After assembling the tank model and finishing the figures in the previous parts we can now continue with painting and weathering the Schneider tank. How this can be done in an not overly complex way is demonstrated in this video.

I agree, I think we are too reliant on commercial products. We can make washes and dirt/mud easily and economically. Still, some great commercial products out there too, fast and easy to use but certainly more expensive. Your model, your choice. Great video!

That was awesome! Super chill with the music too, I liked that a lot :) and I'm also glad you found the satin varnish to work well. I often find it gets matte after all the oil fading and washes too, which is very convenient. I have some questions about your order of techniques: So you did the pinwash and stuff, and then mentioned how you did not plan on doing chipping. When you do chipping, is it always after the wash? I always do it before the wash as I find the wash can help blend in the reddish primer colours and tone down the chipping. And I can also focus heavier areas of wash around areas with more chipping to make them look more dirty and used. So I'm curious as to what your reasons are for doing chipping after the wash. I don't mean to challenge your reasons, I'm just curious as I'm always looking for new ideas and you have more experience than I do! And another question about the order of effects. You do dust, then mud, then wet effects. I do mud, then dust, then wetness. Again, any specific reason why dust before mud? I find I have better control when I do mud first, and then blend it in and make dusty and dry effects almost spreading from the muddy areas. I can also get more texture in simulating dry mud by putting the dusty pigments over areas of thick mud that was texture. But I haven't really tried it your way, so again I'm curious if there are benefits I haven't thought of.
@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling
@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling 5 лет назад
Cheers mate! That chill music is borrowed from Shane by the way :) Thats pretty easy to answer all in all: I start with the wash first indeed, then do the chipping. The chipping effects the way i do them are very subtle and not too striking, so if i would put a wash over them they would become partially invisible. So i rather do them after the wash, maintaining their look. The only thing that can cover them up then is the dirt and dust. With regard to the dust, mud and wet effects, i start with the effect, which covers everything, then i continue with the effect that covers the lower half of the model, and then i use effects, which are restricted to very small portions. So basically, i go from big to mid size to small. Dust is everywhere, mud covers a lot of the lower half of the model and the wet stains are here and there on the lower half.

Hi, just had a look at the video. First thought it looked boring from the thumbnail. Well, I failed. Fantastic result, and as you said, simple technique with basic products and just a convincing finish. Same goes for your figures, that I reviewed as well. Should start to finally do my figures too. Only thing I am not sure about, did the Schneider have shiny bare metal tracks?
@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling
@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling 5 лет назад
Cheers Soeren! Give the figures a try, they make everything just better. With regard to the tracks, they did not end up too shiny in the end due to the weathering. I don´t think one would paint tracks in the factory (the color would be grinded away very quickly, seems like a waste to me), the tracks would certainly corrode over time and get dirty. Once a tank moves it does not take long to get bare metal surfaces, because the tank grinds away the rust and dirt on the tracks. That becomes very apparant when they make some old tanks move at museum shows.
@soerenfeddersen3560
@soerenfeddersen3560 5 лет назад
Hey @@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling and thank you for your response :) I have found an interesting discussion elsewhere about tracks and colors. I was a bit curious during the last year and went with the brown grey paint approach myself. Here it is refering to your particular tank to: www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235044800-friulmodel-metal-tank-tracks-for-renault-ft-17-135/
@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling
@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling 5 лет назад
I don´t trust museum vehicles a lot. They are usually never absolutely authentic and measures are taken to prevent corrosion. I bet that even a light tank like the Renault FT would wear off that paint on the tracks fairly quickly. It would be super tough paint that could act as armor itself if it could withstand that. I spent a day with a German WW2 tank in driving condition and made a video about that, the tracks get very shiny in many places. One can see that also in this lovely video made at the Saumur tank museum, where the tank drives a few hundred meters and you can see how the rust patina wears off and creates some shiny metal areas towards the end of the video. The ground is very hard so the other areas of the tracks are not affected so much. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V-XzNYsVkQM.html

Would Tamiya's Kure Gray be close to the agriculture machine color you talked about? Or German Gray? I'm doing a Takom St. Chamond.

Intersting question Carlos! I don´t know since i have never worked with Tamiya paints. At the first glance Kure grey looks a bit too grey and pale, it needs quite a hefty blue tinge. I think you can just add a bit of blue into the mix.

@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling
@HamilkarBarkasScaleModelling 5 лет назад
