Someone asked why Chris did not put in a gantry hoist when he built the workshop, and he replied that he did not intend doing the sort of work that would require one. That makes me think the workshop probably won't be quite so interesting as the likes of Tim (Cotontop3), Jeff (Jpaydirt), or dare I say it, Andrew Camerata's shops. Chris just might be missing a trick though. I rather think that Tim has received significant (in dollar terms) equipment from Milwaukee and Husqvarna, and even attachments for his mini like the big claw we say a couple of weeks ago. Jpaydirt has somehow managed to put it out there that he enjoys getting parcels from his subscribers, and gets a lot of nice stuff that way. Not quite the same as Contontop3's thousand dollar 1" drive cordless impact wrench though.

Youd think Volvo would send him some stuff, given that they featured him in one of their videos, and he sings their praises constantly. Would be a good excuse for him to get rid of his non-volvo stuff if he gets given the volvo equivalents. I think chris is just happy to have stuff that works, and likes to earn his way up. They're all pretty frugal, given the state of maypop (the tire on his volvo dumper), but it seems to pay off.

@@allanadam4553 I know it, it just seems like slabs are a whole lot more popular these days than ever. I wouldn't have a house that wasn't built on concrete footings with a crawl space underneath. @Rickimusic
@Rickimusic 4 года назад
Not usually. As Chris mentioned, the water table is high. From Greensboro to Nags head, it can get so high, first floor toilets on slab flush very slowly. Then we go through droughts where it is dusty down 3 to 5 feet and then, back to monsoons. Add to it when a hurricane moves in and one would need a rather complicated and huge sump pump setup in said basement. Forget waterproofing the basement walls, your house would float out of the ground. Right now, 1/07/2002, my well is three foot to water and our pool is over flowing. The red clay is really tight when wet. Out on the islands, it is just as bad, even with all that sand. Out there we built on driven pilings.
@shitloveaduck
@shitloveaduck 4 года назад
I get what you are saying! Where I live here in Southern Alberta, Canada, we almost always do basements. If we can build on enough slope, we do walkout basements where the front looks like a bungalow and the back like a 2 story. We actually count on the extra square footage in the basement. I see homes there that are 1400 square feet in areas of the USA on home shows, and they are so small because there is no basement. Here it is still listed as a 1400 square foot house, but you have another 1400 square feet in the basement. We also have over 4 ft of frost in many of our winters, so our footings go down 6 - 8 ft anyways on all the perimeter walls and any load bearing points in between so it almost doesn’t make sense to NOT build the basement. You dig half of it anyway! Haha. I would be willing to trade that now and be in the Carolinas instead right now! We have snow and temperatures to 10 - 15 below Fahrenheit plus winds up to 25 mph in the forecast for the next 2 weeks!! Ugh. Stay safe out there, Eh!
@shitloveaduck
@shitloveaduck 4 года назад
Pennsylvania Mike - hahaha! I like what you say. I can’t imagine a well so deep as you say!! We complain here when they go deeper than 120 ft! Haha. I was in Texas and Arizona and they didn’t have basements there as well. Apparently it is so rocky it’s not worth dealing with it. Cheaper to build a 2 storey home on slab. I guess that’s the benefit of NO frost! You live in an area that gets sooo much snow! I don’t complain (as much haha) when I see the weather you get out there! There are just huge storms that sweep through your area! Beautiful country when it’s not winter mind you! Stay warm! If I hear from Chris about putting us up for a month or so, I’ll let ya know! Haha
@Rickimusic
@Rickimusic 4 года назад
@Pennsylvania Mike It is the 4' frost code that more or less lets a basement make sense to begin with. Bottom of footers at 5', may as well dig 4' more and have a full basement. Deeper on a hill and an outside entry way. A lot of step footers are used in PA. In some PA areas, Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg, in the ESU area, are two, sump pumps are a need. I am originally from PA. Allentown area.
@lwilton
@lwilton 4 года назад
@@Rickimusic In Southern California virtually all houses less than 100 years old (which means virtually all houses) are built on slabs. I've even heard stories of contractors telling people that basements are illegal, just to get out of having to construct a house on something other than a slab. The average water table is around 250 feet these days in most places. But that doesn't matter much, since in virtually all incorporated areas local ordinances make private wells illegal, because the City has a monopoly on supplying water to you.
