Hmm ... the most credible gardening sites I could find (and there are VERY few), recommend top soil as the main component of one's garden soil. This surprises me and challenges my practice of using only compost to liberally add to my raised beds at the end of my gardening season. I am not yet fully convinced but I'm convinced enough to (reluctantly) start my own trials next season. I'm going to try using top soil as the main component of my top dressing in the fall. Thanks for posting.

I used only compost and I THOUGHT that was enough. My plants are struggling, severely. I will start fertilizing since the plants are already in the ground of compost, but yeah, I'll start with topsoil and add to it. I need about 20 cu yards of topsoil tho.
@priayief
@priayief 7 месяцев назад
@@IAmHisBeloved5 I reserved one of my 4 x 4 beds for topsoil only and grew identical varieties of peppers and tomatoes in that bed and another 4 x 4 bed with compost only. When I do these tests, I don't compare results precisely since I figure it only matters if there is a significant difference. Definitely better results in the compost bed but it wasn't dramatic. I'm guessing if I do the same thing next year, my compost bed will most likely show even more improved results.
@priayief

@@JanineMJoi In my opinion, there are so many seasonal variations that might influence your plants. Try growing identical plants in the same season, one with compost and the other with topsoil.

Dig a trench, put the soil in a wheel barrel. Add old dead rotten wood to your trench. Then add twigs, leaves and compost to the trench. Return the soil to the garden bed. Top the soil with leaves and wood chips. This process won’t cost you anything, and your soil will be as good as his. This video was a commercial for soil additives not gardening advise. Hi there, I just finished with making a raised garden bed. I am having a hard time understanding what I should put at the bottom and what to use to build it up to the top. Should I put cardboard at the bottom, then use topsoil, then compost, then remaining matter like the shredded leaves and maybe mulch at the top? Could you help me out?
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 5 лет назад
When you're starting from scratch, you can mix all the soil and compost/ organic inputs together. Then in the future just add new inputs to the top. No need to mix it in. Regarding the shredded leaf mulch, just put that over the top of your bed. Use about 2 inches. And cardboard at the base of your bed is not necessary. It doesn't hurt anything but not a step you need to do. The soil volume will prevent weeds from germinating and kill whatever is underneath it.

I live in Sanibel. We lost some trees. Norfolk island pine and cabbage palm. We ground the stumps about 3 months ago. I added some of this ground pulp to my seed starting mix along with potting soil. The seeds look great and are sprouting. What are your thoughts for me to add this to my raised beds.
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV Год назад
I think this is a great use of some of that pulb to help improve drainage and add volume to your soil mix. The main caution I would have is that the pulp will continue to breakdown over time, and as it does, it will require nitrogen for that, which it will be pulling from the soil. That nitrogen is needed by your seedlings and if it's being diverted by the pulp breaking down, it can cause your seedlings to languish, and look stunted and yellowish. However, if you are not seeing that, than keep doing what you are doing. It's working so no need to change it. Just keep an eye on this and if you see it happening, you'll know why. Good luck!

Making a raised bed, following advice and starting with a layer of organic matter (tree cuttings, grass clippings, autumn leaves). I also have a lot of moss that I raked from my lawn, can I add this too? I'm worried it could be too moisture retentive, cause drainage problems and/or take too long to break down. Any advice greatly appreciated!
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV Год назад
Hello, Jessica. As long as you keep the mixture well blended and use a diverse array of inputs, you should be fine. The issues with poor drainage arise usually when there's too much of one thing that is too moisture retentive. Moss might be that in your example, but by blending with other inputs, you crate space for air and water to move through, so I think you should be fine. Also, the longer the organic matter is in your soil, the more it will breakdown, and that is also good for drainage!

I will be planting in a raised bed that will be on my terrace. I plan on adding breathable fleece to the bottom of the bed, to allow for proper air-flow. I’ve heard that you want to add branches etc to the bottom, then compost, then soil. Does this three-layer system make more sense for what I’m doing, or should I mix all layers (like you said) and mix (in my case) high quality soil, compost and maneur/easily degradable things?

So no need for peat moss or vermiculite/perlite? Does your mix allow for drainage and looseness in the soil?
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 5 лет назад
No. In fact, peat moss can cause the soil to dry out. Once peat moss dries out, it can be very hard to get it absorbant again. I don't use perlite or vermiculite because of the diversity of the other material I'm adding. The soil particulate sizes vary so much when you have a diverse blend of organic material that you get the pore space and drainage you're seeking Dan.

Correct. I find the best purchased topsoil comes from bulk suppliers locally that make it on site (typically). Look for rich, dark, crumbly soil that binds together when you squeeze it but breaks apart when you run your fingers through it. It should also smell nice and earthy. And if it has any trash in it, like broken glass or plastic, that is NOT what you want.

Why do I get wild mushrooms growing in my herbs I grow on wine barrels and how do I kill it? Are they harmful and poison?
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 5 лет назад
No need to kill the mushrooms, Lilia, nor should you. It's not worth your time and it's counterproductive to the natural processes at work in your soil. This is just a sprouting fungus that is in your soil naturally. There are many good fungus and bacteria that are essential to breaking down the material in the soil so nutrients are available to your plants.

