EnviroHouse How To: Build a Rain Barrel
Step 1: Purchase supplies - barrel, fittings, screening.
Step 2: Use your 1.5” hole saw and drill to make holes in the cap of your barrel and one hole in the bottom for your spigot.
Step 3: Drill your overflow hole.
Step 4: Clean the barrel.
Step 5: Insert your overflow assembly.
Step 6: Insert your spigot.
Step 7: Add mesh screening to cover the holes in the cap to keep out debris.
Step 8: Polish with olive oil to add a nice finished look to your barrel.

A tip to all for the overflow... 1.5 inch pvc sch. 40 pipe and elbows from local hardware stores. Get a Hayward pool inlet (Part#SP1023G) to go through the barrel. You will need a 2 1/4 in dia. hole saw. Hope this helps.

Hello, loved your video, and I agree a materials list would be awesome! Specifically the sizes of the bulkheads, spigot and overflow parts. Anything you can recall would be super helpful. Thanks again for a great tutorial!

Our pipes broke during the freeze so we had to shut off the city water we boil the rain water to drink these barrels work well to wash dishes and laundry too and to take a bath outside in a stock tank.

Excellent video! Can you please provide a material's list? I found the barrel and just need the other materials. Any list of parts, sizes, etc. would be extremely helpful for this gal! Thank you so much! Well done!

Thank you for this high quality video! Could you add a materials list to the description? Also, where can we buy the screw top barrels?

I really appreciate your tips particularly your overflow design. Because my barrel has few flat spots and is mostly is mostly shaped by a radius, I was concerned that choosing a low overflow hole would ruin it's capacity. Not any longer! The way you used a pipe to the top on the inside solves that problem. Thank you very much.

Very glad it helped. You can really put the overflow anywhere you like on a barrel, with this system, as long as you have a straight run for the pipe to the top of the barrel. I dont use any glue with this at all and another cool thing i like about this design is that you can bend the overflow pipe down if you need to to accomodate a larger roof area, if that makes sense?!🙂 gives the water more time to overflow out of the system so it wont overflow over the top of the barrel

@@danborba7028 Hey Dan, wouldn't "bending the pipe down" be equivalent to simply removing that pvc pipe inside? I've got mine built and going to install this weekend but I am worried the 3/4" hose won't drain enough water fast enough for my downspout. Roof is probably 400 sq ft.
@danborba7028
@danborba7028 2 года назад
@@jeffbauman5447 hey Jeff, you could just completely remove the pipe and when I make them they're around 10" long or you can bend it to your liking, i.e. an inch, 2", 5" or whatever. The more you bend it the less capacity. 400 Sq ft is a pretty big catchment area but by bending down the pipe to start with you can see how well it overflows at that height and then remove the pipe if that fails. Does that make sense?

@@danborba7028 Thanks Dan, yeah absolutely makes sense...I was confused by the word "bending", but I get it now, you're saying just change the angle so the top is lower...Makes total sense...I'll give it a go...Tested it the last few days and seems to be leak free! Great video and thank you for your help.

@@jeffbauman5447 excellent. Glad it makes sense, it's a better option than pulling out the pipe and just cutting it. Many years of happy harvesting!

Great vid! Are you able to explain what parts you used to make the overflow? I don’t know how to look for them at the hardware store 😭

Hello Mr. Borba, any suggestions or parts list you can provide with the red rain barrel? I found some of the red ones at a local supply store that are cheap compared to the internet. Thanks.

Great video and so easy to understand. I'm making this with some students. Would you mind to put a materials list up so I can buy the right sized parts? Many thanks.

I thought you weren't suppose to use metal spigots on rubber barrels.... you should use rubber on rubber so they don't eventually leak.
@danborba7028

Thank you, I hadn't heard that before. I've been selling metal ones since 1999 with arrowhead spigots til 2013 then Legend Ball valve spigots since then. I do get a reported leak from the Legend occasionally
