 gallons of water. That roll, laid on the roof or out in the yard, will heat to well over 100f in a couple of hours. Use it directly to your shower, or accumulate it in a 50 gallon plastic barrel. Add a 12 volt pump, cost of 60- 80 dollars, run it off a car battery, and you have pressured hot water for shower and dishes. I installed a SMALL polyethylene solar water heater panel in Todos Santos for a guy, it fed an old water heater for storage. Finished at 10 AM, by noon is was steaming hot. This is at The Bentley B&B. (This was a personal favor, I was NOT employed or working, let's be clear) I did this in Idaho, with 100 ' of 1/2" poly pipe. Total cost was WAY under 100 bucks. Took 1 day to accumulate 50 gallons of 104 degree water. Ever wonder why there are millions of homes in Mexico with black water tanks on the roof??? Next time you're in La Paz, take a closer look.
@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja
@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja 11 месяцев назад
I agree with you to some extent, because we made the EXACT solar water heater you described on the roof of my last house. I talk about it in one of my other videos. The drawback was that after sunset here in the winter the water goes cold within a half hour, meaning after 6pm, no hot water. Also, I don't need to go to La Paz to see tinacos, they're on all of our houses in TS as well, including mine. We have them to store water because the city water goes on & off every day. If YOU take a closer look in La Paz you'll see a lot of people actually have beige tinacos to counter the heat. My next water heater will be a propane powered on demand unit. They're less than $200US & provide you unlimited hot water.

I don't know what part of Mexico you built your house on but each house is built differently... Building a house in Mexico shouldnt cost you more than house here in the USA i know of houses that are built just under $20,000 $15,000 and even $10,000 -- of course land is separate.. i have a property in Tijuana 35 ft across by 65 ft and will build a house.
@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja
@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja 2 года назад
Thanks for weighing in & sharing your experience, but I can't wrap my head around your numbers. Are you not paying for labor? Even if I take your highest number $20 000, and pay out 2 workers at $20/hour each, (which is way less than the average builder gets up north) that's $400/day, and in 50 days that's your entire budget gone, and you haven't paid for any materials. My $40 000 paid for labor, materials AND furnishing the home, incl windows doors appliances ect, that's how it came to be $40k.
@Ichigo_Tensa
@Ichigo_Tensa 2 года назад
@@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja i understand where you are coming from but one thing is that first you overpaid for your furniture...i can't calculate that it would cost you 15,000 for furniture it should've costed you no more than 5k-7k or in my opinion even less.. and for labor you over paid... Remember you are in Mexico and not in the USA... I know good workers need to be paid more but your paying them as if where in USA. I have family that work in Mexico and only earn a fraction of what you paid them... $7 a day and thus who work in building houses.. Mexican construction workers average pay is 71 peso per hour or 568 pesos a day.. but obviously since it's building a house and to give encouragement to the workers you need to pay a bit more. -- and not the $20 and hour. @@Ichigo_Tensa I think without watching all my videos you're not quite catching the whole picture here. It wasn't just furniture that cost $15, like I said it was windows, doors, 3 appliances, and I'll add to that, toilet, sinks, beds & bed frames, and an AC unit. And I didn't pay $20/hour, I was referring to your $20k house in the US, and trying to understand how you could do that, when I assume the minimum you'd pay up there would be $20/hour for labor. Here I'm not interested in having people work for me for $7/day. Ethically, for me, it's not gonna happen. I paid the workers an average of 4500 pesos per week, roughly $225/week, and I have no regrets.

@@Ichigo_Tensa please, with all due respect, read my reply thoroughly before replying, or I'm really just repeating myself & we're miscommunicating & wasting time. thank you.

@@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja i know what you are saying but people do spend 10k..15k and 20k + on houses..my dad did his 2 story house in Colima Mexico close to Manzanillo with a single car garage for 22,000 dollars... Anyone can build a home it all depends on your budget.. if a person wants to invest alot of money on furniture or whatever then its up to that person... But regardless I'm super happy for your accomplishment 🙂

Fair of you to ask but I'd rather not say. Despite all that I share publically there are some things I'd like to keep private, sorry. 😎

What's a good per hour rate for a stone or brick mason near you? I'm budgeting @200-250 pesos/hr with current inflation but have no firm quote.

Hey! Don't know how your question fell between the cracks but yes you're on the right track with your estimate. I pay in the ballpark of 1000 pesos/day.
