There's a few options to do the #9 thrust as a roller . Nice build is a shame to leave that old washer there , particularly without a specific lube feed to it Manual valvebody is good to delete the governor parts and modulator , use a 9/16" freeze plug . Those front parts from the sun shell forward is best to assemble the shell . planets hub and clutch drums on the bench and fit in the case as one complete unit ;) Much easier and you know its fitted together right. Nice build up anyway will go ok :) Best to do a dummy fit up first to select the correct #1 & #2 washers prior to final assembly
Pan fill c-4 uses 26 spline input shaft vs 24 spline on the case fill, not 100% sure but I think the pan fill model also uses 1 more fiber and steel in the clutch pack as well as 11 7/16" converter bolt pattern on pan fill vs. 10.5" on case fill, the larger bolt pattern converter also uses a 164 tooth flexplate vs. 158 tooth for the 10.5" pattern converter. I've personally had better success with the pan fill model but that is me. Awesome video thanks for sharing 👍
Great video. This brings back memories. My first C4 trans was my second trans I had ever overhauled. I love a C4, often I wonder why there wasn’t a large C4 for heavy duty use. Nothing shifts as great as a C4. As for the 4r70w, another great trans with only a few mods. So far my 4r70w in the jeep is wonderful. I strongly recommend compushift for the controller. Can’t wait for part 2
My first transmission build was a C4, the only thing I did wrong was put the modulator valve in backwards and you will definitely know cause when it hits second gear it will come to a dead stop, like you put on a trans brake, hell of a feeling 😀
LoL... when you hear me mention "Blue Goo"... this is actually what I'm talking about. That stuff is GREAT, and a must for this kind of work (and more).
Broader transmission makes a roller washer to replace the one on the back of Sprague you probably knew this but anyway thank you for the video always learning had to rebuild a c4 and it was a challenge
Those that call a roller clutch a "sprag" has always annoyed me. It's mostly old timers that do this but also by those that don't really care or understand the difference. A roller clutch is a roller clutch and a sprag is a sprag. There is also a mechanical diode. They all do the same thing but calling everything a "sprag" is not correct terminology. Their construction and the way they apply the lockup are all entirely different. Kind of like saying "Do you want a Coke?" when you are actually passing out Pepsi's.
What would cause a 2 gear flair on a new rebuilt c4 never did it before the only thing different was someone put another clutch in it would that cause it.
Hey Andy, I'm not gonna roast you because I've used just high tac on some gaskets and worked just fine. I need you to clear up something for someone that's a little longer in the tooth. Back in the eighties we would have just opted for a C6, Same everything except slightly larger diameter input and output shafts. Is there any benefit that I'm looking over besides possibly a little white savings using a C4? I'm very familiar with both units and other units as well I'm just curious. You'd probably also like some of my homemade tools for lipsios
How much life you get out of a C4? Mine started as a mighty mite and then we upgraded it from there and im still 30 passes i start seeing a spike on my graph on the 2-3 shift
I've only ever done Turbo-Hydromatic transmissions so this was very interesting to see. In fact I have another 350C to do whenever the snow melts and I can get back into the shop, but I'll definitely give that assembly lube a shot. I usually use lithium grease, run a hundred kilometers on it and then change the fluid out while checking the filter for sparklies. Do you change the fluid out with this assembly lube after running the transmission in?
@Scott Kenny molybdenum anything is not a good idea for any automatic. Sprag clutches, bands, and clutch packs work on friction, reducing it through oil contamination is a very bad thing.
FMX was a Ford-specified Borg-Warner unit. Weight, parasitic loss, line pressure and Front Band (will shift from 1st to 3rd when failing) are weaknesses. Best in the business with these was Gil Younger at Trans-Go in California. R.I.P. Gil. I have a unit he did for me in 1971 when I ran N.H.R.A. Stock and Super-Stock. Same unit still going strong! The boostedboiz need some help with their C4 trans they already on number 2! They can’t seem to get one right! They keep burning them up not sure why to be honest lol
Put a C4 next to any other trans and it's obvious.... They're tiny. People use them because they are "compact" .... No one thinks the same way when it comes to differentials though. Just an observation not trying to dig on anyone.
They do have a power limit. If you're pushing 700hp, you're really at the ragged edge of a C4. (IIRC, Andy has already started saving up for a Lenco once he breaks the C4 in Casper.)
@@briankilpatrick6039 exactly but still something is wrong when just driving it burns up. They went down the track a few times with a stock diff how is that stock ass diff stronger 😂
@@Watchmedome3017 yeah, there's something _very_ wrong if they can't even make a couple passes down the track without blowing the trans... Beyond my ability to diagnose here, sadly.