Check with your local landscape supplier. They often have soil blends that include locally sourced minerals such as granite dust in my part of the country.

I am a Transplant Patient and I am stuck between a rock and a hard spot, I can not have any kind of Worm Casting, Manure or anything like that because it could kill me. All people with any kind of Transplants or anybody that is Immune Suppressed has this same problem. I had my First Salad and BLT last year because I grew my own Lettuce and I can't tell you how good it tasted until the Moles got it. What can we do toy make a good mix for raised beds or just tired dirt in your Garden? Thanks!!!

Maybe try hydroponics? I’m curious as to why a transplant patient can’t use castings in the garden. First I’ve heard about this. Very interesting.

Me too. I watched a lot of vids and read a lot of blogs. So I'm going to put chicken wire on the bottom to keep the ground critters from tunneling up through the raised bed.

1. Why not add sand to help drainage, 2. Or worms to help pockets of air in the soil? 3. Az rocksalt for minerals? 4. Chicken pellets? 5. Do you mix everything or have them in layers? 6. Water with pond water / rain water / tap water , which in rank order and why?
@magicmarker7047
@magicmarker7047 2 года назад
I saw some beginner gardeners and they added sand to their soil and it turned into rock hard soil. Maybe it was the area they lived but I really wouldn't worry too much about the drainage after all topsoil was meant to hold in the water so you don't have to water as frequently.

Hey Joe, Great video and very helpful. I was hoping you could clear something up for me; when we say compost vs mulch, is the stuff at my local municipality(which is finely chipped up grass, leaves, wood) considered compost or mulch? mulch is just straight chipped up wood correct? trying to start a food garden and not sure what to add after topsoil. Have also just heard that having a compost/mulch garden is the way to go to. Thoughts?
@judyhowell7075
@judyhowell7075 5 лет назад
John Phillips I’d say your community is offering compost but it may not be 100% composted yet, I gather in my city and side dress with this and use it as compost booster. Mulch is mostly just wood chips
@ramz1455
@ramz1455 4 года назад
Mulch is to cover your soil to keep it nice and moist. Use fall leaves it has great benefits. If you're gonna use compost it has to be broken down almost completely; bacteria need nitrogen to break down the compost. adding compost that is not matured will take nitrogen from plants. My 2 cent.s

You mix the manure with the soil i believe and you lay mulch on top to prevent weeds and to lock in moisture for soil.

@@CodeCheese I know why you put mulch on top. I said he mixed mulch throughout the soil. My question is do I need to trash the entire bed now?.

Interesting, especially the observation on horse manure. Seriously?. The least treated pasture in the UK tends to be equestrian, so will have the lowest residual herbicide levels, in many cases probably the pasture is near organic farming, with very little input of fertiliser or herbicide.
@mayhemschild
@mayhemschild Год назад
Yes, really. There are several videos from DavidtheGood and others regarding a particular herbicide called Grazon, here in the states, that is contaminating compost. People are hauling into their gardens and then having to remove the contaminated soil because their crops die. JoeGardenerTV also has a video on herbicides.
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV Год назад
It may depend on your local or regional laws on what herbicides are allowed. Even some states in the US ban these persistent herbicides. Unfortunately they are still widely used and create terrible problems for gardeners who unknowingly use them from the composted horse manure. It's a real problem and very widespread here in the states.

Why is horse manure bad and cow manure good, I think they eat similar.
@joegardenerTV
@joegardenerTV 7 месяцев назад
The main thing is that horses are often fed hay. Many farmers that harvest hay spray their fields with persistent herbicides to kill the unsightly broadleaf weeds that would make their hay less valuable at harvest and sale. The herbicides can last for several years, even after the horse manure is well composted. When gardeners use this compost in their gardens, the efficacy of the persistent herbicide is still very high. Many edible crops are sensitive to this and will either die or become stunted or disfigured. It takes about 5 years to correct the twined garden soil. All of the above happened to me even though I knew better. Dumb mistake but one I will never repeat. The other part of your question is that cows are generally not being fed expensive hay that has been grown to bale for horses. While cows often graze on grass, those fields are not being groomed for harvest and therefore don’t get the expensive herbicide sprayed on the fields to kill the broadleaf weeds in the grass so they can harvest clean (weed free) hay.

This is glorious, I have been researching "is compost the same as potting soil?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Fonillian Uncomplex Future - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? It is a great exclusive product for growing up to 10 times more produce using aquaponics minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.

@watermelonlalala
@watermelonlalala 4 года назад
Seems like you are going to have fifty percent organic if the last twenty percent is leaves, mushroom compost, bark, etc. You said: Start with bulk high quality top soil, fifty percent by volume. Thirty percent high quality compost. Find a dealer, certified bulk if possible. The last twenty percent can be made of these: shredded leaves, mineralized soil blends/granite dust. Worm castings, mushroom compost. Aged ground bark, not freshly chipped. Composted cow or poultry manure. No horse manure, avoid it.
