Building ORCA - Episode 11: Completing the Centerline

This week we're getting out and installing our Horn Timber, the last piece on ORCA's centerline. We first need to cut the timber down to size with a chainsaw so we can get it up on to our shipsaw. The horn timber will run from the top of the stern post all the way to the transom of the boat. We then need to create another mortise and tenon to connect the two pieces, only this time the tenon in the stern post is going to go all the way through our horn timber. Once we chop that hole with our chainsaw we can connect both pieces and we'll have the entire centerline of ORCA together. The next step is making the transom and then rabbiting the entire keel.

ME TOO.. I hope Louis os OK....My father RIP was a huge boat enthusiast, had his own Marine Surveyor company, did sea trials, purchase surveys, did a lot of work for insurance companies when their insured suffered a loss.. Did consulting work for some of the old big name builders ..Silverton.. Viking .. He was the Archdiocesean of Phladelphia's insurance investigator .. property loss adjuster but his love was boats like my grandfather, his dad.. taught various courses for US Coast Guard, etc.. We owned a 30ft Owens always spent time working with my Dad on that boat.. so I came upon this ORCA build w/Louis and just found it so enjoyable to watch.. I binge watched every ORCA build .. then Nothing .. So I hope all is OK... and just can't wait for episode 12 !!!!!

Lou, have you thought about putting all this instructions on DVD and sell??? You have a lot to share, especially combing log yards. If you'd write a book it'd give plenty too. But a Lafitte Skiff, a bateau like a John boat, a pirogue would be good boats to build, from South Louisiana. Nichols University in Houma or Thibodeaux has more on Traditional boats of Louisiana. A 16" Lafitte Skiff is very good. A bateau and pirogue are boats average boats for regular people.
